5 Wonderful Things That Happen to Your Body When You Quit Sugar!

MD - Diabetology, Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), MBBS
Endocrinologist, Kochi
5 Wonderful Things That Happen to Your Body When You Quit Sugar!

On an average a person consumes nearly 800 calories daily from added sugar. This does not just include natural sugar found in fruits or milk but the processed sweet sugar as well, that is added to cakes, tea, coffee, confectionery and even pasta sauce and salad dressing. However, it is possible that you can limit your sugar intake or even quit it to get some truly amazing benefits.

When you take this hard decision, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as mild depression, anxiety or restlessness. But if you remain adamant and continue with your decision, your body will soon show some incredible results that you couldn't have imagined.

Here are a few of them:

1. Your heart will beat happily

Sugar raises insulin levels that activate the responses of sympathetic nervous system thereby elevating your bp and heart rate. When you cut down on sugar, your ldl cholesterol will decrease by 10% and triglycerides will reduce by 20-30%. And your risk of heart attack will reduce manifold.

2. Your weight fluctuations will be gone

With the exception of fruits, sugar is mostly present in processed or high-carb foods that contain loads of other unwanted constituents like fat etc.

So when you quit sugar, your body has to no longer worry about those unwelcome calories and your weight will stop moving right and left across the scale.

3. Digestion will become efficient

When you quit sugar, the digestive system becomes more efficient. Since your stomach and intestines have to no longer worry about those difficult to digest processed foods, their abilities and functioning improves. Even your colon begins to work better, may be you take more trips to the restroom, so things get even more on track.

4. No more acne troubles

Sugar triggers acne troubles. When you cut it down, you will no longer be troubled by those zits that dampen your looks. Your skin will actually clear up, cracks will disappear and you will get a healthier skin.

5. You will no longer have sweet craving

With sugar, there is a huge negative, as you enjoy sweets, you crave for more sweets. But if you quit sugar, slowly you will begin to avoid foods that contain sugar and as a result, whenever you will eat anything that has sugar, it will taste over sweet and you will not be able to have large portions. This means no more cravings for sugar!

Skin Care Tip for Acne

Skin Care Tip for Acne
1.Wash your hands frequently and try not to touch your face too often.

2.Keep your hair from falling on the face or forehead.

3.Avoid the use of make-up; try to let the pores breathe.

4.Don’t squeeze or pinch the pimples as the membrane gets ruptured and causes the sebum and bacteria spread.

5.Don’t wash your face more than twice because the more we wash the sebaceous glands become more active and produce more sebum.

Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Pulkit Nandwani. I'm a gynecologist and a laparoscopic surgeon practicing in Rohini Delhi. Today I want to share some information with you about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

What is polycystic ovaries?

These days polycystic ovary syndrome is becoming extremely common. It is increasing in incidence. Nowadays every 2 in 10 women will be having this syndrome. Polycystic ovaries are nothing but ovaries slightly larger in size than the normal looking ovaries. The small cysts form in these ovaries which cause some hormonal disturbances. So having a diagnosis of polycystic ovaries on ultrasound does not mean that you have polycystic ovary in ovarian syndrome. Polycystic ovarian syndrome occurs only when a patient is experiencing symptoms along with an ultrasound diagnosis of polycystic ovaries.

Now what can be the symptoms that occur in polycystic ovarian syndrome?

The symptoms are usually due to the hormonal changes, means that you can either have irregular periods, heavy bleeding or their can be on period at all, then may be increase in body hair increase in facial hair specially and loss of hair on the head. Then their can be weight gain. Patient can become overweight. It can affect the fertility difficulty in conceiving as well as oily skin acne under and also because the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Then their can also be some psychological disturbances. Your patient can experience mood swings and depression. All because of the hormonal changes or polycystic ovaries.

What are the causes of polycystic ovary syndrome?

Cause of polycystic ovarian syndrome is as such not yet known. It is just seen to run in a hereditary fashion. If your mother or elder sister experience problems of this kind you are also likely to have polycystic ovarian syndrome. Now other than these syndrome discussed earlier, you can also experience a lot of long-term consequences on health because of polycystic ovarian syndrome. These patients are more likely for having heart diseases later on in life, very high chances diabetes and blood pressure is there and even higher chances of uterine cancers, developing cancer of the lining of the uterus.

Now how can we reduce the effects of polycystic ovarian syndrome. As such there is no cure for the polycystic ovarian syndrome. We have medical treatment but better than that is to have a healthy lifestyle. Polycystic ovaries respond a lot to just having a healthy lifestyle which includes losing weight. If a patient is overweight, the first advice that we give to the patient is to lose a weight even a minimum weight loss of 3 to 5 kgs makes a drastic decrease in the even appearance of polycystic ovaries and betterment of hormones. So having a healthy lifestyle means eating lots of fruits and vegetables, cutting down on junk food. Losing weight in the form of activity having exercised makes a difference in the treatment itself. Along with that any other medical requirement is that then we have some hormonal tablets which can be started to cure the bleeding problems as well as we start them to help the patient to try to conceive. For the long term effects, just having a healthy lifestyle and having a control on weight having regular checkups with a general practitioner. Having the regular checkups of sugar to rule out diabetes or blood pressure and then annual screening for cancer can reduce the effects of polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Thank you I hope the information was useful for you.

If you have any queries regarding that you can always contact me on lybrate.

I am asking this question on behalf of my sisters. She is 25 years old. She is diagnosed with low haemoglobin level (9) in her cbc test. She completed her 3 days course of malaria also. It's been 15 days. Now she is taking iron pills. But after even a little bit exertion she gets fever which is only 99.2 or 98.8. So I want to ask is this normal with anaemic patients. Also please tell me is there any colour change in stool when taking iron pills. Please help. Also suggest does she require any other medication also. Regards.

