In that case, clean your outer ear with a cloth and try one of the following to remove the blockage: place a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, water, or commercial ear drops into the inner ear to soften the wax, which will allow it to come out more easily.

Ear Infections - Common Signs You Are Suffering From Them!

Ear Infections - Common Signs You Are Suffering From Them!

The structure of the ear can be broadly divided into three parts; the outer ear or visible part, the middle ear and the inner ear. The middle ear is highly susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. Ear infections can affect infants, children and adults. Ear infections are triggered by the blockage or swelling of tubes within the ear. These tubes are known as eustachian tubes.

This may be caused by:

  • Allergies
  • Sinus infections
  • Cold or flu
  • Excessive mucus
  • Smoking
  • Swollen adenoids or an adenoid infection
  • Change in air pressure

Symptoms of an ear infection may be noticed in one or both ears. These symptoms vary from person to person. In some cases, they may come and go while in others, they can be experienced for a long stretch of time. In most cases, symptoms of a chronic ear infection are less noticeable as compared to an acute ear infection.

Some of the most common ear infection symptoms are:

  • Ear pain: In the case of an ear infection in only one ear, the pain may be mild but if it has affected both ears, the patient can be caused considerable pain in the ears. This pain is usually more severe when the patient is lying down.
  • Discharge of pus from the ears: Ear infections that affect the eardrum can cause fluid or pus to flow out of the ears. In some cases, there may also be a little bleeding. Do not plug the ears to keep this discharge from flowing as it can aggravate the infection further.
  • Loss of hearing: A blockage in the middle ear can make sounds appear muffled. This can temporarily affect hearing. It is usually relieved when the infection is cured.
  • Sensation of pressure in the ear canal: The buildup of fluid within the ear canal can make it feel full and create a sense of pressure. If the infection affects only one ear, this pressure can cause a sense of dis-balance.
  • Fussiness in young infants: Ear infections can be very painful and uncomfortable for young infants. It can make it difficult for them to sleep, make them cranky and more irritable than usual.
  • Fever: Ear infections can cause a fever that is often higher than 100 degrees. If it crosses 102 degrees, a doctor must be consulted immediately.
  • Loss of balance: The ears not only help us hear but also influence our sense of balance. A middle ear infection can cause dizziness, vertigo and nausea.

Middle Ear Infection: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Middle Ear Infection: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

The human ear is divided into three parts, namely the outer, middle and inner ear. All these parts function in coherence with each other and help us in converting vibrations into sound and information. The middle ear consists of the air space between the inner ear and the outer ear and contains the bones that transmit the vibrations of the outer ear and translate them into information. This area is prone to infections, especially among children and thus may cause discomfort or pain

Symptoms of middle ear infections: Middle ear infections primarily tend to manifest themselves as inflammation of the tissues and buildup of fluids. Some of the symptoms are mentioned below.

Infections in children: Middle ear infections primarily occur in children although it can occur in adults as well. Some of the common symptoms could be:

  • Ear pain either sitting or standing up and especially while lying down
  • Irritability and crying, which in infants could translate to more than usual crying
  • Problems with sound and difficulties in hearing
  • Fluid buildup causing balance related problems
  • Discharge of fluid in certain cases
  • Unable to sleep and also loss of appetite
  • In some cases children may have high fever

Causes of middle ear infections: The primary cause of middle ear infection is due to the presence of bacteria or virus in the area. The Eustachian tube, which runs from the middle ear to the back of the throat, is connected to nasal passages as well. Any infection that affects the throat or the nose may also affect the middle ear through this tube.

Primary causes for the infections could be

  • Cold or flu like symptoms, which then infect the middle ear as well
  • Otitis media, which is the buildup of fluid and inflammation either due to the presence of bacteria and viruses or even without it
  • Seasonal infections, which are common during late autumn or winters
  • Air pollution is also known to be a factor
  • Infection from others, especially in the case of children when they are part of a group care
  • Children from 6 months to 2 years are also susceptible to middle ear infections as their immune systems are much less developed.

Treatment of middle ear infections: Usually, middle ear infections resolve on their own within a day or so. You can try warm compress with a soft piece of cloth to ease the pain. However, if pain persists for too long then antibiotic medications may be required to fight the infection with pain relief medications to lessen the pain and discomfort. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Try to avoid usage of headphones. Coz by doing that you r putting the sound source close to tympanic membrane. Excess use may cause pain. And the ringing sound is called tinnitus. Some how that is also related to this. So go for otoscopic examination, puretone audiometry, impedance audiometry test. Share the reports with me. If possible consult e. N. T specialist available nearby.
