Colour Blindness - Understanding Everything About It!

Colour blindness is not a type of blindness at all; it is an insufficiency in the way some people see colour. Once afflicted by this vision problem, people face difficulty in distinguishing specific colours like red, green, blue or yellow. So to call it colour vision deficiency would be much appropriate, and it hits men more often than women. In a report by Prevent Blindness America, it is revealed that about 8% of males and less than 1% of females are affected with colour vision problems. Generally, red and green colour deficiency is the most commonly found. In very rare instances, a person may carry a trait which lessens his ability to distinguish between blue and yellow colours. This blue-yellow hue insufficiency normally is found in men and women equally.

Understanding signs and symptoms: Do you have any difficulty in seeing yellow, green or red colours? Do people often tell you that you are seeing the wrong colour? If so, then these are key signs that you are affected with a colour perception deficiency. Quite opposite to popular belief, hardly a colour blind person is able to see only the shades of gray. Most people who are deemed as colour blind are able to see shades but cannot distinguish between one colour and another and get easily confused with other shades, depending on the kind of colour blindness they are affected with. If you have suddenly developed a colour vision deficiency when you were able to view and distinguish all the shades previously, then you should visit an ophthalmologist without further delay.

Causes behind colour blindness: Colour blindness takes place when the light-sensitive cells within the retina stop responding accurately to variations in wavelengths of light.

Photoreceptors present in the retina are termed as rods and cones. Rods are present abundantly, and about 100 million rod cells are present in human retina and these cells are very sensitive to light, but rods are impervious to sunlight and therefore, are incapable of perceiving colours. The cones, on the other hand, are responsible for our understanding of different colours. There are three types of cones, each of which is responsible for perceiving red, green and blue light. The three cones work together to help us see the whole range of colours. People who are colour blind usually have faults in a particular cone cell, which makes them unable to distinguish that particular shade.

Combatting colour blindness: Gene therapies are reported to cure colour blindness in monkeys, as per the reports of a study conducted by researchers of the University of Washington and Florida in September 2009. While early methods appear promising, gene therapy is not considered effective for human beings unless the treatments are verified to be safe.

Hence there is no effective means of curing colour blindness, but there are some strategies that may aid you to function better. However, if you are into graphic designing or anything that requires handling of different colours, then you will need professional help. The sooner you become aware of your insufficiency, the better you can compensate for it.

Some people also use contact lenses or eyeglasses that act as filters to enhance colour perception. 10 Ways To Keep Your Eyes Healthy As You Age!

If health is lost, everything is lost and your eyes are one of the most essential parts of your health. Good eyesight is the key to a happy life. But in order to maintain good eyesight, it is important to keep a few things in mind. However, aging causes several disorders related to eyes.

Here’s what you should do to continue life till the fullest with healthy eyes even in your sixties:

  1. Check your diet: For healthy eyes, you should take care of your diet first. Include foods rich in vitamins A and C, such as green leafy vegetables and fish in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are also necessary for good vision as they improve the health of Macula, which is responsible for central vision. Alcohol and unsaturated fats are harmful for the macula. High-fat levels in the body obstruct proper flow of blood through arteries. Thus, eyes also suffer due to low oxygen supply.

  2. Quit smoking at the earliest: Smoking poses great threat to your eyes. It increases the level of oxidative stress. This is harmful for the eyes.

  3. Exercise: Regular exercise improves the blood circulation in our body. Thus, sufficient blood reaches the eyes which further aids sufficient supply of oxygen.

  4. Use sunglasses: Protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. Wear sunglasses when you are travelling outdoors as UV rays are extremely y harmful for the eyes.

  5. Don’t overstrain your eyes: Avoid sitting in front of the television and computer for too long. Keep the computer below the eye level. Keep the screen at a distance. Remember to blink frequently and keep the colour format not too bright or saturated.

  6. Rinse your eyes: Wash and rinse your eyes regularly with cold water to get rid of dust particles.

  7. Be alert: In case of any injury related to the eye, seek immediate medical help. Don’t ignore the injury.

  8. Visit your doctor: It is important to get your eyes checked by a professional at least once in every two years. The doctor should watch and examine your pupil by dilating it. He must assess the fact that whether you are vulnerable to any eye disease or not and take necessary steps.

  9. Check your spectacles or lenses: It is important that you keep the spectacles or lenses up to date. Visit your doctor to check the power of your lens. Keep a tab on the changing power.

  10. Rubbing your eyes: Avoid rubbing your eyes if any particle gets into it. You should rather splash water to keep it intact.

