I am 22 years old and currently doing pg in physics. I have the problem that I usually feel frightened to speak in front of a gathering, and the problem only becomes worse if there are women around. Like I somehow don't feel comfortable in classroom and ask questions to the teacher. I always feel uncomfortable to speak to the girls when they come to for help or to discuss anything. I feel awkward (become red faced and sweat) if people look at me when I speak, but there is no such problem if there is complete darkness or there are only a few known people around. I have always been a bright student with thousands of successes to cheer about but this problem somehow doesn't allow me to enjoy my hard earned successes. Now I am in a fix what to do. I was thinking about taking sbl tranquil. please let me know if it is gonna help.

Stammering is not a disease it's always related to your psyche. Stammering is a normal phenomena it happens to all in different life situations. All have fears, anxieties while talking to strangers, opposite gender or seniors. But god has gifted us with coping mechanisms which help us to deal with such fears or anxieties. If one lag to cope in such situations stammering increases n becomes uncontrollable this is where the problem starts. So try to be confident and never avoid any situation where you feel under confident. Let stammering happen rather than avoiding talking in a particular situation or with someone. It will boost your confidence. Try to consult a good speech pathologist/ therapist. Speech therapy along with counseling will be of greater help. Try to speak slow and boost up your confidence. Talk to all avoid none. Take care.

Hello sir, my name is shubham and I have stammering problem. Which is the perfect medicine for stammering.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry

Dear lybrate-user, as such there is no medicine for stammering. Medicine are only helpful if the cause of stammering is known. Medicines are given for that cause not for stammering per se. So consult psychiatrist and get yourself evaluated.

My son, age 4 yrs, can not speak but to gain attraction he usually cried out very loud. We consult ENT and did several tests like beta, tympanometry and audiometry. One doctor recommend cochlear implant, Another told to go for hearing aid. After various test the people who sell hearing aid are now demanding to deposit 60000 cash as security deposit for the hearing aid. Is this necessary? Can anybody help what should we do?

Ph.D
Audiologist, Bangalore
You have to pay for hearing aids. Free hearing aids are available only in some Government projects like ADIP in selected institutes. But quality of devices not assured. If hearing aids doesn't help, you may try cochlear implants. However, in spite of these amplification devices, auditory training and speech therapy decides the successful treatment.

Stuttering - How Can You Handle It?

DNB PSYCHIATRY, MBBS

Stuttering - How Can You Handle It?

Stuttering is a type of speech disorder wherein, a person speaks slower than normal. It is quite  common in the age group of 3 to 8. The relationship between stress and stuttering has been pondered over for decades now. A lot of people seem to believe that stress and stuttering are co-related. On the contrary, recent studies show that stress is more of a consequence rather than a cause of stuttering. If you take the first theory into consideration, then according to that, children would be the greatest victims of anxiety and stress. But it is seen that the level of stress increases proportionately with the increase in age.

Social anxiety in teenagers increases due to stuttering, when they come across individuals who can speak in a normal pace. This in turn can crush their self confidence and lead them to isolate themselves from social groups and people in general. Hence, it is important to deal with stuttering in the early ages or as and when it occurs.

Sometimes stuttering can develop due to physical or mental trauma.  Most people with stuttering do not seek therapy for it because they might not think of it to be too severe. Little do they realise that a simple process of speech therapy can help them overcome this disability and rejuvenate their level of self-confidence.

It has also come to light, that people with relapse in stuttering post therapy has shown a three-fold increase in anxiety levels than normal. Hence we cannot ignore the strong relationship between stress and stuttering. So from the above evidence, it is safe to conclude that social anxiety or stress develops as a result of chronic stuttering.

How to deal with stress related to stuttering?

Seeking help is a great start to tackle your disability. If your stuttering is prominent enough to warrant therapy, you must seek professional help for the same. You must also learn to control your anxiety by dismissing any anxious thought or make sincere efforts in controlling physical anxiety.

You can also try to increase your social skills by participating in events, such as public speaking that can reduce your stress levels and make yourself more confident about yourself. One must also remember that a person is defined by what he does rather than what he says. So never let a minor disability come in the way of your self worth!

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
