Prickly Heat Rash - What Causes It and How to Prevent It?

The small, red itchy spots that appear on your skin during the hot summer months or after contact with hot temperatures are known as prickly heat, and cover areas of your body such as the neck, back, face, thighs and chest.

So, what causes this form of skin rash?
Prickly heat typically occurs when you sweat excessively, such as usually in a hot and humid environment. The heavy sweating along with the bacteria present on the skin and the dead skin cells causes the blocking of sweat glands. This results in the buildup of sweat underneath your skin and the characteristic bumps that you see. When these bumps burst open to release the sweat that is buildup within, it causes a prickly sensation, giving it its name.

Certain factors can also increase your chances of contracting prickly heat like:

  • Being obese or overweight
  • Sitting too close to a fire or heater
  • Being dormant due to illness
  • Wearing too much clothing

How to prevent it?
Heat rashes usually clear up on its own if the affected spot is kept clean and dry. However there are certain things that you can do to prevent it and these are:

  1. Staying away from excessive heat and humidity - Heat and humidity are the main causes of heat rash. They cause you to sweat more alongside a worsening of your rash. Sitting in a shade or keeping yourself hydrated is the best way to prevent prickly heat rash from occurring.
  2. Selecting the right clothes - Wearing cotton clothing in hot temperatures is one of the best ways to keep heat rash at bay.  Cotton being a natural fiber doesn't trap the heat, compared to nylon and polyester fabrics.
  3. Keeping the skin hydrated - Keeping your skin cool by sitting under the fan or in an air-conditioned room is another way of preventing itchy skin rash from occurring.
  4. Avoid strenuous physical activity - Keeping yourself away from the strenuous physical activity of any kind can help in preventing excessive sweating. If you have to indulge in strenuous workouts, keeping yourself hydrated is a must to avoid instances of dehydration.

Since you have already tried so many things- there must be a medical reason to it. Only hair oil and shampoos will never help you. You need to nourish your hair internally too. Eat nutritious foods like almonds, walnuts, green leafy veg, pulses, paneer, curd.

Dandruff may be due to various causes other than fungal infection like Vitamin and mineral deficiency, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, Hormones imbalances and many other causes. For correct diagnosis and treatment, send me more information (including pictures of affected areas) about your health and illness. Avoid all sorts of soaps, shampoo and detergent chemicals, Use nothing too hot in winter and use nothing too chilled in summer. Avoid Junk food, spicy pungent highly seasoned food. Have a head wash with Amla & Reetha Water {put some whole dried Amla (Indian gooseberry) & whole dried Reetha (the soap nut) in bowl of lukewarm water in evening and use its liquid to wash head in morning} If you have good faith in Homeopathy you can apply homeopathic medicines in the scalp. Internally you can also take - Cantharis 30 & Natrum M 30 Under supervision of qualified homeopathic consultant only.

For fair skin there are many creams in the market. Few of them can be harmful. Its better to avoid them. Apply sunscreen regularly & moisturizer on face at night will help you.

5 years ago (age 23) my hair was very healthy and rich. About 2 years ago it started loosing strength and richness and started growing white hairs. Is this because of nutrition problem or anything else? One more thing I noticed when water quality for hair washing changes it directly affects hairfall. Waht is your opinion about washing hair in purified water or mineral water?

You should use RO water to wash your hair if there is unavailability of soft water in your area. Nutritional affects a great deal on your hair. 1.Use mild shampoo to wash hair (you can make your own shampoo using reetha and shikakai at home) 2.Stop using conditioners. Use natural conditioners like Egg, Yougurt and Lemon. 3.Rub your scalp with the juice of white onion. 4.Use amla (gooseberry) juice on scalp and also to drink. 5.Use a paste of bhringraj on hair. 6.You can use some good hair packs like - fenugreek and yogurt, egg and green tea. 7.You can rinse your hair with organic apple cider vinegar after washing your hair to maintain ph balance of your hair. 8.Mix curry leaves with coconut oil and heat up and let it cool. Wheat Germ oil to massage your head at night. You can also put some fenugreek powder in the oil, heat the oil a bit and apply it on scalp for hairfall, whitening and dandruff. 9.Apply hair packs like Egg with Yogurt, Banana. 10.Have lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits rich in Vitamin C. 11.Protein is the most important element for maintaining hair health. Make sure your diet in protein rich sources like eggs, fish, chicken, soyabean, sprouts, pulses and grains 12.Zinc, iron & copper promote healthy hair. Some sources of this are – eggs, whole grains, all types of seeds like flaxseed, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, Dry fruits and nuts etc.

To remove your marks, there is a procedure known as microneedling radiofrequency. This procedure is done by dermatologists and cosmetologists and takes about half an hour per sitting. For best results, you should take 6 to 8 sittings of this procedure. These marks will not go by creams so do not waste your precious money on them. Directly go to any dermatologist and ask for this procedure that I just mentioned. You will get very good results. Take care.

Hello, dandruff causes hair loss so its necessary to treat dandruff first. Take thuja 200, 5 drops in the morning, once in a week. Take arnica q and cochleria arom. Q in equal amount, mix with equal amount of coconut oil, and apply this on your scalp, thrice a day. Wash your hair with b&t anti- dandruff shampoo. Home remedies are as follows:- coconut oil helps eliminate dandruff due to its antifungal properties. It also moisturises dry scalp and provides relief from itching. Take some coconut oil and mix half the amount of lemon juice in it. 1. Rub it on your scalp and massage for a few minutes. 2. Wash your hair after at least 20 minutes. 3. Follow this remedy two to three times a week.
