Dear lybrate-user, you have not clarified about your periods. If you are having regular periods, you are safe and an occassional nausea could be because of acidity.

What Are Antioxidants and What Do They Do in the Body

MBBS
General Physician, Ahmedabad
What Are Antioxidants and What Do They Do in the Body

Antioxidants are substances that help the body protect itself from harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are not necessarily formed by medicines. It needs change to free radicals produced by enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions/by inflammation and external factors like smoking x-rays, chemicals, industrial pollutants, ozone and certain drugs.

Antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta carotene and minerals such as flavonoids and selenium; both of which are found in plants. The best kind of antioxidants the human body receives is from fruits and veggies. While flavonoids are found in red wine, fruits and in different types of tea; pharmaceutical companies also sell dietary supplements rich in antioxidants.

Antioxidants and their role in the human body:
Antioxidants play a great role in management, prevention and in the subsequent elimination of diseases such as various types of Cancers, Alzheimer’s and a few arthritis related conditions.

How safe are antioxidants for your body?
Medical practitioners are of the opinion that the best source of antioxidants is your natural sources rather than dietary supplements. Over abuse of antioxidants can be lethal for your body. It is always advised to have plenty of fruits and vegetables each day.

Not only does diet contribute to antioxidants, the body too employs certain mechanisms to protect itself from damage. Antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase are few such enzymes. Micronutrients such as iron, copper, selenium, zinc and manganese are required to help facilitate these mechanisms. Inadequate intake of these minerals in your diet might reduce the activities performed by antioxidants; these claims have been backed by scientific studies.

The risk of congenital varicella syndrome ranged from 0% to 0.4% when maternal rash occurred before 13 weeks gestation, a syndrome of birth defects in the infant. The most common manifestation of congenital varicella syndrome is scarring of the skin. Other abnormalities that can occur include a smaller than normal head, eye problems, low birth weight, small limbs, and mental retardation. If you have been treated well with acyclovir there is no reason to worry as risk is far low than general population. During a targeted ultrasound, a doctor uses sound waves to take a very close look at the fetus. Between the 18th and 20th weeks of pregnancy, the doctor may be able to see limb defects and brain problems that may have been caused by chicken pox infection.

My Sister (35years) has continuous periods from past two months, she got the scan done and everything is fine. They gave her tablets for hormonal changes. Hi. Has she gone for hormonal assay? Can you share the reports? If everything is normal, may be due to general weakness or excessive exertion, this is happening. Ask her to take homoeopathic medicines - Five Phos./ thrice daily and Alfaalfa Tonic (with ginseng)/ thrice daily - both for 1 month. Tell her to eat iron-rich foods: Red meat Pork Poultry Seafood Beans Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach Dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas Peas You can enhance your body's absorption of iron by drinking citrus juice or eating other foods rich in vitamin C at the same time that you eat high-iron foods. Vitamin C in citrus juices, like orange juice, helps your body to better absorb dietary iron. Vitamin C is also found in: Broccoli Grapefruit Kiwi Leafy greens Melons Oranges Peppers Strawberries Tangerines Tomatoes Apart from the diet correction, Exercising is an important part of our life! We know but still ignore it. But it keeps you active, keeps well-toned muscles, increases the body's circulation, releases stress/ stops release of stress-hormone from the body! So, when we can maintain our health by slightly altering diet and exercising, why would we need medication then? Let her implement this in her life and give her status feedback to me soon..Bye!

She has uterus cancer is surgery a better option for her? What will be the consequences?

MD - General Medicine, D.M. medical oncology
Oncologist, Mumbai
She has uterus cancer is surgery a better option for her? What will be the consequences?
Dear lybrate-user Uterus Cancer management involves three modalities: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Depending on the clinical stage of the patient [ which is determined on CT scan ],condition of the patient, further therapy is planned. If disease is localised [ which your doctor will decide based on imaging tests],surgery is the best treatment possible in this disease. After surgery, depending on the pathological stage, further therapy is planned i.e whether further radiation and chemotherapy is required or not.In the unfortunate circumstance of the disease being advanced [ metastatic ] ,then only chemotherapy is advised and surgery or radiation may be given depending on her symptoms. SO THE BEST OPTION IN HER CASE ENTIRELY DEPENDS ON THE CLINICAL STAGE OF THE DISEASE. The consequences of surgery if she undergoes surgery to an extent depends on whether the ovaries are also removed or not. She will have minimal risk of post operative complications and premature menopause [ if ovaries are also removed]

It is a temporary tantrum to seek attention of her mother. May be she was attached to only you with little exposure of outside world including a play school where kids as small as 2 get a chance to play with others, use lots of material with space which is not available within our homes. If this is her 1st school, you do not have to yield in. Be firm with her, send her to school minus lecturing her on benefits of education. Kids forget soon and start playing with other kids but become cranky the moment they get to see mother at pick up time. She will make good friends soon. May be teacher is not as good looking as her mother but tell the girl that it is a colorful world with all kinds of people of races and religions. No need to give her lectures as she will feel about her tantrums being successful, because she got your attention. She will not starve because of not eating but school is a must. Make it very clear that come what may, every child in your colony goes to school, why should she not go to a school. Ignore her attention seeking tricks.

Please do npt start with any harmone therapy or allopathic medicines A Pelvic Ultrasonography may be requred or if already done that is enough. Medicines (Ayurvedic) may have to be taken untill the periods become normal As you are getting married after a year there is ample time for the periods to become normal. A consultation is required. It may become normal in 3 months or 6 months Depends. All lab reports are to be seen.

Whenever I finger my wife vagina she doesn't like it and says it's burning inside. So what should I do?

MD Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Ahmedabad
She might be either having no lubrication, or there is a chance of infection. The infections are of 3 kinds. It would be better to get her checked by speculum examination to find out if there is infection, and if so what is the kind of infection. If it is due to non lubrication, you will need to give more time to foreplay and you may need to use a lubricant jelly.
