Dear lybrate-user, Earliest and positive response - you got many times when you rushed to the hospitals, "High BP is common in anxiety and ECG is fine" But it did not bring a smile in you since you are suffering from anticipatory anxiety also apart from Panic Disorder. Instead of going to many psychiatrist, if you decide to continue at least for 6 months to the same doctor without checking BP, ECG, second opinion or third opinion, you can smile and enjoy not only jokes, even life.

I'm suffering from anxiety, depression due to several job losses and also not able to concentrate on studies. I'm 52 years old and feeling very nervous of getting a job and retaining it. What should I do? I'm believing more in super natural powers like psychics, astrologer, gods and saints. How to get confidence and do my work without getting addicted any chemical injection or tablets. Is anything related to English medicine like Valium or other antidepressants which will make my mood stay clear of all mental stress without having side effects. (Generally I'm averse to English medicine).

hello there are two types of urges mentioned in Ayurveda 1) dharniya vega (urges, should b controlled, but you aren't) like chinta-stress, bhaya-fear, shoka-, krodha-short temper, maan- ego, lobha-greedy etc mental condition you should control yourself 2) adharniya vega (urges that should not be controlled, but you are controling) like sleep, urine, stool, hunger, thirst, yawn, sneeze, vomit etc. so it's too bad live with anxiety. life is a gift. my advises to you are * take life lightly * main problem is how you are reacting matters & incidence of your life & day to day * you can see half filled glass of water by two way: half is still empty(nagative attitude) or half full(positive) * take balance diet * give time for yoga * constipation should removed * you can take brahmi sankhpuspi etc ayurveda medicine * I recommended strongly, go near by ayurveda centre & take shirodhara & Nashya treatment all anti depressants have major side effects. use nature thing as much as possible try to find out reasons of discontinued job & by clearing this starts new job coz life has no failures:)

My wife has had a stroke 3 years ago. She gets mini strokes about every 3 months, during which she goes into memory loss and her speech is distorted. About 2 days ago it happened again. This time she is unable to speak at will. She normally recovers after a few days. This is frightening. I care for her very much. Her medication is aspirin and apporosuvastatin for cholesterol. Is there a better form of treatment or medication for her condition?

Yes, this is not good. What is the reason behind her getting recurrent strokes? is she having atrial fibrillation or any other arrhythmias? there are other reasons for hypercoagulable states like antiphospholipid syndrome etc. She needs proper evaluation once the cause is known, she can be definitely treated in a better manner. But, first we have to perform necessary tests to find the etiology. Consult a good physician.

There are no side effects please take that out of your mind otherwise as it is that fear will not let you survive adequately. Anxiety is curable and follow the medication prescribed by doctor it will start showing its effects slowly and slowly medicines will be tapered. If you are so fearful of side effects you ask you doctor to change it.

Tips to Deal With Social Phobia

Master Of Science In Counseling & Psychotherapy

Tips to Deal With Social Phobia

Anxiety often leads to the development of phobias. An unreasonable fear of being in social situations is known as social anxiety or social phobia. People suffering from such a phobia may be afraid of specific social settings like public speaking or generic social events such as eating with others or using public telephones. They are afraid that they will embarrass themselves or be humiliated in front of others. Being in such a situation can often build up into a panic attack. In many cases, the person himself is aware that his fear is irrational but cannot overcome it. Hence, here are a few tips to overcome social phobia.

  1. Relax: The first thing you need to do is learn to relax. People with phobias often anticipate them and stress themselves out before the situation can present itself. Being anxious heightens sensitivity and worsens your response to a social situation. Hence, before stepping out or meeting someone, take a deep breath and relax. Instead of focusing on the stressful situation, think about something in the future like getting home to a nice cup of tea.
  2. Test yourself: Make a list of the situations that you are afraid of and anticipate the level of anxiety you think it would cause. Then test this hypothesis by putting yourself in the situation. For example, if you fear walking into a crowded room, try doing it once. You may find that you cope with the situation better then you anticipated. Keep a record of these hypothesis and test results.
  3. Practice doing what scares you: Some situations may scare you too much to dive straight into them. In such cases, practice what you would do if you were in such a situation by yourself or with someone you trust. Run the situation in your head and imagine what you would do if it were actually happening.
  4. Look around: Social awkwardness is often caused by imaging that people can read your thoughts and thus focusing on them rather than the people you are talking to or the space you are in. Train your mind to notice things around you and be aware of your situation. Focusing outwards can lower your anxiety and enhance your ability to hold a conversation with people. To make this a habit, whenever you walk into a room make a mental note of three things in the room.
  5. Ask questions: An easy way to shift focus from yourself to people around you is by asking questions. When you someone a question listen to their response and if you still aren't comfortable talking about your own views, ask another related question. This will not give your mind time to dwell on any negative thoughts and can even increase your social circle.

