To detect the cause of your problem you need to do some blood tests and ultrasound of pelvis. After which you may need medicines if any report is abnormal. But you should first test urine for pregnancy if there is such chance.

It cannot be used as a regular contraceptive method and is quite unhealthy if taken more than twice a month. 3. The pill is to be taken soon after unprotected sex. It should be taken preferably within 24 hours and before 72 hours or else the pill may turn useless. At just an inch long, your baby still weighs around three grams, about the same as during the eighth week of pregnancy. Most of your baby's physical features are in place, such as the head, legs, and arms. The head is the largest of the extremities. During the ninth week your baby begins to put on weight. Up to 9 weeks of pregnancy On the first appointment you will be given medication (tablet) called mifepristone. This prevents hormones from preparing the lining of your womb to receive the fertilised egg. In other words, it stops hormones for allowing your pregnancy to continue. Once you have taken this tablet you are free to go home and continue with your normal activities. You then return to the hospital or clinic 48 hours later to receive the second form of medication (another tablet). This is called prostaglandin which causes uterine contractions and vaginal bleeding. The lining of the womb breaks down within 6 hours of taking prostaglandin which is then expelled from the vagina along with the foetus. This bleeding is accompanied by cramps and is very similar to a very heavy period. This is a painful stage of the procedure although taking a painkiller can help. But bear in mind that there can be side effects with these which include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Fillers: How to prepare for your appointment ..tips and warnings

MD - Skin,VD & Lepxsy
Dermatologist, Hyderabad
Fillers: How to prepare for your appointment ..tips and warnings
Source: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) www.aad.org
Fillers are popular. To help you decide whether this treatment is right for you and to have the treatment performed safely, the AAD provides the following facts.

Warning
If you decide that fillers are right for you, it is important to know that injecting a filler is a medical procedure.

Having a filler injected in a non-medical setting can be extremely dangerous. To protect your health, you should never get a filler injected at a:

Non-medical spa.
Party.
Salon.
Someone’s home.

The AAD recommends that you see a doctor who has expertise injecting fillers and many satisfied patients. The results you see depend largely on the experience of the person performing this procedure. A dermatologist has the knowledge and experience required to inject fillers safely and effectively.
What happens when I get a filler?

The procedure varies with the filler your dermatologist will use, the part of the body to be treated, and your medical history. Here are some general guidelines about what you can expect:

Most filler treatments take between 15 and 30 minutes and require one office visit.
Before getting the injections, you may need ice, an anesthetic applied to the skin, or a nerve block (an injection). This varies with the filler and area to be treated. Hands generally do not need anesthesia; lips often require a nerve block.
Your dermatologist will inject the filler into the area, often giving you several injections to produce the best results.
You may feel a stinging or burning sensation as the filler is injected.
A few fillers require allergy testing to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction.
If you need allergy testing, you must wait for the results from the allergy test before you can get the filler.
If your own fat will be used as a filler, the entire treatment can often be completed in one day. You will first have a procedure called tumescent liposuction, which safely removes a small amount of fat from another area of your body. The fat removed from your body is then processed so that it can be injected into the area that needs more fullness.

[pagebreak]
What must I do after getting a filler?

Most patients can return to their everyday activities after leaving the office.

To reduce any redness and swelling from the injections, your dermatologist may recommend icing the area for 15 to 20 minutes before you leave.

Before you leave the office, you should be able to apply makeup.

After leaving the office, you should:

Wait until the next day to exercise or do any other strenuous activity.
Stay out of the sun and do not use a tanning bed or other type of indoor tanning.
Avoid touching the treated area for three days, unless you receive instructions to massage the area.
One filler, poly-L-lactic acid, requires you to gently massage the treated area for about 5 minutes several times a day for 1 to 2 weeks. Your dermatologist will tell you if you need to massage the area.

Is there downtime?
This varies with the filler. Most fillers do not cause downtime. Be sure to ask your dermatologist whether you will have downtime.

[pagebreak]
When will I see results after getting a filler?

This also varies with the filler. Most fillers fill the skin, so they produce immediate — or close to immediate — results. A filler also can stimulate your body to produce collagen, but this takes time.
Most fillers offer immediate results

Filler When see results
Collagen Immediate
Hyaluronic acid gel Immediate
Calcium hydroxyl apatite Immediate
Poly-L-lactic acid 2 or 3 weeks
Fat taken from your body Immediate
PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) Immediate

You may see other fillers advertised. All fillers listed above have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), except for self-donated fat. This filler does not require FDA approval because it comes from your own body.
Will I look natural?

