I am a male, 91 years of age. I am having pain in my left leg, as if some thing is pulling inside. Sometimes it goes upto foot, and it becomes dead. I have to move it to get it working. I am keeping it under control by regular exercise, but pain persists. I hope it is not due to heart problem. Kindly advise.

it could be due to the demyelination of the nerves. the best treatment would be to undergo shashtik shali swedana at a panchakarma centre near you. It will benefit a great deal. Also start taking ashwagandharishtam 15 ml twice a day after meals.

I am a 28 years old female and have leg pains for last 2 weeks. What should I do?
Dear hello, the leg pains could be due many causes. Lack of cacium, b-complex, vit. E or even lack of water and or salt in the body. Else it can be due to problem in the back up there. Drink more fluids, take some extra salt in salad/curd. Take some pain killer for a week with some good calcium, b-complex and vit. E tablets for a month. Sleep on a hard mattress and use commode. If of no avail. Consult an ortho. Surgeon.

You need to see a good doctor. You need to do some exercises daily. They cannot be prescribed here. For sleep, try unwinding listening to music two hours before bed time. Mix with friends, laugh a lot, practise yogasans, relax. You will get sleep.

The conservative management would be to keep ice in that inflamed area during one time in a day and also to sit in a hot water bowl where the penetration of the heat would help to reduce the inflammation. And to reduce the weight falling on the inflamed surface we suggest patients to use air cushion pillow (also called as doughnut pillow) where in the buttock's weight will not fall exactly on the painful pubic bone and that would automatically reduce the pain.

I'm having shoulder pain from last few months what should I do?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist,
I'm having shoulder pain from last few months what should I do?
Hi Thanks for your query and Welcome to Lybrate. I am Dr Akshay from Fortis Hospital, New Delhi. Pain in the shoulder region most commonly can be due to localized reasons in the shoulder or sometimes it is referred from the Neck region. There are multiple reasons for pain due to a localized shoulder pathology, it can occur after an injury, inflammatory or infective etc. If there is localized pain in shoulder region with no gross instability, no H/O any injury and no other s/s of infection like swelling, skin redness, local warmth etc., then it is advisable to initiate Ice packs if the pain is acute in nature, physical therapy, gentle anti-inflammatory medication as per body?s suitability, adequate calcium and Vitamin D Supplementation and wait for response in next 5-7 days. If your pain is not subsiding, then appropriate investigations like X Rays/MRI Scans and blood tests may be required for further evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Hello sir.

Please let me know what to do? And also pain in my back bone and ...
Hello lybrate user, back pain that is associated with day time sedentary jobs like computer professional s are associated with paraspinal muscle spasms. The best way to tackle this sort of pain is to do well spaced stretching exercises of the back, back extension exercises, using hot water bags to provide relief and avoiding stooping posture while sitting. Posture also plays a very important part in back pain, always maintain a straight posture while sitting. While getting up from the bed try to first go on your left or right side of the body and get up side ways. Avoid cruntches or sit-ups: they may increase the pressure on your back and may predispose to slip disc. Always maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of regular brisk walking, meditation, eating healthy. P. S: try to avoid pain killers (analgesics) as much as possible as many are associated with side effects that you may not be aware of. Stay healthy. Stay happy god bless you.

Taking Care of Your Joints as You Age

Taking Care of Your Joints as You Age

Skin is one of the most obvious parts of our body, which ages with an increase in the number of candles on our birthday cake. As you age, joints tend to become stiffer and less flexible. The body does not recover from bumps and bruises as easily as it did before, and it becomes difficult to stand for extended time intervals. This is caused mostly by a breakdown of cartilage and inflammation of the synovium.

What is cartilage?
Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue. It connects the ends of two bones in a joint. It is softer than bone tissue but less flexible than muscle tissue. Cartilage is responsible for the smooth movement of joints.
With age, cartilage begins to degenerate. As the cartilage gets thinner, movement becomes more and more difficult. If left untreated, the cartilage may completely wear off leaving no buffer between the bones. This is one of the leading causes of knee replacement surgery.

What is synovium?
Synovium is a membrane responsible for keeping the cartilage healthy. It produces a thick fluid that keeps the cartilage and joint lubricated. In cases of osteoarthritis, this membrane can swell up and produce excess fluid. This in turn causes the joint to swell as well.

Along with age, factors like being overweight, genetics, gender and lifestyle also play a role in the condition of your joints. Being obese point towards a sedentary lifestyle and puts extra pressure on joints, leading to the thinning of cartilage. While men have higher chances of becoming osteoarthritis patients before 45, women have higher chances of developing this disease after 50. A healthy lifestyle is the easiest way to ensure that your joints work well even when you're old and grey.

Exercise
Movement of the joints keeps the fluid in them moving. It also prevents the cartilage from shrinking and stiffening up. Exercise also makes the bones stronger, and slows the rate of bone tissue deterioration. Stretching exercises are also a good way to maintain the flexibility of joints.

Healthy diet
Foods that are known as natural antihistamines, antioxidants and foods that fight inflammation promote healthy joints. Some of these are:

  1. Green tea: It prevents the breakdown of collagen and cartilage
  2. Nuts and seeds: These are rich in omega 3 fats that are essential for good bone health
  3. Ginger: It relieves pain and joint swelling
  4. Yogurt: It helps soothe tender joints and fights inflammation
  5. Pomegranate: It protects the cartilage against damage

Hot and cold therapy can also help relieve joint pain and reduce inflammation. As you get older, avoid putting too much pressure on your joints and give them adequate rest. Lastly, avoid smoking, as people who smoke have an increased risk of cartilage loss.

Hello, you can use Volini spray or Moov cream for the back ache but make sure that the spray or cream does not touch the baby's skin. The child's skin will be sensitive and may cause irritation. You can try simple measures like exercises and physiotherapy if you are not relieved.
