Addiction -How Can Acupuncture Help In Getting Rid Of It?

Recently the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) published a journal claiming that addiction is a complex disease rather than a voluntary condition. The journal also mentioned that for decades, the approach towards recovery from addiction has been mismanaged.

Addiction is treated as a disease now. Pharmaceutical approach and therapy have been quite popular since the last few decades, but is there a better alternative to treating addiction and helping in recovery?

Alternative treatments for curing addiction have been in works since quite a while. Acupuncture is one such approach that has been found to be very effective when it comes to treating people with addiction and helping them to recover.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves stimulating different sections of the body in order to manipulate the body to harness energy and healing powers. This method includes insertion of long sterilized needles in certain parts of the body. An Acupuncture specialist carefully does it in a painless way. During an acupuncture session, the practitioner may also use other methods like Cupping and Massage.

The main ideology behind Acupuncture is balancing the QI energy that flows through human bodies. To harness and balance this energy, Acupuncture requires stimulation in different sections of the body, like the Cardiovascular system, Endocrine system, Nervous system and Immune system.

How does Acupuncture help in Addiction?

To understand Acupuncture’s role in addiction, it is first important to understand what addiction does to a human body.

Addiction causes a major damage to the Endocrine system; it disrupts the balance of the hormones that are responsible for happiness and wellbeing of a person. This disruption of balance leads the person to go haywire and drop into a pitfall of bad decisions.

Acupuncture helps in restoration of that balance in the body. Multiple studies have shown that Acupuncture helps in restoring the Endocrine system, especially the Dopamine hormone (hormone responsible for happiness).

This involves inserting sterilized needles in the specific spots in the body, which are responsible for Dopamine release. After the Dopamine levels in the body have been elevated, the person suffering from addiction deals better with the withdrawal symptoms.

Is Acupuncture Effective with Addiction?

Acupuncture is used as a treatment for Smoking Cessation. A group of smokers were gathered for a survey. This people in this group were trying different methods like medicines, Nicotine patches and e-cigarettes. The results weren’t very effective at first Then, Acupuncture became a part of this treatment. The survey found out that people who used Acupuncture along with these treatments showed better results than people who only used conventional methods.

Though acupuncture has proven to be very effective when combined with other treatments, it is important to remember that it isn’t a cure for Addiction by itself. Consulting an experienced Acupuncture practitioner who deals with addiction can help a person effectively get out of addiction.

Chalazion - Causes And Treatments!

The eyelids sometimes develop small lumps due to blockage in the oil glands and this condition is referred to as Chalazion. It can usually develop on any region of the eyelid and it is not a serious condition. In most cases, there is even no need for any treatment and the problem will resolve on its own within few days. It is also not painful unlike the other forms of eye infections and you will not face too much inconvenience due to this condition. It is observed that people suffering from stye in the past can easily develop this condition and even advanced stages of stye lead to Chalazion. You need to be careful about this as the Meibomian glands that are responsible for keeping the eyes moist will get blocked during this condition. Even though it does not cause serious complications, it can lead to problems with vision in extreme cases. This is usually due to the bigger size of the lump and it can interfere with the normal vision in few cases. You need to visit your doctor at this stage and get the suitable treatment to reduce the symptoms.

Symptoms of Chalazion
-  The most obvious symptom of this condition is the bump that can be seen on the eyelids. It can be formed on one eyelid or both depending on various factors. It is not contagious and it will not spread from the upper eyelid to the lower eyelid.

-  The size of the bump will usually be small in the early stages and it may grow it size later depending on the intensity of the problem. Remember that this is not an infection even though it can be due to other infections of the eyes.

-  It is common to notice swelling of the eyelids when you are suffering from this condition. In the same manner, the entire eye region may appear swollen when you are having a large bump on the eyelids. It will also make the eyelids tender and you can feel the lump when you tough the eyelids with your hands. However, it is not painful in most cases as this is not due to any infections.

