Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

I'm a 22 year old female. For the last five years, I've not been able to be successful in anything. I think I'm just lazy. But i've had suicidal tendencies and have absolutely no interest in anything anymore. I also had an incident of sexual abuse in my childhood. What do I do? Am I depressed or just plain lazy?

Five years ago you would have been 16 years when the last stage of adolescence beckoned and you would have needed to resolve any childhood issues (like this sexual abuse you talk of among others), once and for all. It appears that you have lived with that and therefore there could be important things to be taken care of soon. This could all lead to depression (anger-related) and for some reason, you have turned the anger inwards and that is propositioning the suicidal tendencies. You must, therefore, meet with a counselor soon and if that person recommends a doctor you must comply with the medication too. It is also advisable to take your parents to meet with the counselor to help identify the childhood issues and also to know about the sex abuse. You have been a victim and need not blame yourself in all this. But it is important to face all the repercussions of sharing your experiences to a professional and in front of your parents. You will find it a great relief and will immediately feel better for it.

I have stopped smoking. How can I clean my lungs, so that it does not cause problem later.
That's very good, you can see the positive impact of smoking cessation on your physical fitness will starts appearing soon after quitting. Purification of the lungs takes a very long time although your lungs may become cleaner over the time. Eat fruits, green and leafy vegetables for detox you lungs. Do some physical exercise daily like jogging, swimming, outdoor games etc. Many people feels stressed after quitting smoking so try to be relaxed, meditation is also very helpful. Always remind that if you continue smoking your lungs will only continue to be damaged. Please do not forget this point and keep up your motivation for quitting smoking. Be proud of your everyday improvement you have already achieved. Thanks.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. The condition you are troubled with is called anxiety neurosis. Anxiety neurosis treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured and you can stop the medicines if any. The process could take some time according to the depth of the problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Anyhow, there is nothing to worry. Most of the psychological problems can be cured with scientific therapy methods. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user. Welcome to lybrate. I can understand. Loosing someone near and dear is called grief and depression related to grief is pretty normal. But this sort of depression does not stay for long. This depression gets cleared within a span of some weeks. The best option for you is to consult a psychologist online for counseling and depression related therapy. Take care.

In remission persons with Bipolar disorder function perfectly well. But they are advised to continue mood stabilisers even during periods of normalcy to reduce further episodes, and overall well being. Else the long term outcome is poor, according to the guidelines of bipolar treatment. Yoga is a healthy practise but does not alter the course of bipolar illness in a positive or negative manner. All the best.

Hi There is one technique called Urge Surfing to control the urge of smoking. Urges rarely last for very long. In fact, they almost never last for longer than about 30 minutes, if there is no opportunity to use. If there is no opportunity to use then there is no internal struggle. It is this internal struggle that feeds the cravings. Trying to fight cravings is like trying to block a waterfall. We end up being inundated. With the approach of mindfulness, we step aside and watch the water (cravings, impulses & urges) just go right past. Exercise: Reflecting on Urges Ask yourself whether there have been times when you could not give in to an urge when it presented. Did the urge pass? Most of us will have had past experiences of urges passing. This is an important strategy to identify, as it can greatly improve self-efficacy for riding out urges. The main message is that urges do not have to be acted upon. The Technique of Urge Surfing: Often people try to eliminate the urges by distraction or talking themselves out of them. This usually just feeds the urges and creates the illusion that they are interminable until you give in to them. Suppressing a thought feeling or sensation, including pain ultimately increases it. Rather than trying to distract from or argue with the unpleasant thoughts, feelings or urges, mindfulness simply makes the thoughts, feelings or urges less important. If we just let an urge be – non judgmentally – without feeding it or fighting it (Fighting it is just another way of feeding it anyway) then it will crest subside and pass. Of course they come back again but over a period of time. However each time you overcome a bout of cravings they become less intense and less frequent if we don’t feed the urges and if we don’t give in to them. If we have a slip and give into the impulse we will have increased urges for a while. However we can still apply urge surfing all over again. Urge surfing Practice Watch the breath. Don’t alter it. Let the breath breathe itself. Notice your thoughts. Without judging them, feeding them or fighting them gently bring your attention back to the breath Notice the craving experience as it affects the body. Focusing on one area where the urge is being felt and noticing what is occurring. Notice quality, position, boundaries & intensity of the sensation Notice how these change with the in-breath and out-breath Repeating the focusing process with each part of the body involved. Be curious about what occurs and notice changes over time. The key is replacing the fearful wish that craving will go away with interest in our experience. When we do this we notice the cravings change, crest and subside like waves in the ocean. In this way it becomes more manageable. This is not difficult, as there are many kinds of urges like urges to scratch, to move, to eat, to drink, to go to the toilet etc. When we reflect on this as it becomes clear that all adults including those who consider they have difficult to control repetitive problem behaviours, have the capacity to have urges come and go without acting on them. After all, unless we are physically ill we can all control our need to go to the toilet! What is important is that the sensation or thought of an urge is not one solid unchanging entity. The increased level of mindful awareness of these is capable of noticing how the urge has changed dramatically. Have faith in the process to practice urge surfing successfully.
