Exercise Induced Asthma

DNB (Respiratory disease), Fellowship Bronchoscopy, MBBS
Pulmonologist, Ahmedabad
Exercise Induced Asthma

What is exercise-induced asthma? — exercise-induced asthma is when a person with asthma has breathing problems during or after exercise. Doctors often call it" exercise-induced bronchoconstriction" instead. That's because exercise does not actually cause asthma. But it can trigger symptoms in some people who already have asthma.

What are the symptoms of exercise-induced asthma? — symptoms can include:

●coughing
●a tight feeling in the chest
●shortness of breath
●wheezing (hearing a whistling sound when you breathe)

Symptoms happen when the airways in the lungs become narrow and inflamed (figure 1). In people with exercise-induced asthma, this usually happens about 10 to 15 minutes after starting to exercise. In most cases, the symptoms go away after about 1 hour.

These symptoms are different from shortness of breath that happens during an asthma" attack" or flare-up. A person having an asthma flare-up might have more trouble breathing if he or she tries to exercise. That's because the airways are already narrowed.

Is there a test for exercise-induced asthma? — yes. But if you already know you have asthma, you might not need testing. Your doctor might be able to tell that you have exercise-induced asthma based on your symptoms. Or, your doctor might have you do a breathing test, such as:

●an" exercise challenge test" – this involves using a treadmill or exercise bike for several minutes, then doing a breathing test. The test shows your doctor how your lungs are working. A similar test involves inhaling a special mixture of dry air while breathing fast, like you would if you were exercising.

●a test that involves breathing in a special medicine – for this, you do a breathing test before and after inhaling the medicine. If you have asthma, the medicine will cause your airways to narrow.

Your doctor might also check for other problems that can cause similar symptoms. For example, people with vocal cord narrowing, lung disease, and some heart problems can have trouble breathing after exercising.

How is exercise-induced asthma treated? — if you get exercise-induced asthma, you can treat it with a" quick-relief" medicine. It comes in an inhaler and treats asthma attacks or flare-ups. The medicines used for this are short-acting beta agonists (called" sabas" or" short-acting bronchodilators").
Examples of sabas are albuterol and levalbuterol.

Your doctor or nurse will tell you how and when to use your inhaler. Most people need 2 puffs to relieve symptoms. If you keep having symptoms, you can take 2 puffs again after 20 minutes. If you get exercise-induced asthma, make sure you have your" quick-relief" inhaler with you anytime you plan to exercise.

If you are having symptoms but don't have your inhaler, or if you still have trouble breathing after using it, call for an ambulance.

Some people feel shaky after taking a saba. If this happens, talk to your doctor or nurse. He or she might switch you to a different medicine or lower your dose.

Can exercise-induced asthma be prevented? — yes. First, it's important to take all your asthma medicines the way your doctor or nurse tells you to. Keeping your asthma controlled can lower the chances of having symptoms when you exercise.

You can also:

●take medicine before you exercise – this usually involves using your" quick-relief" inhaler 5 to 15 minutes before exercising, to help prevent symptoms. Sabas are the medicines most often used to prevent exercise-induced asthma. But some people, such as children who are physically active many times a day, get another type of asthma medicine instead.
If you exercise most days of the week and need your" quick-relief" medicine each time, your doctor might suggest an asthma controller medicine if you don't already take one. This is a medicine you take every day, even when you are not having symptoms. This way you won't need the" quick-relief" medicine as often.

●avoid exercising in certain conditions – very cold, dry air can make symptoms worse. If you do exercise outside on a very cold day, it might help to wear a loose scarf or mask over your nose and mouth. It can also help to avoid exercising in polluted air, or around pollen or mold if you are allergic.

●warm up before you exercise – some people find that a warm-up period helps prevent exercise-induced asthma. But this isn't true for everyone.

You should not avoid exercise completely in order to prevent exercise-induced asthma. Exercise is important for staying healthy. Plus, regular exercise and better fitness can actually help reduce asthma symptoms. Your doctor and nurse can help you figure out what kind of exercise is best for you, and how to prevent and treat symptoms.

Yes, it is possible but success depends on tubal condition and Surgery. No one can say no risk as one surgery for reversal and one more Caesarean both have risks. Maximum you can reduce risk of reversal surgery by opting for IVF (test tube baby- Costly and and if does not succeed in first trial you pay again)

Hi lybrate-user, go for urine pregnancy test at earliest and if it turns positive, its good news for you and then you have to consult your doctor at earliest, because of spotting. If upt is negative, then either wait for freeflow of period or confirm by ultrasound/ beta hcg.