-  The lump is also not big enough to cause any problems and only in rare conditions, it can grow big and affect the normal vision. In this situation, surgical removal of the lump will provide immediate relief and there are very less complications of this condition.

-  In some cases, the growth of the lump will be very slow and you may not notice any progress for many days. In other cases, the lump can develop quickly and even grow in size in quicktime. You will only begin to notice the problem when it results in swelling of the eyelids.

-  You may also notice that it causes some irritation to the eyes as it touches the inner layer sometimes and this results in increased production of tears from the eyes. You need to be careful when you wipe the tears and avoid touching the lump with your hands as this can cause few complications in some cases.

-  In very rare and extreme cases, you may notice symptoms for few months and this is the time you need to be worried and get medical treatment. In usual cases, it will be gone within few days without creating any complications.

-  It is also not very common to lose eyelashes in the affected area. If you notice such symptoms, you need to get in touch with an eye specialist and discuss your problems.

-  It can also cause vision blurriness in rare cases and this happens only when the size of the lump is too big to affect the normal vision. You need treatment at this stage as it can create few complications when you neglect the problem for a long duration.

Causes of Chalazion
-  One of the most important thing you need to understand about Chalazion is that it is not an infection. However, remember that it can be the result of some eye infection like stye. It is also not contagious and you will not get this from one eyelid to another in most cases.

-  The most common cause of this condition is the blocking of meibomian glands which produces oil and keeps the eyes moist. When it gets blocked, it leads to abnormal accumulation of oil in the glands and this causes the lump on the eyelids.

-  You are more likely to get this condition when you are suffering from inflammation of the eyelids called blepharitis. This condition can remain for a long duration and eventually lead to chalazion.

-  When you are not maintaining good hygiene, it will lead to clogging of the glands in the eye region and this will lead to chalazion in few cases. It is a good idea to wear protective eye gear when you are exposed to dusty environment or working in industries.

-  Some types of skin inflammation can also cause this condition. When you have skin inflammation in the facial region, it can sometimes get into the eyes and lead to this problem. However, it is not very common and not everyone with skin inflammation will get chalazion.

-  Few patients suffering from tuberculosis are likely to get this condition and this often happens due to weakening of the immune system in the body.

-  In some cases, a viral infection can lead to chalazion and this will continue to affect as long as the virus is present in the body. When you are able to control the infection, the symptoms of chalazion automatically subside on their own without any hassles.

-  In rare cases, you may be facing recurring chalazion and this should be a cause of concern. You need to take serious measures at this stage and get proper treatment as it may indicate some serious health complications in the body.

Diagnosis of Chalazion
In most cases, the physical examination of the eyelids will be more than enough to identify the condition. The only task that is important for the eye specialist is to differentiate this condition from other eye infections like stye which also affect the eyelids. However, when they pay attention to the symptoms, it becomes easy to identify this condition as this is not painful unlike other eye infections that affect the eyelids. Once this is done, they will be able to chart the best method for treatment that will give effective results in quick time.

Prevention of Chalazion
-  It is not clearly possible to prevent this condition in any manner. However, you can take certain precautions that will help you to avoid it in future.

-  Always ensure that you maintain proper hygiene and wash your hands before you rub your eyes. Remember that the bacteria and virus in the hands can infect the eyes and eventually lead to this condition in future.

-  For this reason, it is always suggested to use a piece of soft cloth to wipe your eyes instead of using your hands. However, you should make sure that the cloth is clean and it does not harm your eyes in any manner.

-  You should also be careful when you are wearing contact lenses and always buy them from reputed companies. When you are wearing hard contact lenses that last for a long time, you need to store them carefully and clean them with disinfectant before using them. For this reason, many people use soft lenses that can be disposed as this reduces the chance of getting eye infection.

-  You need to understand that having some form of skin inflammation increases the chances of developing chalazion and you should treat them carefully before they reach advanced stages. When you are suffering from such conditions, you should approach an eye specialist and take precautionary measures to avoid chalazion in future.

