If you are a tobacco user or paan chewer you could be having oral submucous fibrosis. If you are not then it is mostly because of your third molar (wisdom tooth) causing trismus. Kindly get a consultation.

Common Mistakes People Do In Dental Care

BDS
Dentist, Navi Mumbai
Common Mistakes People Do In Dental Care

"Common mistakes People Do in Dental Care "

1. Regular Check-ups: Check-up is utmost important part of dental treatment , even if you do not find any usual finding in your mouth you have to  go for  annual check -ups to your Dentist. It is  mandatory to take preventive measure before hand .So ,from next time do not wait for caries pain, sensitivity develop in  your teeth ,just visit to your dentist for a general check up.

2. Follow ups: Follow up is always mandatory in between and after your treatment .Whatever is the treatment ,it is necessary to visit to a doctor if he/she mention that you have to come for follow up.Specialy after your surgery, extraction(teeth removal),Root canal etc .You find everything is done ,treatment is over and didn’t find time to visit again to your dentist ,but you have to understand this that any healing will take time and it is a normal biological process. So from next time ,don’t miss appointments and a  follow up after your treatment too.

3. Self Medication: Strict No-No .I have seen lot of people that they take medicine on their own ,without seeing a dentist /physician .See, every drug has side effects ,if you are taking for a longer time without asking to your doctor .Even if you had old prescription of a doctor ,don’t take any medicine without consulting to your Dentist/Physician. So next time ,if you find anything abnormal or find pain ,swelling  in your teeth  ,just consult your Dentist as soon as possible .

 4. Proper Tooth Brushing: For proper dental care, be sure to brush gently two or three times per day each for two to three minutes, using long, horizontally angled strokes. Waiting too long between tooth brushing can cause harmful bacteria and plaque to develop. However, do not brush too often, which can lead to exposure of the roots, or brush too aggressively, which can cause erosion of the tooth enamel.Discard your toothbrush every 3 months or else if its bristles torn out.

Not using the correct tooth brushing technique is another common dental care mistake. According to family dentistry experts, the best technique is the thorough brushing of every tooth. Thoroughly brushing the inner surfaces of the teeth is important, but many skip that step, which can cause issues to show up at the next visit to their family dentistry office.

5. A Dental Floss and a Antiseptic Mouthwash: Also a necessary additionally with the two times brushing. Food accumulates in between teeth and a major  cause too for developing dental caries in between two teeth and also it inflamed your gums  and sometimes lead to pockets and Gingival and Periodontal problems .So for a healthy teeth and gums ,use a dental floss/interdental brushes  to keep  the area clean in between teeth and gargle with the mouthwash once daily before bedtime .

6. Chomping on Tooth Destroyers: A lot of food items and beverages may cause destructions of enamel of your teeth if you are addicted to them .Don’t brush just after having an acidic beverages ,wait for some time than brush your teeth as it will cause more destruction of enamel of your teeth. Everyone has" sweet tooth "so watch your portion of sweets and candies you are taking on daily basis ,it is advisable not to have these items (choclates, chips, candies, soda, cola etc ) on daily basis .So restrict them or if not possible for children ,than give them only in one day in a week (Sundays)

7. Eat vegetables and fruits: Lots of vitamin is needed for your health of your teeth and gums  ,so make sure the green vegetables and fruits are in part of your daily diet.Drink atleast 4-5 litres water per day.

8. Any Unusual Habits like Tobacoo use: Along with all of the other health care issues caused by tobacco, smoking or using other tobacco products can also increase your chances of developing gum disease and experiencing rapid bone loss around your teeth.

9. Tooth trauma: Clenching teeth, chewing ice, or gnawing on pencils can put excess pressure on your teeth and wear away tooth enamel. If you grind your teeth unconsciously – especially at night, your dentist can create a customized mouth guard for you to wear at night. In addition, you should wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports to lessen your risk of broken or cracked teeth if you experience a severe blow to your face, and also when swimming to decrease your teeth’s exposure to chlorine, which can erode and stain tooth enamel.

10. Lack of Vitamin C: Vitamin C is important for the health of your gum tissue and should be      consumed daily. People who consume less that 180 g daily are 25% more likely to develop gum disease.

Lack of calcium – Calcium is known for its ability to strengthen bones. In fact, people who consume at least 800 mg a day are less likely to develop severe gum disease. While calcium can be found in foods like cheese, yogurt, and milk, you should still consider calcium supplements to help strengthen your teeth and bones.

I am 67 all my teeth are intact. The front teeth upper and lower are a little bit projecting. At this age is it possible to set it right. How to remove stains on the teeth? While chewing /masticating the food the side teeth touches the flesh of the mouth and gets pain. One dentist said slight chipping of the teeth so that it will not harm the sides of the mouth. Pl advise.

