All About Bipolar Disorder

MD - Podiatrist
Psychiatrist, Lucknow
All About Bipolar Disorder

We all have mood swings but not all mood swings have the same intensity. People who have extreme mood swings ranging from depression to manic highs are said to be suffering from bipolar disorder. These extreme moods are known as episodes and usually, last for a few days or even a few weeks. A person suffering from bipolar disorder could have an episode several times a year. This is a very common psychological problem and can affect both children and adults. Though it cannot be cured, this disease can be managed with medication.

There are no known causes for bipolar disorder but genetics may play an important role in triggering Bipolar Disorder. Hence, if a parent or sibling suffers from this condition, you have a risk of developing it as well. An imbalance in the neurotransmitters in the brain may also play a part in the development of this condition. Stress or traumatic events like the loss of a loved one can also increase your risk of suffering from this condition. Given that mood swings affect almost each one of us, bipolar disorder can be difficult to diagnose. Some of the things to look out for are:

  1. Change in self-esteem
  2. Unusual talkativeness or quietness
  3. Being increasingly prone to distractions
  4. Decreased need for sleep
  5. Agitation
  6. Recklessness in terms of spending decisions, relationships etc

It must be kept in mind that a person must display at least 4 of the above symptoms simultaneously to be diagnosed as bipolar. Also, none of these symptoms should be a result or side effect of any kind of medication, drugs, alcohol or other intoxicants.

There are four main types of bipolar disorder:

  1. Bipolar I: In such cases, the person has at least one episode of elevated moods and associated abnormal behaviour in his or her life. This may be preceded or followed by depressive episodes.
  2. Bipolar II: In these cases, the person must have suffered from at least one depressive episode. It is very similar to bipolar I except that in bipolar II the highs never reach the manic stage.
  3. Rapid Cycling: Some people can have 4 or more manic and depressive episodes a year. In such cases, they are said to be rapid cycling. This condition affects 10-20% of bipolar cases.
  4. Mixed Bipolar: Usually, bipolar patients show mood swings that alternate between manic and depressive moods. However, sometimes a person may experience both elation and depression simultaneously or in rapid succession of each other. These cases are known as mixed bipolar.

Once diagnosed, bipolar disorder can be managed with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. In some cases, electroconvulsive therapy may also be needed. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist and ask a free question.

I am having G6PD reaction from birth. Any one has its solution. Because of G6PD I can't eat so many things.

General Physician, Faridabad
Most people can recover from the condition on their own. Once g6pd deficiency has progressed to hemolytic anemia, however, more aggressive treatment may be required. This usually includes oxygen therapy and a blood transfusion to replenish oxygen and red blood cell levels.

Indigestion - Can Medication Cause It?

General Physician, Bangalore
Indigestion - Can Medication Cause It?

Indigestion refers to the discomfort in your upper belly or abdomen after you have eaten your food. Indigestion in many cases has an underlying problem like gastro esophageal reflux disease, ulcers or disorders of your gall bladder. Indigestion is also known as dyspepsia in medical terms.

The causes of indigestion due to the presence of any diseases or underlying medical conditions consist of the following:
1. Problems like ulcers
2. In rare cases it could be initial symptoms of stomach cancer
3. Chronic pancreatitis
4. Thyroid disease
5. Infections in your stomach and irritable bowel syndrome
6. Pregnancy could also result in indigestion

Some of the lifestyle habits that can cause indigestion are mentioned below:
1. Excessive consumption of alcohol
2. Smoking cigarettes
3. Stress and fatigue in daily life
4. Consumption of foods with high fat content
5. Regular and excessive intake of fried and oily foods

Medications can also cause indigestion and some of those could be:
1. Steroid medications
2. Thyroid medicines
3. Certain of antibiotics in heavy doses
4. Oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement medications
5. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen
6. Painkillers

Sometimes indigestion may not be related to the factors mentioned above and yet persist within your body. This type of indigestion is known as functional or non ulcer dyspepsia. You should contact a medical professional immediately if the symptoms of indigestion include some of the following:
1. Back pain
2. Jaw pain
3. Heavy sweating and anxiety
4. Indigestion that lasts longer than one day
5. Severe and sudden pain in the abdomen
6. Problems when you try to swallow food
7. Vomiting or presence of blood in your stool
8. Sudden loss in your weight
9. Skin and eyes turning yellow in color which is a tell tale sign of jaundice

In case your indigestion persists for too long and doesn’t respond to conventional treatment, your doctor might prescribe some of the following tests.
1. Ultra sound tests of your abdomen
2. Blood tests
3. Upper endoscopy
4. Physical examination of your digestive tract and the stomach area
5. Questions by the doctor about what symptoms you may be facing and how they are manifesting within your body

I am having a tight ridged band on my penis foreskin. When penis is flaccid I can pool back the skin but when it gets erect I can not pull. please help.

Dear lybrate user, you may be suffering from a clinical condition called phimosis. The most conventional method to get rid of it is surgery. However, if you are unwilling to undergo surgery then you can try the following process at home. 1) buy any local anaesthetic gel (e. G. Lidocaine, lignocaine, xylocaine) from allopathic retail shop. 2) apply a little amount of that anaesthetic gel at the lower part of the prepuce of penis where the foreskin remains attached. 3) after application of the gel, retract the foreskin backwards as far as you can. Due to the anaesthetic property of the gel you will be able to retract the foreskin backwards to some extent more than you can do in normal condition. 4) release the foreskin when you feel pain 5) again repeat the same process. Do it continuously for at least 30 minutes in a day. Within a month you will feel that your foreskin has become loose.

Hello doctor, Actually my sister who is 17 have almost severe anemia having haemoglobin-6 mg/dl, and she also have kidney stones. I want to know what she have eat I order to recover soon and which doesn't exaggerate her stone pain.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
You have severe anemia and need IV injection of iron sorbitol in hospital and take iron capsules drink a lot of water for stones .the diet suggestions seem to depend on the specific type of stone that you have formed in the past (calcium and/or oxalate containing kidney stones, for example.) Definitely consult your doctor for diet recommendations but the following are possible suggestions to consider with him/her: If you had a calcium-containing kidney stone, eat less salt and salty food and try not to get more than the recommended daily amount for calcium or excessive amounts of vitamin D. If you had an oxalate-containing kidney stone, limit food that has a lot of oxalate (no need to eliminate them, just eat/drink less. This includes: Chocolate Dark green veggies (i.e. Spinach, Swiss chard, greens) Mixed nuts and peanuts Tahini and sesame seeds Beets Rhubarb Miso Chocolate soy milk Sweet potatoes Lemons to the rescue Lemon juice is thought to be helpful mainly because it contributes extraordinary amounts of citrate and citrate may help in two ways. It makes the urine less acidic (discouraging stone development) and it can bind with calcium in the urine, potentially reducing the amount of calcium available to form calcium oxalate stones.

I am 21 years old. Is. Eating daily neem leafs early in the morning with empty stomach after exercise and drinking haldi milk Is good for health and skin. please give me clear answer and if it is good how. And if it is bad then y.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. Thankyou for the query. There is no problem having turmeric milk and neem leaves. Turmeric is good for skin. The problem is that we try to reach out for singular remedies. Understand that any remedy will work only if it is a part of a good routine. If your overall routine is not good, adding any food or remedy will not work. So, add these foods as a part of a healthy diet and lifestyle and it will surely benefit you.
