What is an irregular menstrual cycle? Having an irregular cycle means that the interval between periods varies each month. That is, sometimes they come every 28 days, sometimes every 20, sometimes every 30. Having irregular periods is very common. I see them in my practice all the time. The causes can range from something insignificant to something that requires treatment. For example, if you're a teen, your body's hormones can fluctuate and take some time until they find a balance. Therefore, it?s normal to have an irregular period during adolescence or, sometimes, for your period not to arrive in a given month. But, before we get down to business, remember that the main cause for your period not to arrive is a pregnancy. So, if your period doesn?t arrive, check to make sure it?s not actually a baby on the way. Now, let?s look at the most common causes of irregular periods: ? Eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia ? Excessive weight gain or weight loss; extreme thinness and obesity both cause your menstrual cycle to become irregular or even to disappear ? Stress or emotional problems ? Hormonal problems, for example, when the thyroid malfunctions ? Travel ? Over-exercising: If you're an athlete and train very hard, you may stop menstruating because your body wants to survive and save energy and menstruation requires energy ? Problems with the pelvic organs (such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, for example) ? Drugs like birth-control pills can affect the frequency and / or intensity of menstruation ? Breastfeeding Aloe Vera Aloe vera helps treat menstrual irregularities naturally by regulating your hormones. 1. Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe leaf. 2. Mix in one teaspoon of honey. 3. Consume it daily before having your breakfast. 4. Follow this remedy for about three months. Note: Do not use this remedy during your periods.

Plz tell whether masturbation delays period. Masturbation once in two weeks delays periods. please reply.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Plz tell whether masturbation delays period. Masturbation once in two weeks delays periods. please reply.
Masturbation doesnot influence menstrual periods. So you can continue to do it. From the information you have given, at 5.6 feet height your weight is 85 kg, this is obesity. And in obese persons menstrual irregularity is common. Visit a near by gynecologist to get examined and evaluated for irregular menses. Most probably gynec will sugegst some tests like blood tests for thyroid disorders and hormone analysis and a sonography to evaluate your pelvic organs. Weight loss has been shown to normalise the internal hormonal balance and menses also regularise. So do go to gym and start diet and exercise together to achieve a good weight for your height. Take help of a dietician to plan your diet.

My wife 51years old is having multiple ovarian cysts about 30mm sizes, since 15years without pain. What should be done?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
These cyst must be a part of her pcod as her wight is also 90 kg. Primary objective of your treatment is weight reduction. This will regularize the monthly cycles and also help you get pregnant. You can take metformin to reduce weight. For reducing your weight you should have brisk walk or jogging for 4-5 km daily, high protein diet (fish, chicken, mutton without fat, pulses, mushrooms), low carbohydrate diet (avoid rice, chapatti, bread, poha, upma, idli, dosa, potato, sugar etc and can use bhakri instead) and low fat i. E. Less oil and preferably use rice bran oil. If she has already stopped her menses and still there r cysts present then she should be investigated for other causes like ovarian tumor, ca125, ct scan if needed.

Hello. Pain during menses are supposed normal, the intensity of the pain varies from person to person, sometimes it's psychological, or may be due to some nutritional deficiency or else because of underlying medical condition! You can start with homoeopathic medicines: Five Phos./ thrice a day for 1 month. During the menses, you can give her Mag. Phos. and Colocynthis 200 - both to be taken after every 2-3 hrs. till the menses lasts. Revert me back.

My friend has used Mifepristone and Misoprostol kit for her abortion of 4 weeks pregnancy as per a doctor's suggestion from a clinic. She started bleeding after using 1 Mifepristone and 2 tablets of misoprostol. She assumes that she has aborted and does not want to use remaining 2 misoprostol tablets as the cramps are more. Please suggest if she has to completely use the kit for complete abortion or is it enough as she is having bleeding now.

Trichomoniasis - How it Can Be Prevented?

MBBS, DGO, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology)
Gynaecologist, Chennai
Trichomoniasis - How it Can Be Prevented?

Trichomoniasis is an infection that is caused by a parasite and is transmitted sexually. This disorder is characterized by symptoms of itching in the genitalia, smelly discharge from the vagina and pain while urinating. This disorder may also result in premature birth in case of pregnant women.

The symptoms of this disorder are:

1. Redness around the genitals, which may cause intense itching

2. You may experience pain during sexual intercourse and urination

3. A smelly colored vaginal discharge

4. You may experience discharge from the penis

5. A burning sensation during ejaculation and urination

6. A constant feeling of irritation in the penis

Causes behind it

The disorder is caused by a parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. Certain factors increase your chances of contracting this disorder; them being:

1. Engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse

2. If you have had an episode of Trichomoniasis

3. If you have been affected by STI/STDs before

4. Having multiple sex partners can certainly augment its chances

Prevention

There are certain preventive measures that you can adopt to prevent this infection.

  1. Avoid engaging in sexual activities once the condition is diagnosed.

  2. If you are, it is always advised to use latex condoms during intercourse to decrease your chances of contracting this disease.