BDS
Dentist, Delhi
Regarding projecting teeth problem at this age the orthodontic treatment is not advisable. About your 2nd complain trimming can be done if possible and required. Try to eat at slowly and do some exercises like holding water and air in your mouth so that cheeks get stretched a little. Take care.

Dear doctor, I have a cough problem since last 10 years but its not constantly. And I am also facing mouth ulcer its hurt me too much.

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
There are so many causes of mouth ulcers like- -stress or tissue injury is thought to be the cause of simple mouth ulcers. -certain foods, including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes and strawberries), can trigger a mouth ulcer. -sometimes a sharp tooth surface also trigger mouth ulcers. -some cases of complex mouth ulcers are caused by an underlying health condition, such as an impaired immune system; nutritional problems, such as vitamin b-12, zinc, folic acid, or iron deficiency and gastrointestinal tract disease, such as coeliac disease and crohn's disease. -when you first quit smoking, you may develop more mouth ulcers than normal, but this is temporary. Usually ulcer heals by itself only within 1 week. You can take becosule capsule' once in a day for 1 week for faster recovery. Temporarily you can apply mucopain gel over ulcer for relief.

Sir mouth ulcer problem is very common for me please tell me the solution of this problem it is 2 year old problem.

MBBS, cc USG
General Physician, Gurgaon
Hello, Follow advises given below 1.Gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water 2.You can also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located 3.To prevent infection, rinse your mouth 4.Honey helps retain moisture and prevent dehydration. It also helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth Dab a little honey onto the mouth ulcer or mix in a little turmeric to make a paste that can be applied on the affected area. 5. Tulsi: Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster 6.Dry coconut, coconut oil and coconut water are three products of the coconut tree that are very useful in treating mouth ulcers. Drinking tender coconut water helps to cool the body. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain 7. you could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Consult Physician for further management as you are having this problem for long

Hi gingival hyperplasia is seen as the side effects of some medicines. It can be due to that. You can take a second opinion also to a periodontist. Gingivectomy is the surgical process done to remove excess gingival portion.

Root Canal Treatment

Master of Dental Surgery
Dentist, Gurgaon
Root Canal Treatment

The treatment to save and repair a badly infected or damaged tooth is known as Root Canal Treatment. The backbone of the procedure includes removal of the pulp which is the damaged region of the tooth, disinfecting and cleaning the pulp and finally sealing the area. The common problems that affect the pulp are a deep cavity, cracked tooth, pain or recurring dental treatment. The nerve of a tooth is not absolutely important for tooth’s functioning and health after it has emerged through the gums. Its only purpose is sensation – whether an item is hot or cold. It is not required for daily functioning.

Damage to the pulp or nerve tissue of a tooth can break it down and cause bacterial growth which in turn leads to an infection and an abscessed tooth. The abscess is a pocket that is filled with pus which is formed at the base of the roots of the tooth. Additionally, infection at the root canal can cause:

1. Loss of bone at the tip of the root.

2. Swelling that might spread to other areas of the face and body

A typical root canal treatment, which happens over a few office visits, involves the following steps:

1. X-Ray: In case you need root canal treatment, X-rays might be taken or previous X-rays could be checked in order to locate the area of decay.

2. Anaesthesia: Administration of local anaesthesia is administered to the infected tooth.

3. Pulpectomy: The diseased tooth is removed by making an opening at the area.

4. Filling: The opened roots are filled using gutta-percha material and sealed off using cement.

Hi Doctor I have a pale yellow teeth however I brush it never turns white.Sometime I even have bad breath

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Colour of the teeth can be lightened by a process known as tooth bleaching which is normally preceeded by a scaling and oral prophylaxis (gum & tooth cleaning. Bad breath could be as a result of deposotions on the gums and sometimes also because of a coated toungue. Scaling should take care of the problem alongwith use of mouthwash and gum paint if required.

- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser.

Our teeth perform the primary function of breaking down the food particles for further intake. So, healthy teeth equals to a healthy body. Visit a dentist every once in a while to keep your primary organs healthy.

I have geographic tongue and fissures which makes me uncomfortable for past 6 years. Is there any remedy to that. Even tired zinc and vitamin tables. No use.

BDS, Master of Hospital Administration
Dentist, Patna
Geographic tongue and fissured tongue are two different conditions of tongue, but both of them are almost asymptomatic. So, there is no pain or discomfort in these conditions. If you are having any discomfort please visit a Dentist for some topical ointments or gels. But the conditions are asymptomatic. No need to worry.

Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently.
