dear sir/madam i am suresh from mumbai request for your need that my only sister is unable to hear due to nerves problem. She was normal at the time of birth but due to an accident she got fractured her left leg and hospitalized her about 1 month and took too much medicine for recovery her, date time she was only 5 years old.she was heard up to 13 years of her age and slowly slowly she is getting hearing problem. i consulted with the ENT doctors and they only said that she has nerves problem due to the medicines she was taken at the time of fractured and take audiography test and put hearing aid but she is only 21 years old now and study.so please tell me what to do and whom i need to consult about this.

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Delhi
She will need a detailed evaluation to determine the cause of her hearing problem. following that she will need to be on observation to look for deterioration in her hearing status. if the diagnosis of sensorineural deafness is correct she is likely to benefit from hearing aids. that should not be a problem - people move around with glasses, walking sticks, artificial knees etc - using a hearing aid is hardly considered a stigma in modern society. she will benefit greatly, will be able to hear and understand better so she will become a better student. her quality of life will be much better. for any further detail you can call up my clinic in delhi for an appointment - 011-26140058. warm regards

Hi i Am 57 years old. Slowly becoming deaf, please let know reasons for that and what is remedy for the same.

MASLP
Speech Therapist, Hyderabad
It may be senile deafness due to ageing. Generally able 50 vision and hearing diminish. If problem is interfering with social life, consult a ent specialist and get hearing test done. Hearing aid might be of great benefit if you have hearing loss beyond 40 db.

Hi Doctor, I am a 26years old girl and I belong to an orthodox family. My marriage got fixed and we started talking each other and we are in love. On day my fiance told me he had an old relationship during his college time. I told it's ok no problem, later he mentioned they had physical relationship, after hearing this I am really worried, whether to stop this wedding or move forward please suggest.

MD- PSYCHIATRIST
Psychiatrist, Jamshedpur
You should not worry about this if it is his past and he is not in touch with her anymore. Physical relationships in past is common, though lot of people do not discuss about it.

Hearing Loss - How You Can Cope With It?

Hearing Loss - How You Can Cope With It?

Hearing loss is a common sensory problem that generally develops with increasing age or due to prolonged or persistent exposure to loud noises. It is one of the most typical problems that occurs throughout the world. If you are suffering from partial hearing loss, you may find ways of keeping in touch with your family and friends. If you are not suffering from such the following may help you keep your hearing intact for years to come.

Types of hearing loss:
There are two main types of hearing loss:
1. Conductive Hearing Loss where the problem lies in the middle ear, eardrum or ossicles. A conductive hearing loss affects the passage of sound between the eardrum and the inner ear. Sound passes down the ear canal to the eardrum and through the middle ear, where the sound is transmitted across the middle ear by the three bones called the ossicles to the inner ear.

Causes of conductive hearing loss:

  1. Malformation of outer ear, ear canal, or middle ear structures
  2. Fluid in the middle ear from colds
  3. Ear infection (otitis media - an infection of the middle ear in which an accumulation of fluid may interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles
  4. Allergies
  5. Poor Eustachian tube function
  6. Perforated eardrum
  7. Benign tumors
  8. Impacted earwax
  9. Infection in the ear canal
  10. Foreign body in the ear
  11. Otosclerosis

2. Sensorineural Hearing Loss where there is damage in the inner ear, cochlea or hearing nerve. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea), or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. Most of the time, SNHL cannot be medically or surgically corrected. This is the most common type of permanent hearing loss.

Causes of sensorineural hearing loss:

  1. Exposure to loud noise
  2. Head trauma
  3. Virus or disease
  4. Autoimmune inner ear disease
  5. Hearing loss that runs in the family
  6. Aging (presbycusis)
  7. Malformation of the inner ear
  8. Meniere's Disease
  9. Otosclerosis
  10. Tumors

Coping with Hearing Loss:
Antibiotics and eardrops are often prescribed to treat hearing loss and its symptoms. In many cases, people suffering from severe hearing loss use hearing aids. Hearing aids are tiny instruments that people use in their ears to make sounds louder. People who suffer from hearing loss cope with their problems through increased concentration and focus. The usual way involves reading the moving lips of the person while they talk. Prevention is better than cure and is the best solution to avoid long-term hearing loss. Avoiding continuous loud noises, to the possible extent helps prevent hearing loss to a great extent.

Sir, it is important that you attach your reports with your complaint. Anyways, in this condition there are two ways to restore hearing. 1. Through hearing aids 2. If hearing aids do not work then cochlear implants in both the conditions, the child should undergo rigourous speech therapy from a qualified speech-language pathologist. Best of luck for your treatment, in case of any query please feel free to contact me through this portal. Thank you.

First get the proper hearing test done. Audiometry test. According to the report if its sensorineural loss then no any medicines or surgery is gonna help. Best way is to go for digital hearing aids (progmble). Cost will be different as per style quality and power of the hearing aids. You cn go for entry level hearing aids if finance is a matter of concern. It vl b arround 12000-20000 each. Share the audiometry report I cn guide you better.

Not acute but slight hearing problem. Doctor has advised to wear hearing aid. Is there any other cure?

Hi, Now a days digital hearing aids are available that will help in setting the hearing aid according to the hearing loss even if it is slight. In most cases of hearing loss the only option left is hearing aid, it is strongly recommended if it crosses mild sensorineural hearing loss or is sloping in nature. Thanks!