Chalazion Treatment
-  The first phase of treatment begins with using home remedies like warm compressions around the affected area. Remember that this condition usually subsides on its own within few days without any treatment and your doctors will wait for this phase in the initial days.

-  If the symptoms are slightly severe, you may be prescribed eye drops or even creams that will reduce the lumps and give some relief in quick time. You will be able to use them for a few days and see if they are effective in reducing the symptoms of this condition.

-  If this is not effective, you may be asked to go for surgical removal of the lump from the eyelids. Other than that, it is also possible to use injections to reduce the size of the lump in most cases. You can choose the best method suited for your condition after discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each method of treatment.

Complications of Chalazion
-  It is not common to notice severe complications out of this condition and you need not panic when you are diagnosed with Chalazion. It is usually a mild condition that does not require medical treatment in most cases. You will often notice that it resolves on its own without any complications.

-  In rare cases, the condition can lead to problems with the vision and this usually happens when the size of the chalazion is very large to affect the other regions of the eyes. However, you will also notice that when the chalazion is removed either surgically or when it resolves on its own, the vision problems also disappear and this does not cause any long term problems.

-  It does not pain in most cases but it can cause irritation in the eye region. It may often lead to teary eyes and you will have to maintain proper hygiene to avoid this condition.

Myths Related to Chalazion
Myth #1:
Chalazion is an infection:

This is not an infection like stye or other eye problems. Most people confuse this for an infection as the symptoms are often very similar and this condition also affects the eyes just like stye. However, chalazion can be the result of other eye infections and it is also noticed that having stye can lead to chalazion in future.

Myth #2: Chalazion is contagious:

This condition is not contagious at all and you will not get this from another person. You need not even worry about this condition spreading from one eyelid to another and it only affects the region where the oil glands are blocked in the eyelids.

Myth #3: Chalazion needs surgery

This is completely false as surgery is used only in rare cases to treat chalazion. Even when it comes to surgery, it is not a major one and it is just restricted to physically removing the lump from the eyelids. It gives quick results and you will notice immediate reduction in symptoms after this treatment.

Myth #4: Chalazion and Stye are same:

Even though they have similar symptoms and both conditions affect the eyelids, they are different. While stye is an infection, chalazion is not and it is caused due to infection in some cases. It is also observed that having stye for a long duration can lead to developing chalazion in future.

Once you are having symptoms of chalazion, you should ideally wait for few days to see if it begins to subside as it usually does in most cases. In this period, you can try to use some home remedies and keep the affected area clean by washing your face. If this is not giving proper results and you notice any increase in symptoms like enlarging of the lump, you should approach your doctor and get suitable treatment. Even your doctors will initially prescribe some over the counter eye drops and other creams to reduce the symptoms of chalazion. When there is no proper reduction in symptoms, they will suggest surgery and this is done in rare cases when the size of the lump is very big and it starts affecting the vision. Remember that blurring vision caused by this condition in rare cases is temporary and it will come back to normal after you get treated for this condition. In this regard, there is no need to worry about long term complications of this condition.

There are no medicine and supplement available that can decrease the risk of death.

Causes of Alzheimer
Like all sorts of dementia, Alzheimer's is induced by brain cell fatality. It is a neurodegenerative disease; this means there is intensifying brain cell fatality that occurs over time. A person with Alzheimer's, the muscle has fewer and fewer nerve skin cells and connections. Autopsies show that the nerve cells in the mind of your person with Alzheimer's have small debris, known as plaques and tangles, that build-up on the cells. The plaques are located between your dying brain skin cells, and they're created from a necessary protein known as beta-amyloidal. The tangles take place within the nerve skin cells, and they're created from other health proteins, called tau. Experts do not grasp why these changes appear. A number of different factors are thought to be involved. The Alzheimer's Connection has produced a quest of 16 slides that visualize what goes on along the way of expanding Alzheimer's disease. They provide the maximum amount of home elevators what you can still do as well as what you might have lost. These assessments can also examine if depressive disorder may be creating your symptoms.