Dietary Tips to get rid of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Hi, I am DT. Sheela Suhag Seharawat, Mentor Diet Clinic. We are in this field since 11 years and treating so many therapeutic patients, adn specially aajkal jo young girls mein ya ladies mein jo ek main problem aa rahi hai wo hai PCOS. PCOD ki kaafi problem aa rahi hai, basically wo start ho jaati hai 15yrs k baad, and PCOD is a hormonal imbalance jis se ki aapke body mein kaafi changes ho jaate hai jo ki aapke weight gain me bhi problem karti hai. So, PCOD ko treat karne k liye definitely aapko ek Gynecologist ki help leni padegi but saath mein aap apne diet ko healthy karke PCOD ko kaafi hadh tak treat kar sakte ho. Qyunki PCOD aur weight loss both are directly realted.

To first of all aapko PCOD control karna hai to aapko apna weight control karna padega and uske liye kuch points aapko apne mind mein rakhne padege. Jaise ki aap PCOD k liye sab se pehle processed food ko na bolein because processed food jitne bhi hotein hai wo aapke hormone imbalance ka problem karega to better hai avoid processed food. Second thing PCOD k liye aap ko apna weight cut down karna padega. Weight k liye aap ko jo main tips, aap k dietician provide kar sakte hai ya aap ko like high fibre diet, low carbs diet, high protein diet wo humein mind me rakhna padega. PCOD k liye humein aapne carbohydrate ko definitely apne diet mein ek controlled way se lena padega. Carbohydrate ko hum jitna low rakhege apne diet mein utna humara PCOD mein wo benefit rahega. Carbohydrate lo but kosish karo wo aap protein k sath lene ki to wo aap ka zyada beneficial rahega.

PCOD k liye aap refined flours ko jitna aap k diet se avoid kar sakte ho utna behtar hai. Refined flours mein jaise suji, maida, jo bhi aap k bahar k junk foods hai un cheezo ko aap jitna avoid kar sakte hai utna aapke liye behtar hoga. And PCOD k liye ek main cheez jo mai definitely aapko bolungi wo hai kam se kam 20-30min ki walk agar aap daily routine me include kar sakte ho to wo aap k liye bohot hi faaidemandh sidh hoga. Healthy Dietary Habits - 3 Habits That Are Actually 'Unhealthy'!

Healthy Dietary Habits - 3 Habits That Are Actually 'Unhealthy'!

With the vast amount of available information, ranging from age-old wisdom to health magazines and health sites, most people are prone to misinformation when it comes to what to eat and what to avoid. From drinking copious amounts of water to eating a light lunch, it is the time that these commonly known health tips are debunked.

These 3 habits that may seem healthy on the surface but are actually harming you!

  1. Drinking large amounts of water: It is advisable to drink a healthy dose of water each day, but you should drink water only when you feel thirsty and not otherwise. If you drink water beyond your level of thirst, it can lead to excess water intake. This excessive intake can be the cause of conditions like obesity, skin and digestive problems among other health conditions. An average person consumes 8 glasses of water each day. But you are advised to drink that much, only if you are thirsty enough. It is also recommended not to drink cold water or ice-cold drinks.
  2. Eating uncooked foods: It is essential to preserve the nutrients of the ingredients you eat, but it is equally important to make them digestible. Cooking involves subjecting the ingredients to heat, which helps to remove and kill certain impurities and bacteria in them. Cooked foods are easily broken down, and hence, digested with ease. Some vegetables and foods are even more beneficial when lightly cooked. Vegetables like Brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and kale should not be consumed raw.
  3. Eating a light lunch: The ideology behind eating a light lunch may be to keep your weight in check and to stay healthy, but if the food you're having is not nutritious, it can still cause you to gain weight. Some food joints even offer a lunch menu of light proportions while the dinner menu may be packed with heavy amounts of food. This is wrong. It is advisable that people have larger proportions of food in their lunch while dinner should be meager as your digestion slows down as the day progresses. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

Why Is Eating Very Fast Bad For Your Health?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition (Delhi University)
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Panipat
Why Is Eating Very Fast Bad For Your Health?
Why is eating fast bad for your health?

Are you a fast-eater? as a child most of us are told to slow down, chew the food well and only then gulp it down. Most of us have been told time and again to slow down and chew while eating. Yet, some people continue with the habit of eating fast. This might change if they knew what their speed of eating can do to their body.

Evils of eating food very fast -

1. Slows digestion - eating and swallowing fast means that the food has not been chewed properly. This delays and complicates the process of digestion. For proper digestion, the food needs to be broken down. Also, when we do not chew properly, the food that goes down the throat, is accompanied by lesser saliva, the enzymes of which are needed for the digestion to begin.

2. Can make you bloated - while eating in a hurry, chances are also there that we swallow air along without food. This makes are bloated and also gives us stomach gas.

3. Makes you eat more - to feel full, the brain and the stomach need to be at the same page to emit the signal of fullness. However, if you don't chew and just swallow, the brain-stomach coordination will break and you will end up eating more than what you need to.

4. Leads to weight gain - overeating will lead to problems like weight gain, indigestion, etc.

5. May choke you - more than thirty different muscles are required to swallow and if eating in a hurry, you increase the chance of food going down the wrong pipe, which can choke you.