To get natural-looking results, the person injecting the filler must have expertise in placing the filler.

Dermatologists recommend not overdoing fillers. Your results will look more natural with a conservative approach. For example, patients who have very thin lips should not get dramatically fuller lips. Creating fuller lips in these patients could be extremely unflattering because the lips might start to resemble a duck’s bill.
How long will the results from fillers last?

Most fillers offer temporary results and require repeat treatments to maintain the results.

Temporary fillers offer one key advantage. These can be injected as needed to replace lost fullness. This is advantageous because no matter what we do, our skin continues to age.
How long fillers typically last

Filler How long it lasts
Collagen 2 to 3 months (often longer when treating scar)
Hyaluronic acid gel 4 to 12 months
Calcium hydroxylapatite 6 months to 1 year
Poly-L-lactic acid 1 to 3 years
Fat taken from your body 1 to 3 years (often longer when treating a scar)
PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) permanent

You should ask your dermatologist how long the recommended filler should last in the area you want treated.
When is it safe to get another treatment?
If you get a temporary filler, you can usually have another treatment when the signs of aging reappear.

What are the possible side effects?

After receiving filler injections, some patients have minor, temporary side effects where they were injected. You may have:

Redness
Swelling
Tenderness
Bruising (occasionally)

These side effects tend to clear within 7 to 14 days — if not earlier.

Serious side effects are more likely when the person injecting the filler does not have adequate medical training and experience. To protect your health, you should never get filler injections in a non-medical setting, such as non-medical spa, salon, or someone’s home.

When fillers are injected in a non-medical setting or by an inexperienced provider, reports of more serious side effects increase dramatically. These side effects include:

Lumps.
Ridges.
Over-filled areas.
Allergic reaction.
Skin discoloration.
Infection.
Severe swelling.

What is the safety record for fillers?

This is one of the safest cosmetic treatments available. For years, dermatologists have been refining the use of fillers to diminish signs of aging. Today, dermatologists safely treat people of many ages and all skin colors.

Genital Herpes - How Homeopathy Helps in Treating it?

The main symptom of genital herpes include occurrence of blisters around or near the rectum. These blisters do break eventually, but they leave behind sores that are very tender and that take about 2 to 4 weeks to heal when the eruption of blisters occurs for the first time. The subsequent outbreaks are shorter and less severe than the first outburst. The disease can spread easily through sexual intercourse and it is better to consult a doctor, even if no clear symptoms are visible. Genital herpes cause tingling sensation and a lot of uneasiness in the genital area.

Causes of genital herpes

  1. The genital herpes infection is mainly caused by 2 different types of HSVs or herpes simplex virus.
  2. The first type of herpes simplex virus most commonly infect the lips and they cause cold sores, which are recognized as fever blisters.
  3. The first type of HSV type 1 virus can also produce sores in the genital area. The usual cause of genital herpes is the HSV type 2 and that can infect the mouth.
  4. Genital herpes can be simply transmitted from one individual to another during sex. The symptoms of herpes can be produced on and off in some people as it remains in the nerve cells of the body.

Symptoms of genital herpes

  1. Burning or itchy feeling in the genital area that lasts for more than 2-3 weeks.
  2. Pain is experienced in the genital area, legs and buttocks.
  3. Fluid is discharged from the Vagina, and pressure is experienced in the abdomen.
  4. The sores appear after few days on regions where the virus has entered like penis, vagina or the mouth.
  5. The other general symptoms that can occur under this condition are headache, fever, muscle aches and difficulty in urination.
  6. The glands around the groin area also get swollen at times.

Homeopathic medicines are safe
It is a contagious disease and use of homeopathic remedies is very effective in treating herpes. Remarkable results can be gained by taking homeopathic medicines, and these are extremely safe. There are no side effects caused by taking homeopathic medications, and are of great use in eradicating the condition from the root. The intensity of the genital herpes condition takes a long time to wither and use of homeopathic medicine though provides slow results is very effective and harmless. The best homeopathic medication that can be taken to treat genital herpes is Natrum Mur for both men and women.

Do You Know Excessive Hair Growth in Women is Hirsutism

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Do You Know Excessive Hair Growth in Women is Hirsutism

There are women who feel their looks are spoilt because of the presence of excessive body hair. While hair on women's body is common, excessive body hair isn't a normal condition and must be taken seriously. Women are generally unaware that the condition is known as Hirsutism.

What is Hirsutism?

Hirsutism can be defined as growth of excessive facial and body hair in women. With the world obsessed with flawless skin, such changes from feminine hair pattern (soft, fine, vellus hair) to masculine hair pattern (hard, dark, terminal hair) in a woman is generally unwelcoming and, hence, very distressing for the woman.