Myths Related to Alzheimer
Alzheimer's dementia results from the intensifying reduction (degeneration) of brain skin cells. This degeneration may arrive in many ways in brain scans. However, these scans aren't enough to produce a medical diagnosis. Scans aren't used to detect the condition since there is overlap in what doctors consider a normal age-related change in the mind and unusual change.

Myth #1: Future of diagnosis
Researchers will work on new diagnostic tools which may permit doctors to analyze Alzheimer's dementia previously throughout the condition, when symptoms are incredibly minor or before symptoms even show up. One particular tool is a Dog or cat check out that can find tau, the other hallmark irregular health proteins in Alzheimer's dementia.

Myth #2: The benefit of an early on diagnosis
It's true that if you have Alzheimer's dementia or a related disease, doctors can't give you a get rid of. But getting early on identification can be beneficial. Gangrene - In-depth Of It!

In gangrene, body tissue dies due to an inadequate supply of blood. The main cause of gangrene is the loss of blood supply that occurs due to an underlying illness, injury and/or infection. Generally, it affects fingers, toes, and limbs. But it can also occur inside the body which can cause damage to organs and muscles. There are various types of gangrene and all the types need an immediate appointment with the doctor. In certain cases, gangrene can be life-threatening if left untreated. So, it is important that you visit a doctor as soon as you experience or discover the signs or symptoms of gangrene. Check out the various types of gangrene:

-  Dry gangrene: All the organs of the body including the liver, heart, and muscles require oxygen in order to function properly and survive. Blood carries the oxygen to all the parts of the body. Dry gangrene is caused when one of the body parts does not get enough oxygen. Because of which the body part starts to deteriorate and die. In dry gangrene, there is no evidence of infection.

-  Wet gangrene: When some type of bacteria causes infection in body tissues then it leads to wet gangrene. The tissues grow moist and break down due to the presence of bacteria. This process leads to the death of tissues. In wet gangrene, there are chances of infection reaching to the other parts of the body. Wet gangrene is an emergency condition than the dry gangrene.

-  Gas gangrene: Gas gangrene occurs due to a bacteria which is known as Clostridia. This type of bacteria creates an infection due to which gas bubbles and toxins develop inside the affected area. This lead to the death of tissues. Gas gangrene can be fatal.

Symptoms of Gangrene
In dry gangrene, the first symptom that you generally notice is an appearance of a reddish line around the affected area. This reddish line may turn into black colour after some time. You may or may not have the pain in dry gangrene. Check out the various signs or symptoms of gangrene:

-  Pain due to an infection

-  Red, sore, or swollen wound

-  Pus-filled wound

-  Bad smell due to a wound

-  Feeling cold in an isolated area of your body

-  Lacking a sense of touch in an isolated area of your body

-  Sores keep coming back in the same place on your body

-  Part of your skin may turn into an unusual colour including greenish-black, red, blue, or bronze

-  A cracking sound comes when you press the affected area of your body

-  Feverish and unwell feeling

Causes of Gangrene
Blood has a very important role to play in your body. It not only sends oxygen and nutrients to the cells of your body but also delivers disease-fighting antibodies that prevent your body from infection. Due to an inadequate supply of blood, cells cannot survive, an infection can grow, tissues can die due to gangrene. There are a lot of conditions that can affect the blood flow in your body and all these conditions increase the risk of gangrene. Check out the various causes of gangrene:

-  Diabetes: Due to imbalanced blood sugar levels, blood vessels and nerves can damage. This reduces the oxygen supply to extremities. Dry gangrene can occur due to diabetes.

-  Injury: When the wounds sustained in the situations that allow bacterial infection then wet gangrene can occur.

