My brother is drug addicted. He smells dendrite all days and fight with people in the roads. Suggest me what to do with him.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have to admit your brother into a rehabilitation program for at least 6 months to cure him of this addiction. If he has had mental problems too then he may require psychiatric care as well. Even after rehabilitation he must continue addiction counseling for at least three years to completely remove the physical and psychological conditioning and craving. He will be told and taught new lifestyles, schedules, habits etc. To totally recover. He must work on the oral issue, the rigid value system, the genetic factor and the script issue. Many people will not be able to resolve drug addiction in particular if they do not reach their ‘Hitting Rock Bottom’, i. E. The worst stage in their addiction to finally want to reform. Unfortunately for some unlucky few that can be death. So do be careful and do not delay seeking help now. If there are relapses, do not get too alarmed and give up. He must again persevere and fight this battle until he comes out victorious. The family members and medical fraternity must be there for him right through this recovery. He will also need to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings for a long time too after the treatment is over.

Hi doctor, my full body in heavy pain and how to save from fever and yoga. Please advise.

MBBS, MD - Community Medicine
General Physician, Jaipur
Hi doctor, my full body in heavy pain and how to save from fever and yoga. Please advise.
Hi, your body pain is due to fever you are suffering from. Fever may be simple/ self-limiting viral infection, or it may a symptom some serious illness like typhoid/ malaria/ dengue/ tb or many more like that. It is decided by symptoms provided by you, and a battery of investigations. But short term fever is most likely viral fever. Therefore, follow the advice and consult doctor with detail symptoms. 1. Take rest for 1-2 days. Wear light and cotton cloths, it helps in cooling of body. 2. Take tablet paracetamol 500 mg (as and when required; after food) for fever (more than 99 f) for 3 days. Maximum 3 tablets with gap of 8 hours can be taken in a day. 3. If fever persists, do cold sponging (with cold water even ice water if needed) to lower down temperature. 4. Drink plenty of fluids. 5. Take adequate rest and proper sleep. Going to work, working out may just make you feel worse as the extra action adds stress to your body. Inadequate sleep decreases immunity of body, which causes worsening of illness. 6. Take proper diet preferably homemade like dalia, khichdi, rice, dahl, chapatti, vegetable soups or steamed veggies. 7. This is season of dengue, therefore, if you have high grade fever, and body ache, then have platelet count from nearby laboratory.

You are suffering from side effects of tryptomer- vague pain in heart area and may be others like weight gain, nausea, mood changes, constipation etc. It is an antidepressant and you cannot wean off suddenly. Take help of doctors or kind relatives and friends, there are other ways to cope with depression minus heavy medicines and all of them carry serious side effects like suicidal thoughts. You can get routine heart check ups done, once you give up medicines to get perfect reports, if worried now, get ecg, halter & blood tested for sugar & an x ray of chest. Get back here with reports.

Yes even more sleep can cause weakness. 7-8 hrs sleep per day is enough. Physical weakness may be due to low haemoglobin. Get a blood test report. Tk proper diet, green vegetables n fibrous fruits. Avoid oily n spicy fat rich food. Do proper n regular excersise.

What are the causes and symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever and how it can be treated?

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
What are the causes and symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever and how it can be treated?
The principal symptoms of dengue are: -high fever and at least two of the following: -severe headache -severe eye pain (behind eyes) -joint pain -muscle and/or bone pain -rash -mild bleeding manifestation (nose or gum bleed, petechiae, or easy bruising) Watch for warning signs as temperature declines 3 to 5 days after symptoms/fever began, as this is the most dangerous period when platelet counts decline significantly. Report immediately to hospital if any of the following warning signs appear: -severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting -red spots or patches on the skin -bleeding from nose or gums -vomiting blood -black, tarry stools  -drowsiness or irritability -pale, cold, or clammy skin -difficulty breathing There is no specific medication for treatment of a dengue infection. -Use analgesics with acetaminophen (crocin or dolo -650 mg) and avoid those containing ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin or aspirin containing drugs. -Take rest, drink plenty of fluids like coconut water, lime water etc.to prevent dehydration. -Avoid visiting heavily populated residential areas, if possible. -Use mosquito repellents/mosquito nets when indoors.  -When outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants

I am suffering from glaucoma in right eye is it curable or cured by any surgery ?

Phaco Development Program, Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology, DNB Ophtalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Mysore
There is no cure for glaucoma. Vision lost from the disease cannot be restored. Immediate treatment for early-stage, open-angle glaucoma can delay progression of the disease. That's why early diagnosis is very important. Glaucoma treatments include medicines, laser trabeculoplasty, conventional surgery, or a combination of any of these. While these treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve sight already lost from glaucoma. If you are being treated for glaucoma, be sure to take your glaucoma medicine every day. See your eye care professional regularly.
