Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Hi two days back happen accident. There is back pain and one side hip pain. What should I do?

First of all do an x-ray of your back. Take rest for 2 days then gradually return to normal activity. Apply hot compress and gel locally. If pain does not reduce consult an orthopaedic surgeon.

Sir my mother age 55 yrs having sudden intermittent and moderate pain in left hip following down behind the thigh since 4 days and before this pain she got pain in back (lower back pain) for 2 days I did massage by analgesic then back pain went but hip pain is still and occuring mostly resting time. Hi I can understand your problem. The pain is due to nerve compression at lumber region but still clinical examination is needed. # relax & stay positive. # take hot and cold foementation. # change sleeping position. # use lumber support. For leg pain, please follow the below advise: keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Massage with your thumbs from the mid points of the shoulder blades on both sides towards the lower back of your head up to lower level of the ears. Use oil or water for massage. Rotate your head clockwise and anticlockwise, forward and down, left and right a few times. Do for 5 to 10 times morning and evening. Give pressure the dipping point on the portion between the thumb and the index finger on the back of the palm. Press and release for 15 times where the pain is more. This will solve the problem. Further do some wrist rotation exercise. Inform after 5 days.

Requires detailed examination and investigation. Preliminary investigations suggested: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, blood sugar fasting & pp, uric acid vit d urine r/e x-ray of the affected part. Anyway it may be tried sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back, knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Do not ignore it. Let it not become beginning of a bigger problem. Make sure that patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that he/she is going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, inform.

I feel suicidal for no reason, I often try to slit my wrist. What do I do to make these thoughts go away?
They are not just thoughts alone; there is a lot of unexpressed anger lurking within you that needs to desperately express itself. This anger is turned inwards and the result is this tendency to hurt yourself or terminate yourself. Whenever it seems that there is no specific reason, then it is bound to be something from early childhood that needs to be dealt with. Meet with a counselor and identify the feeling and thoroughly expend it out of your system. Your parents will know a lot of factors that may have contributed to this situation. Life is extremely precious and no one has a right to willfully end it unless there are very justifiable reasons. If you visit a geriatric ward in any hospital you will know the premium that is placed on survival, and how every possible way you can stretch life is attempted on frail and weak bodies that are in the twilight of their lives. You must also show that regard for your life, especially when you are that young and life is just beginning. You are obviously a bankrupt person spiritually: no spiritually sound person will contemplate suicide. Life is a gift of God and to be held in high esteem and preserved at all costs. You are probably depressed and when people are in that state, life looks miserable, hopeless, and futile. Depression can be resolved and if you have not used all the options to resolve depression, you would be inadvertently throwing away your precious life, never to get it back again. This life is an opportunity and since you have probably not utilized it well for various unfounded reasons please look at it with other people for other options and it will seem better. People who contemplate suicide are lonely people: just addressing that problem alone you will find good reasons to live. Failed or the threat of failed relationships are at the bottom of most suicides. A newer theory about suicide, devised by an American psychologist called Thomas Joiner, states that three main factors can cause someone to turn to suicide. They are: •A perception (usually mistaken) that they are alone and no one cares about them. •A feeling (again, usually mistaken) that they are a burden on others and that people would be better off if they were dead. •Fearlessness towards pain and death. Fearlessness poses the biggest risk that someone will commit a successful suicide attempt – they may fear the pain more than the fear of death. Go out there and conquer the world and don't ever let it get the better of you, ever.

Do take ust and vacuum therapy physiotherapy treatment for pain relief for 12 days followed by strengthening exercise from physiotherapist apply hot and cold water fomentation for thrice a day for 7 days regularly do revert for further assistance best wishes.

Hello lybrate user, back pain that is associated with day time sedentary jobs like computer professional s are associated with paraspinal muscle spasms. The best way to tackle this sort of pain is to do well spaced stretching exercises of the back, back extension exercises, using hot water bags to provide relief and avoiding stooping posture while sitting. Posture also plays a very important part in back pain, always maintain a straight posture while sitting. While getting up from the bed try to first go on your left or right side of the body and get up side ways. Avoid cruntches or sit-ups: they may increase the pressure on your back and may predispose to slip disc. Always maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of regular brisk walking, meditation, eating healthy. P. S: try to avoid pain killers (analgesics) as much as possible as many are associated with side effects that you may not be aware of. Stay healthy. Stay happy god bless you.

I have this problem since September 2015. I was sitting on floor on my feet without any other support when I suddenly felt pain in lower back on left side as if something was stretched there. I have had x ray and doctor says my spine is perfectly normal. I have had physiotherapy twice and acupressure as well but my problem is not properly cured. I always feel discomfort in my back when I bend forward and I can't do exercise like before and I am gaining weight. Also now I sometimes feel discomfort on right side also. I want know can it be treated or will be like this always as 1 year has already passed and can some food preferences cure or aggregate the problem?

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Its a nerve root injection. It is given in some painful conditions where there is inflammation around nerve roots causing compression signs and pain in low back and lower limbs. It can be effective in wisely selected patients and may not need surgery for same patient. Long term results are good for properly selected patients.

Joint & muscle pains are quite common ailment. Do not worry, rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Any way take ibuprofen 200mg od & sos x 5days you will need other supportive medicines also. Take multivitamins & other antioxidants along with. Do back (spine) exercises make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take do reply back for private consultation and detailed treatment plan. Don? t ignore.