-  Immune deficiency: Minor infections escalate more quickly and can become gangrenous due to a weakened immune system which can happen due to HIV, diabetes, long-time alcohol or drug abuse, or recent chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

-  Raynaud's disease: In Raynaud's disease, some areas of your body including fingers and toes feel numb and cool in response to certain conditions. Raynaud's disease can lead to dry gangrene.

-  Vascular problems: Vascular problems arise generally due to the poor health of arteries and veins in the legs and toes. Diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, and high blood pressure develop vascular problems over time.

-  Other causes: Atherosclerosis, obesity, smoking, embolism, trauma, severe burns, scalds, and cold are some of the other causes of gangrene.

How is it diagnosed?
As soon as you experience signs of gangrene, you should reach out to a doctor for a diagnosis. Your doctor will conduct a physical examination and ask you about your medical history. Your doctor will look for the signs of shock or trauma. If your doctor finds out that you are suffering from gangrene then further diagnostic tests will be conducted. These tests are conducted to determine the extent and type of the necrosis. Various tests are conducted for the diagnosis:

-  Blood tests: Increase in white blood cells indicate the presence of an infection. Blood tests are also done to check if certain bacteria or other germs present or not.

-  Imaging tests: Imaging tests including an x-ray, a computerized tomography (CT) scan or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan can be done. These tests are done to view the structures of your interior body including internal organs, blood vessels or bones. These tests also help to know the extent of gangrene and see if any gas is present under your skin. An arteriogram is also an imaging test done to produce the images of your arteries. In this test, a dye is injected into the blood circulating through your body and then X-ray images are taken to check the flow of blood through your arteries. This test helps your doctor to know if there is any blockage in your arteries.

-  Surgery: Your doctor may conduct a surgery in order to know the extent of gangrene. Surgery is also done to get the samples of tissue. Sometimes, your doctor may remove the dead tissues surgically if required.

-  Fluid or tissue culture: A common cause of gangrene is bacterium Clostridium perfringens. A culture of the fluid from a blister on your skin may be examined by your doctor for checking the presence of bacteria. Your doctor may look at a tissue sample under a microscope for signs of cell death.

Prevention of Gangrene
Gangrene can be prevented by preventing the risk factors that can cause gangrene. In order to prevent yourself from gangrene, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle. Check out the various ways that reduce the risk of gangrene:

-  You should quit smoking.

-  You should not use drugs.

-  You should maintain a healthy weight.

-  Do physical exercises regularly.

-  You should always eat healthy food.

-  If you have diabetes problem then follow your doctor's advice in order to keep your blood sugar under control.

-  You should avoid or reduce the intake of alcohol.

-  Don’t use warfarin and heparin together. Using warfarin and heparin together can increase your risk of gangrene.

Treatment of Gangrene
As soon as you experience the symptoms of gangrene, you should reach out to your doctor. In the early stage, the chances of recovery are more. In gangrene treatment, dead tissues are removed, infection is prevented or treated so that it does not spread, and cause of gangrene is treated. The treatment that will be provided to you by your doctor will depend on:

-  Type of gangrene

-  Extent of gangrene

-  Your medical history

Check out the various treatment options available:

-  Surgery: Surgery is also known as debridement. In this treatment option, the dead tissue is removed surgically so that infection does not spread. Sometimes, amputation is required. Amputation is the removal of the affected limb, finger or toe surgically to control pain or a disease.

-  Antibiotics: Antibiotics are given in order to treat and prevent infections. These antibiotics are injected into a vein.

-  Maggot therapy: It is a non-surgical treatment option used for removing the dead tissues. Maggot therapy is a common medical technique. In this, maggots from fly larva are placed on a wound so that they can consume the infected and dead tissues. They do not harm the healthy tissues. Maggots help to fight the infection and release substances that kill bacteria which helps in speed up healing or recovery.

