You asked: I am 18 year old, female. I have been suffering from stammering since childhood and normally with my family and other people I speak normally and hardly stutter but in public places when I am in situation such as in interviews, presentation etc I am hardly able to speak and sometimes the situation gets worse as I make faces while speaking and my stomach also squeezes. Go out of breath. So recently I was thinking to join a public speaking course or should I see speech therapist but I am confused as will it help me to improve?

Hi Tanya, Thanks for writing in. Welcome to the forum. From what you are saying, there appears to be a very strong component of social anxiety. This can be handled with psychotherapy, medicines or both depending upon the exacts nature and severity of the symptoms. Public speaking courses and speech therapy are also likely to help with respect to the specific issue of stammering in public places. But with regard to the several other aspects of this problem, speaking to a mental health expert is a good idea. Take care!

Consult the speech therapist & take speech therapy continues apply all techniques or practice at home like reduce your speech of rate whenever speaking someone, take a small breath to start the words, do relaxation exercises. I hope after speech therapy solved your problem.

Dear lybrate-user. Don't worry. Your voice will change. Usually it changes when you enter the adolescent period. But it could take even some more years. See upto the age of 18. If no change, then approach a speech therapist. Take care.

Stammering can be by muscle tightening or visible difficulty speaking which causes anxiety, fear, or loss of self-esteem. Some of the strategies you can use- 1-Speak slowly and simply. Try saying one syllable words, one at a time. Strive to have each word come out clearly before moving on to the next word. 2-Monitor your speech as you talk, looking for which words or mental states might cause stuttering to occur or worsen. 3-Don't be afraid to leave pauses or silence in your speech. Go at your own pace as you practice. 4-Practice words that you notice as problematic. 5-Gradually increase the length of words and sentences. Overtime you will work towards implementing problematic words in your speech. Consult SLP.

Im a singer! Pls tell about tips and exercise for our vocal chord! What is the good way for better voice quality sound?

Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

I am still suffering from speech problem mainly when I speak fast and also feel stress, after I had my tongue tie surgery 2 years ago ,so what should I do to improve my speech.

Sir/Mam, I am a 19 year old Male with hypothyroidism issue. I am taking T4 medication (Thyronorm) for last 2 years. My main concern is that my voice is not developed sounds thick and hoarse. My voice never cracked. My body look under developed. My shoulders and chest do not look broad and I have a lot of fat deposits on my abdominal area and chest (looks like gynecomastia). I don't like to be socialised because of my problem. I have some speech issues and feel pressure in head all time. Have some memory loss problem means can't recollect words to speak and write. Feels really awkward and frustrating all time. And I always feels like something is blocking my back of head. My lips looks dark and chappy for no reasons (I never smoked). Please help.