Hi. Start taking homoeopathic medicines which are safe to take without any side-effects - Bakson's Hite-Aid and Five Phos. - both thrice daily and Thuja 1M/ one dose once a week - take them for 1 month only. Management: Take milk and milk products which contains more calcium. More of protein (for cell multiplication) like pulses, legumes, sprouts, nuts, flaxseeds, non-veg, eggs, etc. Also, don't forget to take green vegetables, yellow veggies and fruits, seasonal fruits, salads, etc. Do skip rope daily, initially 10-20 times later gradually and slowly increase the frequency as per your capacity. Do get indulge in stretch exercises, and sports like basketball, volleyball. Last but not least, do take enough of rest and sleep (which helps in repairing of cells and cell rejuvenation). Get back to me after a month for further guidance. For eyesight: Get your eyes tested from an Opthalmologist. Include the following for getting better vision: Vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. DHA is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for eyes: Warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. Roll your eyes. Start by looking up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise. Focus. Hold a pen at arm's length, focus your eyes on it, and slowly bring the pen closer until it's about 6 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the pen, 10 times in all. Massage your temples. Using your thumb knuckles, massage your temples in small circles, 20 times in one direction and 20 in the other. Repeat the same actions above the mid-point of the eyebrows at the forehead, then below the eyes on both sides of the bridge of the nose. Take a mini-nap. Put your head back, close your eyes, and relax for 3 minutes. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing first and reducing the power of your eyes. Take Physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance. For staying active and fit: We need to make few changes in our life to stay fit and healthy (if there is no medical condition): - Just walking alone is a very beneficial exercise which can help you stay in shape, feel more energetic, and get healthy. Always take stairs rather than taking an elevator. -Standing while you work can help your body get more activity than if you were just sitting down. Spend at least some of your work day standing instead of sitting in order to help your blood flow and maintain your muscles. -Do more chores. Lots of household chores actually involve a lot of exercise and being better about doing chores can be a great way for you to fit activity and exercise into your day. -Aim to exercise for a total of 30 minutes per day and you’ll easily be able to maintain your fitness level. -Some exercises will be more efficient than others, and choosing these more efficient exercises means that the small amount of time that you do spend exercising will really count. Try to choose exercises that focus on your core muscles, since your legs and arms can get activity through daily activities like lifting bags of groceries and walking a longer distance from your car. Try squats, planks, burpees. -Get indulge into some activity at home like riding a bicycle, swimming, playing active games with your kids. -Eating right. Cut out unhealthy fats and take in healthy fats. The easiest way to identify unhealthy fats is to look for “solid” fats, or fats that are solid at room temperature. Get plenty of protein. Protein will help you maintain your muscles and also give you the energetic feeling that you may be missing now that you’re getting less exercise. Good protein sources include skinless chicken, turkey, salmon, anchovies, sardines, oysters, almonds, walnuts, peanuts and peas. Eat properly portioned, balanced meals. Generally, about ⅓ of your plate should be fruits and vegetables and ⅓ of your plate should be grains. The final third should be a mix of protein and low-fat dairy (cottage cheese, eggs, non-fat milk, etc). -Drinking enough water also has the added bonus of keeping your hunger level down, helping you to maintain the lower calorie count that you’ll be getting now that you’re not exercising as much.

CLEANING YOUR EYE:- For the first week following surgery you should protect the eye from injury. Do not rub or put pressure on the eye. Take small pieces of cotton wool and place them in a bowl containing water. Boil for 15 minutes and keep the bowl covered. Wash your hands with soap. Take a small piece of the sterilized cotton wool from the bowl. Squeeze out the excess water. Clean the discharge around the upper and lower lids without applying pressure on the eye. This is generally needed in the morning as long as the ointment is being used at bed time. Fresh cotton is to be boiled twice a day if needed. PUTTING EYE DROPS:- Never use a pin/needle to open the eye drop bottle. Screw on the cap tight to open it. Retract the lower lid and instill one drop of the prescribed eye drop into the eye. Eye drops should be used as per the prescription. Only 1 drop at a time is enough. Keep both eyes closed for atleast 10 minutes after each eye drop. PROTECTING YOUR EYES:- Put on dark glasses throughout the day for one week. Wipe tears below the margin of the dark glasses. Do not touch the eye. Do not place cotton wool between the glasses and the eye. Do not sleep on the operated side for 2 days. For the first 5 days from the time of operation, take a bath below the neck. Face and hair can be washed after 5 days. But avoid getting water inside the eye. ACTIVITIES:- Avoid strenuous activities. Do not lift any objects heavier than 10 kg for about 5 days after the surgery You may start reading and watching TV after 2 days. Take rest frequently with both eyes closed. Many people return to light work immediately after surgery, but please discuss your needs with your doctor during your post operative visit (next day). Ask your doctor about any specific activities you may have in mind as in leaving town, driving, yoga, walks, gym etc. FOLLOW UP VISITS: Please come for a post operative check up as advised upon discharge. Generally the next day, one week and one month post-op. As a routine all operated eyes should be checked once every six months even if you have no problem. If you have any further questions regarding your surgery or post operative treatment kindly speak to the Nurse who will coordinate with your doctor to answer your queries.