  3. Avoid engaging in sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners. If this disorder is not treated, then it may increase your chances of getting affected by HIV as well.

  4. It also tends to cause an early rupture of the membranes in pregnant women; resulting in premature delivery.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

As you r married since more than a year with regular sex (3-4 times a week) that is the time you should seek medical help. There r 2 basic tests which r needed in such case. Semen analysis (15 million/ml is normal count) and hsg to find out about the fallopian tube potency. If both r normal which is usually the case next treatment is with climiphene citrate for 5 days with follicular monitoring. If you want to delay the treatment then you can try calender method: If a women’s menstrual cycle varies from 26days to 31days cycle, The shortest cycle (26days) minus18days=8th day. The longest cycle (31days) minus 10days=21st day Thus, 8th to 21st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period.

PREGNANCY STRETCH MARKS

MBBS, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Delhi
PREGNANCY STRETCH MARKS

Pregnancy stretch marks

Stretch marks are narrow pink or purplish streak-like lines that can develop on the surface of the skin. They're also known as stria or striae. If you get them, they usually appear on your tummy, or sometimes on your upper thighs and breasts as your pregnancy progresses. The first sign you notice might be itchiness around an area where the skin is becoming thin and pink.

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks are very common in the general population and don't just affect pregnant women. They can happen whenever the skin is stretched. For example, when we're growing during puberty or when putting on or losing weight, but hormonal changes in pregnancy can affect your skin and make you more likely to get stretch marks.

Whether or not you get stretch marks depends on your skin type, as some people's skin is more elastic. After your baby is born, the marks should gradually fade and become less noticeable, but they won't go away completely.

Pregnancy weight gain

You are more likely to get stretch marks if your weight gain is more than average in pregnancy. Most women gain between 10kg and 12.5kg (22 and 28lb) in pregnancy, although weight gain varies a great deal from woman to woman.

Stretch marks are not harmful. They don't cause medical problems. Over time, your skin will shrink and the stretch marks will fade into white-coloured scars.

Preventing stretch marks

Some creams claim to remove stretch marks once they've appeared, but there is no reliable evidence that they work. There is also limited evidence about whether oils or creams help prevent stretch marks from appearing in the first place.

Prevent stretch marks during pregnancy to some extent-maintain a healthy lifestyle

Make your diet skin-nourishing

You've probably started eating a balanced diet to ensure that your baby gets enough nutrients and vitamins. While you are at it, incorporate foods that promote skin health and those that will improve the elasticity of your skin. This will help keep stretch marks from appearing. Incorporate these foods to your diet:

  •     Foods packed with antioxidants: as they will help protect and nourish your skin. They include vegetables and fruits
  •     Food that is rich in vitamin E: as it protects the cell membranes of your skin. Eat collard greens, broccoli, seeds and nuts.
  •     Foods rich in vitamin A: as they repair the tissues of your skin. Eat red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash and mango.
  •     Food that is rich in omega-3 and 6: as it will make your skin glow and keep the cell membranes healthy. Eat, eggs, walnuts, fish oil and fish.

Increase intake of liquids

Liquids help detoxify the body and also keep the cells of the skin plump, which in turn makes the skin healthy. Your skin will also be able to get back to normal from the stresses brought by stretch marks. Here are some liquid drinking habits you should practice:

Drinking eight glasses of water each day. If you are unable to ingest all at once, you can get a bottle of water that can carry all 8 glasses of water and drink the water in bits throughout the day.

Do low impact exercises

Exercise helps to retain your skin's elasticity by improving circulation. Additionally, you will be able to keep off those extra pounds.

Perform exercises for pregnant women. They include kegel exercises, stretches and all other simple movements.
Try low impact exercises and yoga. Pilates and yoga help you get rid of uncomfortable positions during pregnancy.

Pay attention to your weight

When you gain too much weight fast, you will have stretch marks. That is why you need to keep an eye on your weight. You can do so by:

  •     Avoiding overeating. Even though pregnant women are required to eat more calories than they were eating before, it does not mean that you eat twice as much.
  •     Keeping cravings at bay. When they do come, just have a little of whatever food you have cravings for and top it with a hefty serving of fruits. That way, you will have satisfied your cravings while watching your weight.

Apply natural oils

Natural oils moisturize and hydrate your skin. Apply natural oils on your lower back, legs, thighs, sides, belly and anywhere else.

Bio oil, shea butter, almond oil, wheat germ oil and cocoa butter are quite popular oils for moisturizing the skin of pregnant women. Pure lanolin is also wonderful.

Hii We aborted the first baby on March 28th due to some problems.
After six months we planned again. But at December ...
A-around 15% of pregnancies gets miscarried, that is nature's rule. You should avoid next pregnancy for 6 months from the last abortion. Chances of repeat abortion or pretem delivery increases if one becomes pregnant within 6 months of miscarriage. Also if abortion/ miscarriage was caused by any viral infection, then it will get cured automatically within 3 months time. Use contraception for 6 months from last miscarriage.