Hi , anemic conditions generally leads to low immunity levels. The diet she follows plays a crucial role. The iron pills vary in the absorption inside the body.

Ultrasound - Why It is Important?

PGD IN ULTRAASONOGRAPHY, Non invasive cardiology course, MD - Medicine, MBBS

Ultrasound - Why It is Important?

We are mortals and changes are bound to happen in the functioning of our body and the organ's of the body with every passing day. How the body reacts to the external environment needs to be constantly studied. Therefore, It is important to keep a check of what's happening within your body and live a healthy life.

The check could be need based as suggested by doctor to diagnose a disease or for a general health! Ultrasound scan is an important diagnostic measure to check the state of the organs inside our body via sound waves. It's is also known as sonogram, diagnostic sonography and ultrasonography.

Types of Ultrasound
Although all types of ultrasound basically work the same, but there are a few differences in the below listed types of ultrasound. Doctor's conduct the test basis the need.

  1. Doppler Ultrasound
  2. Obstetric Ultrasound
  3. 3D and 4D Ultrasound
  4. Echocardiograms Carotid Ultrasound

How does it work and why it is done?
It uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of some part of the inside of the body, such as heart and blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, eyes, thyroid, and testicles.

  1. View the uterus and ovaries of a pregnant woman and assess her foetus
  2. Diagnose gallbladder disease
  3. Evaluate flow in blood vessels
  4. Assess abdominal pain or other concerns
  5. Guides a surgeon on a needle biopsy and treatment of a tumor
  6. Kidney Stones
  7. Pelvic ultrasound for ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, uterine growth and endometriosis
  8. The thyroid gland can be imaged using ultrasound looking for nodules, growths, or tumors
  9. Detect bulging of fluid from a swollen knee joint
  10. Veins evaluation to assess whether swelling in a leg is due to a blood clot, deep vein thrombosis or another cause

Why Ultrasound is preferred over other methods

  1. Generally painless and does not require needles, injections or incisions.
  2. Patients aren't exposed to ionizing radiation, making the procedure safer than diagnostic techniques, such as X-rays and CT scans. In fact, there are no known harmful effects when used as directed by your healthcare provider.
  3. Ultrasound captures images of soft tissues that don't show up well on X-rays.
  4. Ultrasound is widely accessible and less expensive than other methods.

It has some limitations, such as the sound waves do not transmit well through dense bones or parts of the body that may hold air or gas, such as the bowel and thus has a diagnostic limitation.

Allergic Rhinitis: Symptoms and Treatment

MBBS, DLO

Allergic Rhinitis: Symptoms and Treatment

Allergic Rhinitis is also known as hay fever. It can be described as an allergic reaction to substances inhaled while breathing. As the name suggests, this allergy is common during the pollen season. Apart from pollen, it can also be caused by pet dander, dust mites, and mold. This is a common condition that affects 10-30% of the world’s population. While some people may develop its symptoms within minutes, for others it could take a few hours. Common symptoms of this allergic reaction include:

It can also aggravate issues caused by nasal defects, upper respiratory infections and non-allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is usually not accompanied by fever. Also, it is not necessary for all patients to experience all the above symptoms together.

The intensity of your symptoms could vary from time to time depending on the substance you are allergic to. For example, people allergic to pollen and grass will suffer the most in spring. However, if you are allergic to pet dander and dust, your symptoms could be aggravated during winter when you spend more time indoors. Women suffering from allergic rhinitis may also see their symptoms intensify when they are pregnant. For most people, the intensity of allergic rhinitis decreases with age.

There are many forms of treatment for allergic rhinitis. Antihistamines are usually the first form of treatment attempted. This form of medication stops the body from creating histamines and thereby reduces the allergic reaction. Decongestants can also help in relieving stuffiness in the nose. For short term relief, you may also use eye drops or nasal drops. Prolonged use of these medications is not advised. Your doctor may also recommend flu shots or immunotherapy in case of severe allergies. This is a long term treatment plan that will gradually reduce your body’s reaction to the allergens.

You can also take a few simple steps at home to ease your condition. Using a humidifier indoors can help control allergies and keep the air from turning dry. If you are allergic to dust mites, limit the amount of carpeting in your house and vacuum the house regularly. When you wash your bed linen, do so in hot water. Above all, avoid exposure to allergens. If you have pets, restrict them to one part of the house. If you are allergic to pollen, avoid stepping out on windy days or when the pollen count is high.

Allergic rhinitis is not typically something to worry about. It can usually be easily managed with medication and home remedies.

Hello, Hearing is not believing. All natural foods are safe. Conception is not guaranteed by feeding practices, one has to understand that. The ovum quality is hormone dependent and not food dependent.

Hello, The menses can be delayed due to stress induced hormonal imbalances sometimes. So if your menses do not arrive by another 7 days then you may opt for a withdrawal bleed with progesterones.

Hi lybrate-user. Welcome to lybrate. Pregnancy can safely and effectively be terminated upto 9 weeks of pregnancy. Beyond that you would need to get it surgically evacuated. But these medicines should be taken under medical supervision as incorrect technique and dosage can result in severe side effects and even an incomplete abortion. Hope this information has been helpful. All the best. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you.

When all the investigation is normal and still the couple fails to conceive then it is called as sub-fertility. The best suggestion for this kind of couples are to avail our online pre-conception counseling package, only which include diet, lifestyle modification, identifying the cause of late conception and addressing.

Hello! I could not gauge from your question whether you bled after mifepristone alone or after a partial dose of misoprostol, either way complete your misoprostol as otherwise there is a possibility of retained products of conception.
