Lumbar Canal Stenosis - What Causes It?

Lumbar Canal Stenosis - What Causes It?

Spinal stenosis is a condition where a part of the spinal column becomes narrow. There are generally two types of spinal stenosis- lumbar stenosis and cervical stenosis. Lumbar stenosis is the form of the condition that affects the lower back. It is also the most common type of spinal stenosis.

Common Causes of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Some people may be born with a narrow spinal canal, but in most cases the condition is caused post birth. Here is a look at some of the most common causes for the spinal stenosis.

  1. Overgrowth of bone- Osteoarthritis can sometimes cause bone spur formation, which in turn can lead to the stenosis at the lumbar region of the spine. This usually occurs in adults, as osteoarthritis is common after a certain age.
  2. Herniated discs- A soft cartilage exists between the vertebrae, which cushions any impact on them. However, this cartilage dries up over time, and with age may lead to formation of crack on the exterior, which in turn causes suppression of the inner soft material and nerves of the spine.
  3. Stiffened ligaments- The ligaments in the spine may become thick and stiffened over time and age. Due to the thickness of the ligaments, a bulge may occur in the spinal column and lead to lumbar spinal stenosis.
  4. Injuries to the spine- Lumbar spinal stenosis may often be brought on by an injury to the spine. A spinal fracture resulting from an accident may narrow down the spine, which can cause the issue.
  5. Tumours- A tumour may affectumbar Canal Stenosis anyone at any point of time. These tumours may occur between the spinal cord and the vertebrae or between two bones in the vertebrae.

Symptoms of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Often the spinal stenosis may lie dormant and not produce any noticeable symptoms. However, it can still be diagnosed using an MRI or CT scan. However, all forms of the condition gradually progress and produce severe symptoms. This is why the treatment should be started as soon as the lumbar spinal stenosis is diagnosed, for the best result.

Here are common symptoms associated with the disorder

  • Numbness and tingling in the leg and foot.
  • Pain in the back
  • Leg cramps after long spells of standing or walking.
  • Weakness in the legs and feet.

If you observe any of the symptoms mentioned above, make sure that you visit an orthopaedist, so that the condition can be diagnosed and treatment can be initiated at soon as possible. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

It is possible that it is osteoarthritis considering your age and body mass index. However, the onset of pain in osteoarthritis is gradual and it progressively gets worse. You will also notice some stiffness in the morning or when resting for a long period of time which subsequently improves once you start walking. The pain in osteoarthritis is usually worse with walking for a long time and climbing stairs. That being said, it is better to confirm your diagnosis by seeing an orthopedician who can get a full history and perform an examination and other tests necessary. Appropriate treatment can be initiated afterwards.

Hi = relax and stay positive. = increase fluid intake. = eat seasonal fruits for natural vitamins = do stretching of hamstring, quadriceps, and calf muscles. = if you are overweight, reduce weight by cycling or swimming as it gives low impact on joints. = do check your calcium and vit. D = apply moist heat pad to affected joint and muscles. If still you don't get relief see a physiotherapist as there are various causes for leg/ joint pain and some test may be required for further investigation. Best wishes.

Hello Lybrate user, If wearing of sports shoes is not of any issue at your working place than I would suggest to wear a good pair of sports shoes instead of formal shoes. That will help you immediately and will see the difference. Secondly, do calf and plantar fascia stretches regularly first when you gets up from bed in morning and in between during prolong stand &walk. Do some contrast bath, release a fascia structure at your using a tennis ball .this will definitely help you. If you find any difficulty to understand the process which I mentioned above. Kindly do visit a physiotherapist near by you he will explain all the protocols. Thanks& Regards.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).
