Knee pain starts smoothly.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda,
Knee pain starts smoothly.
1.. Go for fasting once a week. You can go for absolute fasting or rely on a liquid diet to digest ama (toxin). Fasting should be followed by hot fomentation or by taking a bath with lukewarm water or steam bath. 2.. After fasting and fomentation, mix powdered long pepper, black pepper and dried ginger in equal quantities and take 1 teaspoon of this powdered mix with lukewarm water twice a day. This will help you restore your digestive fire. 3.. Take one tablespoon of castor oil before going to bed, once or twice a week. It helps in cleansing ama (toxin) build up and balancing vata. 4.. Mix equal quantities of powdered fenugreek seeds, turmeric and ginger powder. Take one teaspoon daily in the morning and evening. 5.. For dry fomentation of the affected joints, take a cloth and fold it into four, fill it with hot and sand make a potli (bag) out of it. Use this bundle for the fomentation of different joints. This is very helpful in reducing pain and swelling.

Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. This will relieve your problem. Press the point on the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from toe in the foot 20 times by pressing and releasing with a blunt edge of a pen. You have to take following precautions: use an ice pack to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Rest your feet by staying off of them as much as possible for a few days when your heels are aching. Exercise your feet. Some good foot flexing and stretches can help stretch out the plantar fascia, and make it feel better. Adjust your shoes with inserts that raise the heel and support the arch of your foot. Avoid walking on uneven walking surfaces.

I am having joint pain and back pain. What should I do?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist,
I am having joint pain and back pain. What should I do?
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. I also need to see your blood tests like esr, crp and serum vitamin d levels to opine on what medications can be given to you. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

I have ignored this problem since many yrs but now I want to get rid of it asap before it gets too late! kindly suggest me investigations to be done and treatment.

Have physical activity in the day like morning/evening walk. Practice yoga or breathing exercises for getting proper sleep. Donot watch tv after 7 pm and go to bed by 9.30 - 10 pm. For leg pains when ever you sit in the house, sit cross legged. That will make the calf muscles to relax avoiding the pain. Take nutritious food for getting vitamins and calcium like milk, curd, panner, cheese, green leafy vegetables. Mushroom, cabbage etc.