-  Oxygen therapy: In some cases of wet gangrene or ulcers related to diabetes or peripheral artery disease, this treatment option of hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be used. In this, a patient is put into a chamber filled with oxygen. The pressure of oxygen is higher than the oxygen found in the outside air. The high level of oxygen saturates the blood and encourages healing of the dead tissue. This process reduces the growth of a bacteria that cannot grow in an environment that has a high level of oxygen.

It is important to know the cause of gangrene so that you can prevent gangrene from occurring again. Your doctor prescribes the treatment option as per the type and extent of gangrene. Medicines may be used in certain cases to prevent blood clots. It is a serious problem that requires immediate treatment. Dry gangrene can be easily treated with the medicines. Gangrene that involves an infection can be a threat to your life. You should reach out to your doctor as soon as you experience the symptoms of gangrene including persistent and unexplained pain in any area in your body, fever, a wound that is slow to heal, or you notice a change in skin colour. In an early stage, the chances of recovery are higher.

-  Amputation:
It is a surgical treatment method in which affected limb, finger or toe is removed to control pain or a disease. This method is used when the amount of tissue death is extensive.

-  Infection: In gangrene, a bacterial infection can spread quickly to other parts of the body. It is a serious problem and can be a threat to your life if left untreated or not treated properly on time.

-  Life-threatening disease: Gangrene is a fatal problem that can be life-threatening if not treated properly on time or left untreated.

-  Large areas of scarring: Gangrene can spread rapidly over a large area of the body and the amount of dead tissue can be quite large. Gangrene can lead to large areas of scarring.

In gangrene, the body tissues die due to lack of blood supply or serious bacterial infection. The various types of gangrene include wet gangrene, dry gangrene, and gas gangrene. Fever, pain due to an infection, feeling cold and lacking a sense of touch in an area of the body, blisters and pus-filled wound are some of the signs of gangrene. As soon as you experience any of the symptoms, you should book an appointment with the best doctor for the diagnosis. In certain cases, it can be a threat to your life if not treated properly or left untreated. Blood tests, imaging tests, surgery, and fluid or tissue culture are various tests conducted to diagnose gangrene. The various treatment options available for treating the problem of gangrene are surgery, antibiotics, maggot therapy and oxygen therapy. You can prevent yourself from gangrene by following a healthy lifestyle which includes maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the intake of alcohol, quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet and more. Amputation is used in the extreme cases in which the affected limb, finger or toe is removed. Your doctor prescribes the treatment method on the basis of the type of gangrene you are suffering from, the extent of your gangrene and your medical history.

Keloid - Know More About It!

MD - Acupuncture, Diploma In Accupuncture, Advanced Diploma In Accupuncture
Acupuncturist, Delhi

A Keloid is an extensive hard growth of a fibrous tissue (also called as scar tissue), which is formed when your body attempts to heal an injured skin even when it is already healed. It is actually a thick skin or tissue generated due to excessive production of collagen of Type - I in the dermis of humans. Normally, such fibrous tissue is formed in a controlled manner, when the skin is injured and needs repair. When it is produced in more quantity than actually required, it takes the form of a keloid.

The shape of the keloids is irregular and may float around the wound itself. The size of a keloid could be more than that of the original injury or wound. You will be able to see keloids mostly on the shoulders, chest, earlobes, and cheeks. But those are not specific to these body parts and could occur at any part of the body with an injury. However, it is noticed that keloids are least likely to appear on the face of its patients.

The keloids do not impose any kind of harm to your health. However, those are the cosmetic concerns for almost all its patients. The only difference between the normal scars and keloids is that the keloids do not regress on their own, as the normal scars do.

Since the keloids are the result of the overgrowth of fibrous tissues, their symptoms arise at the skin position of some prior injury. Following are the general symptoms of keloids:

-  Turning of the normal skin colour to flesh-coloured, either pink or red

-  Slightly up-raising of some area on or near to the previously injured skin

-  Slight and continual growth of the skin area of prior injury over the period of time

-  Itching in the skin area of prior injury

Note that the keloids could spread over a larger area than the initial wound area over the skin. Those may continually grow further over several weeks or even months.