Lybrate-user I would like to say that your lifestyle may not be proper. For body pains we would like to know that if you are lying down directly under the fan? that may cause heaviness. Another cause is high uric acid and guoty diathesis. So avoid more legumes in diet. You should also check your diet. It must healthy with less cholesterol and less sugar. Take salads and fruits and vitamin b12 and drink plenty of water. Avoid roti in any form.

Hi, From your question I am unable to understand the cause of your anxiety. Very often when we are too anxious or worry a lot then the emotional disturbances manifest as bodily symptoms such as hair loss, indigestion, gastric trouble, pains etc. Sometimes these bodily symptoms then become a cause for further worries and anxiety and this becomes a vicious cycle which feels hard to break. It would be a good idea to address the underlying causes of anxiety first. You could speak to friends or family or seek psychological counselling for the same. Other ways of improving our general sense of well being is through regular exercise such as walks, yoga, aerobics, swimming, cycling etc; pursuing some activity that you like such as dancing, listening to music, reading etc. All these help to release some chemicals such as serotonin and endorphins in our brain that make us feel good and less fatigued. Hope this helps.

I am 45 years old and have BP diabetic and have undergone angioplasty in 2011. I have been jobless last 10 years and small businesses I have tried my hand have failed miserably. I drink alcohol like crazy till I fall when I am too depressed. I am contemplating divorce as well as my wife of almost 20 years has started accusing me of nonsense. My father had committed suicide 5 years ago and my mother sold my ancestral property and vanished in thin air. What to do.

From what you describe, it appears like that even though you have a medical problem which you have barely fixed you continue to test your health in obviously dangerous ways. This is an indication that you do not comply with healthy ways and much more can be read from that. Now, whether the problems came first or your irresponsible behavior caused these health problems may be a contentious point. From this, I can garner that you may be contributing to the conflict with your wife to a large extent, after so many years of marriage, and now pushing for a divorce that may add more to your misery. With your father having committed suicide, which incidentally can run in families, you need to be very responsible about various things. My advice is that you drop the idea of divorce and sort out the differences with your wife together with the help of a marriage counselor, immediately. Then you must give up your drinking habit and if need be, admit yourself in a rehabilitation center to resolve that. You must get into a health regimen that will ensure good health and longevity. You must also look at getting some employment since the business deals failed ( I do not know how much of that was due to your attitude). Please take serious note of my suggestions even if it upsets you and take concrete action steps to reduce the stressful life you are leading right now. They have only one outcome if you continued to persist with it: total ruin and destruction that need not be named.

Lets deal with Job issue first. This is a logical though exaggerated reaction of Stress & anxiety happening due to low self esteem. You need to first set goals (what exactly do you want, what job, what salary, work hours etc.) You need to keep believing in your ability to get that Dream Job (use positive affirmations) Update your resume/CV by taking new affordable online courses, distance education Find a buddy/mentor with whom you can discuss these issues & seek an honest third person view on your current state Do daily exercise (30 min cardio works best!). It actually sharpens cognition & makes your brain work better. Lastly, if anxiety persist, seek help of Psychiatrist. All the Best.

Hi doctor my question is that I do smoke marijuana one joint in a day so will I get caught in nicotine test? Does marijuana contains nicotine? Thanks.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Guwahati
The joint that you are smoking is actually Cannabis or Marijuana which is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers (buds) , leaves, stems and seeds of Cannabis sativa—the hemp plant. Marijuana does not contain nicotine, but there are more than 400 chemicals in marijuana. The chemical that causes intoxication in users is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which creates the mind-altering effects. Marijuana is a substance of abuse, it does not have any beneficial effects on the body & harms in various ways. So would suggest that you quit smoking marijuana at the earliest.

Sir I want to ask that I feel something like memory loss problem, my HB level is 10g, is this is due to HB deficiency.

M.Sc - Applied Psychology
Psychologist, Bangalore
Hb deficiency can make you tired and lethargic due to poor supply of oxygen to the cells and this does impact your output and can lead to difficulties in concentration. Do eat iron rich, well balanced diet and iron supplements prescribed by your doctor. Once the hb comes to it's normal levels resulting in good supply of oxygen to the organs, you will feel more energetic and will be able to focus well. You have not mentioned your age. Some amount of decline happens in memory capacity with age, if you are concerned then you can consult a neurologist.

You are into an anger related depression and must get help immediately. Money should never be a consideration to stop you from getting help. There are many social work organizations who can help you find the right kind of help too. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Hi I am feeling depression from few days back and it seems I am going to loose everything. Why.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Hi I am feeling depression from few days back and it seems I am going to loose everything. Why.
You may have some incident which brought on the depression. 5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1. Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2. Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat.. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3. Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.
