My son is 2.3 years old. He is having fever. I have consulted doctor and he prescribed me syrup to give 5 ml dose in gap of 6-6 hours and told it is viral fever. After the dose fever goes and again after 6 hrs it starts, what should I do?

If it is viral fever it should settle down in a few days. In case the fever persists you must review again with your doctor, may be he may advise some investigations to look into the other possible cause of fever.

Calcium Supplements like Shelcal ( for elderly) and Calci max suspension(for children) contain Calcium carbonate as one of the main components.People say that one should avoid these supplements as the Calcium carbonate present in these can cause stones after a period of time. If this is true, kindly advise alternate calcium supplements for elderly as well as children which are totally safe.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
These supplements are safe as long as they are given in prescribed doses for a specific duration for a specific deficiency. If there is a diagnosed deficiency of any nutrient, it has to be evaluated and then correction given. These are drugs and no one should use any drug for prolonged durations in unspecified doses.

First of all you shouldcstopbbottle feeding. Insist on home nade cereaks like dalia khichri suji ka halwa rice curd rice dal fruit vegetables etc The child should be motivated to take home made cereals. Milk or milk products can be given by spoon glass. I am sure with patience and perseverance the child can start eating cereals.

My son is 3 years old son, he doesn't eat anything, we use" Apti must" hungry syrup, but he doesn't eat anything, please give me a best suggestion?

MD Paediatrics, MBBS

All children of this age group have such complaints I mean to say parents of such children. Children are very moody, do not force them to eat. As long as they are active need not worry, just keep calm.

The tiny tots must use a toothbrush with a small rounded brush head and soft bristles. It helps in cleaning their milk teeth thoroughly.

For constipation give high roughage diet like fruits and vegetables, roti. Give more fluids including water. If he is constipated for along time rectal enema once to evacuate the bowels. Then you can use glycerine suppository perrectal daily for 3 days and then as per need. Give syp lactulose 5ml twice a day for about I month till he starts passing normal stools daily. Important to remember is that high roughage adequate diet is most important.

Uti is notorious. Recurrent fever is common in uti due to either incomplete treatment or under dosing. Some urinary tract abnormality is also responsible for recurrent uti even after proper tt. C/s of urine may be negative if done during tt with antibiotics. Anyway, if there is no chance of recurrent uti, then thorough investigation is required. Preliminary blood test cbc and gbp/ pbs is needed. I am sure he must be under care of pediatrician and must be taking all precaution as required in lactose intolerance.