Why do some women develop Hirsutism?

In order to understand the reasons for such excessive growth in some women, it is important to understand the differences in the physiology of men and women. The male or female appearance of one's body is dependent on a delicate balance between male and female sex hormones. There is a predominance of the hormone estrogen in a woman's body, whereas androgens (testosterone) are the predominant sex hormones among men. However, some amount of androgens is secreted by the ovaries and adrenal glands (located next to kidneys) in women also. But, an excessive production of these hormones results in Hirsutism. Hormonal imbalance is by far the most common cause of Hirsutism.

Causes of Hirsutism

The common causes of hirsutism include:

1. Endocrine causes

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) - PCOS is a condition of hormonal imbalance in the body, which can result in an irregular menstrual cycle, enlarged ovaries with a cystic appearance on USG, infertility, obesity and hirsutism. For more information on the causes and management of PCOS.
  • Cushing's syndrome - Excessive production of hormone Cortisol by the adrenal glands can lead to symptoms such as high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, skin discoloration, muscle weakness, irregular menstruation, and hirsutism etc. This syndrome is known as Cushing's syndrome.
  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) - CAH is a condition of excessive production of hormones Androgens and Cortisol by the adrenal glands and generally manifests in childhood in the form of virilization. In such cases, CAH can present with symptoms such as ambiguous genitals, obesity, hypertension etc. However, sometimes the manifestation of CAH is deferred to early adulthood and results in milder symptoms, hirsutism being one of them.

2. Tumors - Tumors in ovary or adrenal glands can again cause hirsutism due to excessive production of androgens

3. Medications

  • Long term steroid consumption (commonly used for immunosuppression, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis)
  • Performance enhancing drugs (often used by athletes)

4. Idiopathic - the woman may be having hirsutism despite normal hormone levels

Treatments

There are essentially two lines of treatment for hirsutism - one is medical management and the other is a cosmetic treatment.

Medical treatments for hirsutism -

A. Birth control pills - It's possible to reduce the severity and intensity of hair growth using birth control pills- the most commonly prescribed medical intervention! The birth control pills help by decreasing the production of androgens by ovaries. Besides this, estrogen present in the pills also helps the liver to produce more of sex hormone binding protein- these proteins bind to circulating androgens, thereby reducing their action on the body. Both these actions help in reducing the growth of hair on the body.

B. Anti-androgen medications - There are three categories of anti-androgen medications, which are commonly used for the treatment of hirsutism.

  • I. Spironolactone - Spironolactone is a diuretic medicine, which blocks the effects of androgens on the hair follicles, thus controlling hair growth.
  • II. Finasteride - Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of body testosterone into its more potent chemical entity, thereby limiting the effect of testosterone on hair growth.
  • III. Flutamide - Flutamide is a potent anti-androgen, which blocks the actions of androgens and helps in controlling the hair growth.

However, we have to ensure that the woman is not pregnant when taking any of these three medications. These medicines are often combined with oral contraceptives, which also have a synergistic effect in reducing the severity of hirsutism. One should also seek an expert opinion before starting these medications as there can be serious side effects, especially on liver.

C. Steroids - Low dose dexamethasone can be used to control the overactive adrenal glands when used carefully. However, long-term steroid therapy has got its own side effects and this therapy should only be considered under expert care and guidance.

D. Insulin sensitizing medicines - Medicines such as Metformin and Pioglitazone (Basically these are anti-diabetic medications) help in reducing insulin resistance in the body, which, in turn, helps in controlling the effects of excessive circulating androgens.

Cosmetic treatment for hirsutism -

One very important aspect of cosmetic management of hirsutism is self-care. This can include shaving, waxing, use of depilators and bleaching creams. All these measures help to reduce the amount of visible hair in undesired parts of the body. But, this needs to be done very frequently for a sustained visible effect.

Permanent hair removal is also possible using electrolysis or LASER treatment. In electrolysis treatment, electric current is passed into the hair follicle using a needle, which damages the root of the hair permanently. Similarly, LASER treatment uses LASER to destroy the hair follicle. Both these are effective methods to get rid of the undesired hair. However, we do not yet know if there are any long-term complications or side effects of these methods and these methods are not yet approved by the US FDA.

Unwanted 72 can cause irregular bleeding before the next period is due. It can delay the next period also. But the quantity of bleeding is usually less and last 4-5 days, and the period of delay is not more than 15 days. To know if she is pregnant, you may go for urine pregnancy test 7 days after she misses next period. And if negative, repeat it after another 7 days.