Generally, keloids do not cause any severe harm to your skin, other than the itchy temptation. Rest than that, you would be experiencing uneasiness, sensitivity, or irritation, when those keloids are rubbed with the clothes that you would be wearing. In some rare cases when keloids spread over larger areas of the body, the hard-fibrous tissues may impact your normal and usual routine tasks.

In fact, keloids do not impose any health issues by their own, its patients may feel a little awkward or conscious, when those are larger in a well visible area, like on the wrist or face. When exposed to the sunlight, keloids tend to tan or darken as compared to its surrounding skin, which at times makes its patient feel a bit awkward in going public.

Additionally, children and people with older age are less likely to have keloids on their skin as compared to those in the years of their young age. It is recommended to the patients of keloids to keep those covered in the sunlight to avoid discolouring.

The primary breed places for a keloid are various types of skin injuries, such as:

-  Burn

-  Acne Scar

-  Chickenpox wounds

-  Scratch

-  Ear piercing

-  Surgical areas

-  Vaccination spots

As per the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, around 10% of global individuals suffer a keloid at some point of time in their life. Both the males and females are equally prone to have keloids on their skin injuries. However, the individuals with a little dark or yellowish skin (like those African-Americans), are more likely to have a keloid on their skin. They have the tendency of up to 15 times of developing the keloids on their skin as compared to those with fairer skin.

Some other factors with which individuals are more likely to get the keloids on their body include being:

-   An Asian origin

-  A Latino origin

-  Pregnant women

-   Individuals with age below 30

Keloids are also associated with the hereditary inheritance. It means that those individuals whose either one or both parents have ever faced this problem are more orient to have keloids. Based on the studies and researches, the AHNAK gene plays a crucial role in assessing the probability of developing keloids in the individuals. It means that those individuals who have AHNAK as part of their gene system are more prone to get the keloids on their skin injuries over the others. So, it is recommended that such people should prevent themselves from getting unnecessary piercing, surgery or tattoo on their body.

Note: It is very rare to see patients have both keloids and psoriasis at the same time.

There are certain measures that you must take care after getting an injury over your skin to prevent the formation of keloids. Those include:

-  Take complete care of the wound in order to get it healed at the earliest. You may use the silicone gel pressure pads on the area impacted by injury for a quick recovery and avoiding the chances of getting keloids.

-  Consume food rich in vitamin E and minerals in good quantity when you have any kind of skin injury. This would ensure faster healing of the wound. The tissues of our body tend to get repaired faster when we eat foods rich in collagen. The vegetables such as cucumber and celery, are a very good source of collagen. Other than those, the green leafy vegetables like cabbage, spinach, and kale also contain a considerable amount of collagen, along with other essential antioxidants like lutein. The foods rich in vitamin C also produce collagen within our body itself. Various food items rich in vitamin C include guava, black currant, red pepper, kiwi, green peppers, orange, strawberries, papaya, broccoli, parsley, pineapple, mango, and more. You must consume those in good amount when getting a wound on any part of your body.

-   Avoid unnecessary skin piercings and take care of the injuries, at least when you or either of your parents has the history of getting a keloid in the past.

-  It is found by the researches that the most sensitive piercing area in terms of getting a keloid is the back side of your earlobe. This is because that part of your body is in contact with the metal part of the earring. So, in case you have the passion of wearing a pair of earrings for which you would have got your ears pierced, it is strongly recommended to use a pair of earring with the non-metallic back. This minimizes the chances of getting the development of keloids in that area.

-  Studies have identified that the formation of a keloid due to ear piercing is much more common amongst kids below the age of 11 years. So, you must take care to not get the ears pierced of your kids below this age, especially if they have the history of keloids in their family.

