Causes of Swimmer's Ear

MBBS, MS - ENT ( Gold Medalist Honors )
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
Causes of Swimmer's Ear

Swimmer's ear is a medical condition, which involves inflammation, irritation or infection of the ear. It may affect the outer ear and also the ear canal. Swimmer's ear is called Otitis externa in medical terms. The condition may be acute to chronic in nature.

Causes: Swimmer's ear is an infection that's usually caused by bacteria commonly found in water and soil. Infections caused by a fungus or a virus are less common. This condition is more common in teenagers and young adults. It may occur due to a middle ear infection or because of a respiratory infection such as cold.
Swimmer's ear can occur as a result of swimming in unclean or contaminated water. These waters contain pseudomonas and other harmful bacteria, which can lead to such ear infections. The infections are rarely caused by fungus.

Swimmer's ear may also result due to other reasons. They can be:

  1. Scratching the inside or outside of the ear.
  2. Having something stuck in the ear. When you clean ear wax with cotton swabs or small objects, damage may occur. Using headphone or ear plugs for a long period of time may also cause swimmer's ear.
  3. Allergic reaction to some object or anything placed in the ear may also cause Swimmer's ear. These may be hair products or jewelry.
  4. Some chronic skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis may also lead to this infection.

Risk factors:
There are several factors, which may enhance the risk of getting swimmer's ear. They are as follows:

  1. Swimming in water, which has got elevated levels of bacteria. This includes lakes and ponds.
  2. People having narrow ear canals are at a more risk of swimmer's ear.
  3. Aggressive cleaning and scratching of the ear canal.

Symptoms:
The symptoms which indicate swimmer's ear are:

  1. Itching of the ear canal. This becomes intense as the condition progresses.
  2. Redness on the inside parts of the ear, which get more extensive in later stages.
  3. Discomfort which worsens by pulling on the outer ear or pushing on the tragus of the front part of the ear.
  4. Drainage of a fluid which is clear and odorless. As the condition worsens, there is excessive drainage of fluid along with the discharge of pus.
  5. A fullness feeling in the ear and a partial blockage of the ear canal because of swelling and fluids.
  6. In advanced stages, fever and swelling of lymph nodes in the neck is indicated. Hearing impairment may occur.

Swimmer's ear is a health condition, which involves the ear. The ear gets inflamed because of a certain bacterial infection. Although it is not a very severe condition, in some cases it can do significant harm.

Dea rfollow the remedies for 1 month and avoid A/C till then..: 1.Boil 1 to 2 liters of water and add a few drops of clove oil (or a large spoonful of cloves), 10-12 crushed mint leaves, and a few drops of eucalyptus oil (or 1/3 cup of eucalyptus leaves). Inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes. Continue this twice a day until congestion clears and then once a week to clear the phlegm that gets deposited in the sinuses. 2.Have 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger juice with 1 teaspoon of honey in it twice a day. 3.Do pranayam daily for 30 min. 4. Take warm water plain, or prepare it with cinnamon and black pepper. 5.Avoid cold, heavy, oily foods, cold drinks, chocolates, ice cream, cold water, etc. 6. Sleep while lying on one side and with a pillow beneath the head. This prevents the accumulation of mucus in the air passages and helps to avoid difficulties in breathing. 7. Revert back after 10 days for further management and medication.

Hi sir I am manor firm chandigarh I am 28 years old sir actually I am suffering from tonsils problems since 2 years can you tell me how can I treat it and operation is successful ya not.

MBBS, MS - ENT, DNB
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
If you r having recurrent infections in tonsils characterised by sore throat, fever n require antibiotic treatment, you should definetly go for tonsillectomy. But if you r having occasional sore throat you can opt for conservative treatment like maintaining oral hygiene, avoiding junk food, sudden change of temperature and maybe some antiallergic and immunity boosting medications for which you can consult your local ent specialist.

I been suffering from nasal polyps and sinusitis for years. Is there anyways I could get rid of this.

DAA, DNB
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
Hi. I understand your concerns. Sinusitis can also be due to allergy. Consult a pulmonologist /allergist for the same. You will benefit from intranasal corticosteroids and anti allergy medicines. Also try steam inhalation and saline nasal douche Thanks.

Dear Lybrate I have a problem after shivering in my ear get high volume sounds then its paining and something liquid ...
This appears like Ear drum perforation as a result of cold and middle ear infection. Ear must be kept dry with no liquid entry of any type. Wipe outside with cotton buds. You require aggressive treatment of nose congestion, cold and chronic infection. Once dry Ear drum reconstruction surgery may be considered. See ENT Specialist for the management.

Is Septoplasty the only way to correct deviated nasal septum. What is the cost involved. Thanks in advance.

MBBS, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO)
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Is Septoplasty the only way to correct deviated nasal septum. What is the cost involved. Thanks in advance.
Yes, but the term is very ambiguous as there are many small steps with varied surgical techniques that are included in the term Septoplasty. Modern techniques have made packless endoscopic surgery with new age tools like LASERs, Microdebriders, Coblation Wands have transformed Septoplasty from a horribly painful surgery into a minimally invasive short-stay surgery that allows you to breathe nasally as soon as you regain consciousness in the recovery room! Costs differ depending upon the technologies employed, Implants/packs/splints used, surgical technique and popularity and expertise of the surgeon involved, type of ward opted for, type of hospital, town/city where surgery is done. My patients usually spend about ₹1,00,000 all inclusive, as a daycare admission in an average hospital in Bengaluru. At a corporate hospital, in a Royal Suite, the same surgery could cost you triple the amount easily! In any small town in Karnataka, in a small Nursing Home, you could get Septoplasty done for ₹25,000 too. But remember, you pay peanuts, you will only get monkeys! Select an ENT Surgeon carefully. There are many sites which have comprehensive listings of ENT Surgeons with previous patient feedbacks. Read them carefully, before you select the right surgeon for you.

MS , MBBS

Hi the ear canal is a tortuous one and therefore it is unlikely that you would have injured your drum. You will have to take antibiotics and analgesics for the trauma caused to the canal.

Dear lybrate user, first of all know whats the exact status, then the management will be much easier and fruitful by default. Go for puretone audiometry test. If you have a mixed kind of hearing loss then even after surgery you have to use hearing aids, if the result shows conductive type loss then no doubt you will be fine after surgery.

Sinusitis is an inflammation, or swelling, of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, sinuses are filled with air. But when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) can grow and cause an infection. Conditions that can cause sinus blockage include the common cold, allergic rhinitis (swelling of the lining of the nose), nasal polyps (small growths in that lining), or a deviated septum (a shift in the nasal cavity). Homoeopathic constitutional treatment will give you permanent cure , without any side effects.
