I have a deep cut on the sclera. Is there any threat to my vision and do I need to undergo surgery?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
It should be evaluated by ophthalmologist to know whether it is really deep or not. If it is, it might hamper your vision and you may require minor surgery to close the wound (again depending on depth of wound).

Hello lybrate-user. Pain in the eyes and headache may have multiple causes associated with it. Let me enumerate the various causes in brief: (1) change in the power of glasses (in case you are using glasses). If you are not using glasses, you may need to use them. (2) allergy/infection/ foreign body in the eye. This requires prompt assessment and treatment. (3) raised eye pressure. This is usually a hereditary problem. It may also be precipitated by certain medications and drugs. (4) migraine: it may cause eye pain along with headache and associated signs and symptoms. (5) raised blood pressure: fluctuations in the blood pressure may cause pain in the eyes along with headache. (6) sinusitis / fever/ infection: it is an inflammation/ infection in the sinus spaces around the eyes. It is frequently associated with allergy. (7) other neurological issues. They would require assessment by a neurosurgeon/ physician. There are a few points you need to look at before jumping to any conclusions. Have you undergone an eye check up previously? is there any history of raised pressure in your eyes? do you have anybody in your family having raised eye pressure? do you suffer from recurrent cold, fever, cough, etc? do you have a lot of work/ study related stress? do you use glasses? do you have any history of migraine? do you have any history of brain problem? have you consulted a neurologist before? is there any history of eye injury or head injury? the reason for asking all these questions is that headache and eye pain may occur due to various reasons ranging from change in glasses, sinusitis, migraine, glaucoma, tension, blood pressure and so on. The list is long. It would be a good idea to have a look at your eyes. This would help in coming to a decision whether your eye pain and headache is due to an eye problem hope my suggestions help you. Take care.

Foot Care & Eye Care In Diabetes

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Foot Care & Eye Care In Diabetes

Diabetes can wreak havoc on the eye and the foot. Proper care is necessary in order to refrain from any serious consequences. It can damage the blood vessels and the nerves of the feet resulting in numbness and permanent disability. Some of the alarming foot symptoms include bruises, cuts, cracked skin and hard spots. Some of the common measures that need to be taken for foot include checking the temperature sensation of the foot by immersing it in hot water, drying the feet gently in between the toes and using agents such as lotion, lanolin, and petroleum jelly.

Some of the other preventive measure includes cutting the nails when they are young and straight to ensure no injury to the foot takes place. It should be ensured the toe is not touched by the nail of the toe. A pumice stone can be used to get rid of the corns immediately after a bath. No medicated pads or sharp razors should be utilised to cut corns. The feet should be soaked in warm water before trimming nails.

A shoe should be put on at all times to save the feet. The shoe sole should be thoroughly checked for foreign objects such as stones and nails to ensure that the foot is not hurt. Tight shoes should be strictly avoided in order to refrain from soreness and blisters. Dry and clean socks should be put up to ensure the foot is clean. For people living in cold area, wearing thick socks should be practised. This will help the foot protect from cold. Finally, a doctor should be called in case there are any visible signs of swelling, redness, cracks, pain or sensation of burning.

Too much blood sugar can cause harm to the eye in four ways: It can cause damage to the retina, lens, optic nerve and vitreous gel. There could be serious repercussions of diabetes to the eye including low vision and complete loss of vision. Diabetes blocks the retina and is capable of cutting off the total supply of oxygen.

Some of the common symptoms of retina related problems include double vision, a pressure in one eye, problems in corner vision, flashing lights, pain in the eye, blank spots etc. A simple check up by an oculist can reveal any eye problems related to diabetes.

An ophthalmologist can treat the diabetes-related eye problem by medicine that blocks the protein responsible for fluid leakage and blood vessel growth. He can also go for laser treatment to treat macular edema. Even scatter laser treatments are also used for this purpose. If all else fails a doctor chooses to perform a procedure known as vitrectomy.

Hello, Get your eyes tested from an Opthalmologist. Include the following for getting better vision: Vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. DHA is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for eyes: Warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. Roll your eyes. Start by looking up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise. Focus. Hold a pen at arm's length, focus your eyes on it, and slowly bring the pen closer until it's about 6 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the pen, 10 times in all. Massage your temples. Using your thumb knuckles, massage your temples in small circles, 20 times in one direction and 20 in the other. Repeat the same actions above the mid-point of the eyebrows at the forehead, then below the eyes on both sides of the bridge of the nose. Take a mini-nap. Put your head back, close your eyes, and relax for 3 minutes. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing first and reducing the power of your eyes. Take Physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance.

Hello. There is no medication or food for improving eye sight or to get rid of glasses. Get your vision tested and wear glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser as your age is now 20 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.

Prolonged near vision work can affect the intrinsic muscles of the eye causing problems with auto focus and muscles balance. Follow 20-20-20 rule. It means after every 20 minutes for 20 seconds look beyond distance of 20 feet. And do paalming- the warmth of hands relaxes the eyes. If not much relieved, you may have some uncorrected refractive error. An eye examination will readily offer you the correct solution.

Hello. You could use preservative free eye drops (eg. Genteal eye drops 4 to 5 times daily for a period of 3 months. I have a few suggestions for you regarding the usage of computers, mobile phones and books. Staring at the computer continuously causes us to subconsciously blink less than normal. This causes the tear film on the surface of the eye to dry up. The result of this is pain, discomfort, etc. You are already following the rule of" 20" this means that every 20 minutes, take a gap of 20 seconds, blink your eyes actively 20 times and focus at an object which is minimum 20 feet away. This will help in relieving your eyes from the continuous strain that is caused due to staring. Another suggestions regarding the usage of computers is to maintain a proper posture. The computer must be positioned at the same height as your eye level. The neck should not be inadvertently flexed or extended. Roughly, an angle of 90 degrees should be maintained between your upper body and thighs. Likewise, a similar angle (90 degrees) should be maintained between your lower legs and thighs. Also the angle between your hands and arms should be roughly 90 degrees. This is the healthy ergonomic way of sitting while using a computer. Maintenance of proper posture would help in further relieving the symptoms of eye discomfort and pain. You could consider preservative free lubricant eye drops 4 to 5 times daily. These eye drops would ensure that your eyes stay well lubricated and fresh. All these suggestions may take a while to sink in and imbibe in your routine. Once followed, they are sure to work wonders for you. Hope my suggestions help you. Take care. Regards-dr. Chaitanya.
