It can be made lesser only and only by Speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, I'd suggest you to visit a Psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

I often stammer during speaking. What are the reasons behind it and what arr the treatments.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Hi there, stammering is a complex condition which affects individuals in different ways. Therefore it isn't possible to make a general recommendation about the best treatments - different approaches help different people. Speech and language therapy can be available free under the nhs or you can see a therapist privately or take part in a low cost intensive course run by qualified therapists. Where do I start? we do suggest that you try to see a qualified speech and language therapist, at least in the first instance. A therapist who has experience of working with people who stammer will be able to offer you a range of different techniques. From these you can choose the techniques that you find most helpful (this might change over time) and the therapist will support you in the choice that you make. By contrast, people who offer alternative approaches tend to have just one technique which they offer to everyone, and this may not be right for you. Tried? try again. Even if you had therapy when you were younger, and felt that you weren't helped, it is still worth trying again, because therapy may have changed, and you may have changed. Remember - it is worth persevering. It can take time to find the approach that is right for you, but many adults make huge improvements to their speech. You can also get help to feel better about your speech just as it is - for some people, self-acceptance can be just as important as fluent speech. Usually, the two approaches go hand in hand. With any form of therapy, it's no doubt best, having made the decision to try it, to give it your best shot, rather than do it half-heartedly. If, in the end, it doesn't work for you, you can at least be assured that it wasn't for want of trying. All it means is that, at this point of time in your life, it is not the right approach for you. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! a cure for stammering? we don't provide information about approaches which claim to cure stammering. This isn't because we're defeatist about stammering, but because we believe that the approaches which are most helpful in the long-term require on-going practice of technique to be become effective. For more thoughts on this, and for some general recommendations about questions to ask before paying for private therapy, see is there a cure for stammering? where can I find a qualified speech and language therapist? there are three ways in which you can see a qualified speech and language therapist: under the nhs, by taking part in a course at city lit in london, an adult education centre with a specialist speech and language therapy department, or privately. Finding a qualified speech and language therapist. Other courses and approaches beyond working with a qualified speech and language therapist, there is a wide range of alternative therapies and courses available for adults who stammer. Sometimes it takes determination to find something that is right for you - and it can be difficult to distinguish genuine from spurious help. Alternative approaches clearly help some people, but because stammering is such an individual condition, they are not right for everyone. We suggest you read our article is there a cure for stammering? especially before committing yourself to spending a large amount of money. Two courses run by non-speech therapists and based on'costal breathing' are the mcguire programme and the starfish project. The stammering self-empowerment programme, set by paul brocklehurst phd, runs intensive courses and evening courses, mostly in macclesfield and manchester. The kings speakers in london is a public speaking group particularly for people who stammer, aimed at improving one's communication and leadership skills. Other public speaking groups round the country also welcome people who stammer. Other occasional workshops are shown on our events page. Courses aimed particularly at the workplace include those offered by talkcoach, and some of the courses offered by city lit in london. Electronic fluency devices electronic devices are available on the market which are intended to help people who stammer produce more fluent speech. They mostly use'altered auditory feedback' playing back speech into one's ear with a delay and often at a different pitch. More on electronic fluency devices. Self-help and confidence building the sharing and discussing of a problem with others who stammer can often prove helpful. There may be a self-help group in your area, or there are opportunities for support and discussion over the internet or by telephone. You can come to events such as bsa conferences and open days. There is also a lot of reading matter on stammering available. I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day.

This is for child 4 year old. Studies in Jr. Kg. I feel that my child has difficulty in clarity of speech and speaking in complete sentences. He requires language development. He communicates his needs and is quite good with written work in academics but story telling, language related narration is difficult. Also he communicates only in English. Though he understands our mother tongue Malayalam and Hindi, he communicates back only in English. Is there any way you can help him develop language skills. FYI he was premature 8th month baby, but had all his milestones correctly. His birth weight was 1.8 kg. He is very active and playful child.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. I don't see any problems in your child. If he is able to communicate, written work in academics etc, then the other aspects should be due to lack of proper training. I suggest you to consult a psychologist for assessment of learning disability areas including language ability. I too am from Kerala and I wish to speak to you as well as your child. You can contact me through Lybrate. Take care.

I've noticed a developing tremor in my left arm over the last month that I've never had before, and it can get distracting enough to prevent daily tasks such as making coffee without spilks, and I've had a verbal stammering and stuttering problem. It's not severe, but I've become easily annoyed by small, simple tasks in my life and I'm uncertain what caused the onset. Is this an immediate concern, or one I can consult my family doctor about?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You must consult your doctor. These are not normal symptoms. Apart from the doctor please do meet with a counselor. At your age a lot of things could happen around hormonal imbalances and also from developmental issues that will come up for the last time seeking a resolution. Together they can compound matters to make you feel disturbed. But whatever the case tumors must never be neglected.

Dear Ashish, Stammering is "speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or "say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses". Stammering could be due to two reasons. One. Vocal chord misalignment. Two. Psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ENT Specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ENT specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, You should consult a psychologist for stammer therapy. Take care.

Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

MD, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

Stuttering is a type of speech disorder wherein, a person speaks slower than normal. It is quite  common in the age group of 3 to 8. The relationship between stress and stuttering has been pondered over for decades now. A lot of people seem to believe that stress and stuttering are co-related. On the contrary, recent studies show that stress is more of a consequence rather than a cause of stuttering. If you take the first theory into consideration, then according to that, children would be the greatest victims of anxiety and stress. But it is seen that the level of stress increases proportionately with the increase in age.

Social anxiety in teenagers increases due to stuttering, when they come across individuals who can speak in a normal pace. This in turn can crush their self confidence and lead them to isolate themselves from social groups and people in general. Hence, it is important to deal with stuttering in the early ages or as and when it occurs.

Sometimes stuttering can develop due to physical or mental trauma.  Most people with stuttering do not seek therapy for it because they might not think of it to be too severe. Little do they realise that a simple process of speech therapy can help them overcome this disability and rejuvenate their level of self-confidence.

It has also come to light, that people with relapse in stuttering post therapy has shown a three-fold increase in anxiety levels than normal. Hence we cannot ignore the strong relationship between stress and stuttering. So from the above evidence, it is safe to conclude that social anxiety or stress develops as a result of chronic stuttering.

How to deal with stress related to stuttering?

Seeking help is a great start to tackle your disability. If your stuttering is prominent enough to warrant therapy, you must seek professional help for the same. You must also learn to control your anxiety by dismissing any anxious thought or make sincere efforts in controlling physical anxiety.

You can also try to increase your social skills by participating in events, such as public speaking that can reduce your stress levels and make yourself more confident about yourself. One must also remember that a person is defined by what he does rather than what he says. So never let a minor disability come in the way of your self worth!

Is stammering or stuttering a disease? How can it be cured? Are there any medicines? How can it be controlled? Is there any exercises?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Dear lybrate-user, You can consult a speech therapist and attend a personality development course. Add, a clinical psychologist to the list. Those therapists know the extent of your problem and their limitations. At some stage, they may refer you to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist may offer an antidepressant and/or anxiolytic drug for few months in addition. I hope you have done ENT check up.