How is it diagnosed?
Generally, you do not need any medical attention for keloids. However, in case you would see any of the above-mentioned symptoms of those on your body, you may consult your physician, who would visually examine and confirm its occurrence. Note that the continual, excessive and uncontrolled growth of keloids may also be the signs of the skin cancer.

So, if the growth of a keloid is not stopping in a few weeks, or maximum in two months, you must consult a doctor and get it treated, if needed. Once after screening the keloid on your skin, the physician may recommend further to get a biopsy test done for a diagnosis of cancer if needed. In this process, a little tissue sample is extracted from the keloid area and sent for the diagnosis for the occurrence of cancer cells.

Once after the diagnosis and confirmation of keloid, the physician would recommend the correct treatment methodology to be followed. A keloid is the result of the human body’s trying to heal the skin or wound. In case the keloid is grown enough, the doctor would recommend getting it removed through some simple and minor surgery. It happens at times that even after getting a keloid removed, it is re-grown back, which may be larger than that of before the surgery.

Note that the large keloids are very difficult to get treated. Apart from the surgery, the following treatments are carried out the suppress the symptoms of a keloid:

-  When there is excessive inflammation, the patient is given the corticosteroid injections to get relieved.

-  Some moisturizing ointments or oils could be applied to soften the keloid tissue.

-  Some doctors recommend using the silicone gel for applying on to the keloid since it helps to shrink those and also from growing further. The best part is that silicone does not cause any kind of side effect and is almost safe for individuals of all age groups.

-  In some cases, the keloid impacted part is frozen for a short period so that the tissue cells over the skin are killed without any side effects.

-  The laser therapy treatment could also be undertaken to minimize the intensity of keloid tissues and stop their further growth.

-  Radiation therapy could also be used in case the keloids are at multiple places on the body.

There are very rare cases identified where keloids would have caused adverse side effects on the skin or any other part of the body. This is the reason why you may leave it untreated even after years of its diagnosis. The only bad thing may be that many of its patients do not like its appearance of their body.

Else than the appearance part, some patients face little difficulties when the size of keloids on their body grow much with which they may make them face problems in wearing clothes, shoes and more. The only critical thing is to get it diagnosed and confirmed by your doctor.

This is because many people could not differentiate between keloids and skin cancer, which would make them face complications at a later stage. The treatment methodologies for keloids are also not much difficult or expensive. So, in case you have also got such kind of problem, you may get it treated by a good doctor.

Myth #1:
Keloid is a preliminary stage of skin cancer

This is absolutely incorrect. Keloid is a disorder with which the growth of tissues over the skin is expanded to an extent. However, in the skin cancer, the growth of the skin cells is unstoppable. If the physician suspects that the scars of the patient’s skin are due to the skin cancer, they may be advised to get a biopsy test done.

Myth #2: Exposure to the sun would help reduce the size and growth of a keloid.

The sunlight never reduces the existing impact or further growth of a keloid. In fact, the exposure to the sunlight tans or darkens the area affected by the keloid. This way, it starts appearing distinctively when compared with its surrounding skin. So, it is recommended for you to be covered in the sunlight in case you are a patient of keloids.

Myth #3: Rubbing the Vitamin E oil would stop the growth of a keloid.

It is true that the Vitamin E oil helps the skin from healing an injury a bit early. However, there are no clinical proofs that it helps in recovering from keloids.

Myth #4: The surgery process for the removal of keloids ensure that they would not reoccur.

This is not necessarily true. At times, keloids are re-grown even after getting those removed through a surgery. Even the size of the new re-grown keloids may be larger than the previous one which was there before the surgery.

Keloids are actually adverse symptoms over your skins, which do not impose any direct health complication by any means. It is, however, very crucial to get it diagnosed and confirmed by a physician even when you are pretty sure about its symptoms. It will be good if you intake vitamin E and minerals in good quantity when you have any kind of skin injury. This would help you in faster healing.
