knee pain

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,

KNEE PAIN- HOW TO TAKE CARE

Wear and tear of body is inevitable. And joints are
the worst affected as we age, out of which the knees rule.

A popping sound with pain in the knee, swelling and inability to
put weight on the leg indicate a knee sprain or a tear. Fractures,
dislocations, cartilage injuries, arthritic changes or bursitis are
painful enough. But how to avoid knee injuries and pain? Knee pain
can improve with some good body mechanics like change in movement,
ergonomics, exercise and care.

1. Never ignore pain. Pain is one of the first warning signs that
something is amiss. After a few days of home treatment if the knee
pain worsens or does not improve it is time to call the doctor!

2. Get rest. Rest is a must if you are a very physically active
person. And all the more so if you are above 30.

3. Weight control is mandatory if your knees hurt. Being overweight
increases your chances of knee pain especially the arthritic one as
the excess load causes the degeneration of the cartilage. You can
try walking or a stationary bike for exercise without traumatising
the joints.

4. Too much of physical activity including strenuous exercises can
cost you your knees. Straining the body on the pretext of
weight loss, a sudden increase in the duration of the activity or a
rapid increase in the intensity are unwise. Always warm up with
stretches and cool down adequately.

5. If you have duck feet (walking with feet turned out) you are
more susceptible to knee pain.

6. Be careful while lifting weights as they are only bad for your
back but also for your knees. Bend carefully putting the knees back
and heels down. Put the weight on your muscles and off your knees.

7. Discard hard shoes but use soft breathing flexible shoes
recommended for the desired activity.

8. Know that some cholesterol lowering drugs, antacids and the like
may cause knee pain.

Knee injuries need not remain forever. Time and rest can heal most
of them and not often do they call for surgeries.

Take care!

Wishing you good health,

I am 20 years old. I got a backpain from last 3-4 months. What precautions should I take?
Hi, preventive measures for backache include: 1) maintain a healthy weight. 2) keep your sitting posture correct/straight. Do not slouch 3) avoid bending from back while lifting something from ground, instead bend at your knees. 4) hot fomentation to lower back or the painful part. 5) keep the coir side of your mattress up to give your back firm support and change the mattress if it is curved. 6) wear comfortable footwear with shock absorbing soles in shoes. In case above measures do not help, take rhus. Tox-30, 2 drops in 1 tsp water thrice a day for a week and revert back: now-a-days most backaches are due to vitamin d deficiency. Sit in sun and expose the long bones and back to sunrays. Also drink 2 glasses of milk daily.

I am suffering from diabetes and feel back ache when ride motorcycle and very weak in sexually. Please advise me.
Firstly and foremost is control of diabetes in normal range. Sexual functions & other things will improve when will when sugar is under control. Do go for one hour of brisk walking in the morning and evening and that will help you to tone yourself and reduce sugars. Relax and follow instructions.

Pros and Cons with armanentarium of Knee surgery : Arthroscopy surgery to manage
meniscal lesions and correcting
ligament deficit help to save the joint
from deteriorating and in specific
cases cartilage reconstruction can
also be carried out to save joints and
avoiding replacement surgery. All
joints can be managed by
arthroscopy with knee, shoulder, hip
being large joints and frequently
subjected for surgery.
If at all one has to undergo Joint
replacement a lot of improvement
can be achieved by using specialised
techniques, advancements:
#2; Minimally invasive joint
replacement (MIS) : using not only
small incisions but preventing cutting
of muscles ,bones or tendons like
OCM approach and yet gaining
visibility of wide exposure is the crux
of MIS approaches. One should be
sufficiently trained in these to impart
results.
#2; Partial/Unicondylar knee
arthroplasty: A majority of patients
have medial knee arthritis to begin
with and unicondylar knee
arthroplasty can save you from total
knee replacement for years to
decades. Advantages of high mobility
and kneeling, cross leg sitting and
faster mobilisation.
#2; Computer Navigation Joint
replacement: This system can be
used with newer implants of any
make to optimise outcome with the
help of computer precision
technology with navigation systems
perfection can be aimed for implants
placement, thus achieving basic
essential of good function and
longevity of replaced joint.

Causes And Treatment Of Heel Pain!

MPTh/MPT, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Guwahati
Causes And Treatment Of Heel Pain!

Heel pain is a common problem in the body where the affected person experiences pain radiating from the heel bone. Heel pain usually progresses slowly over time, it is recommended to consult a medical professional, if heel pain turns severe. The pain tends to most severe after one has been inactive for some time such as after waking up in the morning.

Causes
Heel pain is usually caused when tissues present in the bottom of the heel (Plantar fascia) is damaged. These tissues connect the heel bone with the bones of the feet and help in absorbing shocks. Tears are formed in these tissues when they are damaged or when they get thicker. These tissues are at an increased risk of wear and tear for those who are over 45 years old. The risks also tend to increase if the person is obese or whose occupation requires standing for lengthy periods of time.
Among other causes of heel pain are heel bone fractures, fat pad atrophy (a condition where a layer of fat present under the heel bone is reduced) and bursitis (inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs present around the joints). Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where damage occurs in the peripheral nerves (that transmits signals between the central nervous system and the rest of the body), this can cause pain in the heel.

Symptoms
The symptoms of heel pain include:

  1. Experiencing pain while jogging or walking
  2. A feeling of pins pricking the heels after waking up in the morning
  3. Inability to bend the heel
  4. Painful swelling
  5. Pain in the heel accompanied by fever

Prevention and treatment
Heel pain can be prevented by taking certain preventive measures such as restricting usage of high heeled shoes without proper support and stretching the heel regularly. Medications such as painkillers are used to treat symptoms of heel pain. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a physiotherapist.

Check your uric acid levels which might cause knee pain. I suggest you to do hot water fermentations that would help you to get relieved from joint pains. I also suggest you to go for good ayurvedic body massage which would help you to get relieved from joint pain and also swimming activity is advisable. But food precautions, it is better to avoid tamarind in the food instead you can add lime or mango. And also avoid eating fried foods.
