Why is Cancer the biggest Threat to the YOUNG in India?

Why is Cancer the biggest Threat to the YOUNG in India?

Why is Cancer the biggest Threat to the YOUNG in India?

There are fewer Indians who have successfully battled Cancer and have emerged successful. Yuvraj Singh, the legendary cricketer, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer at 29, survived due to an early detection. Cancer cases in India are not as many as they are in the developed world. However, due to late detection the survival rate in the country is far worse. Particularly, we are losing our youth to Cancer. Most tobacco (pan masala) related cancers and child cancers go undetected until very late.

Few cancers like cervical cancer and breast cancer which affect women of any age, are curable, however, due to lack of awareness and timely screening, many Indian women succumb to these cancers. The most common sites for cancer among men are lung, prostate, colon, rectum, stomach and liver while that among women are breast, colon, rectum, lung, cervix and stomach.

In proportion to our population, we lack the right infrastructure nationwide. esp in the northern and north eastern region, there is a dearth of good cancer facilities, where radiation, care or treatment can be given. Not even one third of cancer patients are alive beyond 5 years after their diagnosis in India, and about 71% of cancer deaths occur in patients in their prime productive years — between the ages of 30 to 69 years.

“Most Indians believe that cancer is generally incurable and that it should be kept secret from neighbors and family.” -  Dr Paul Goss, MD, Harvard University.

All these factors have contributed to a very high mortality rate. No wonder Cancer is dreaded in the country. Investment, infrastructure, lifestyles as well as mindsets need to change if we were to contain the Cancer mortality rate. While you need to watch out for early signs of cancer, here are the lifestyle changes every individual esp. all youth must adopt to avoid cancer.

  1. Avoid Tobacco - both smoking and chewing.

  2. Reduce alcohol intake - Save your organs from deteriorating.

  3. Limit UV ray exposure from the sun - Keeps your skin safe.

  4. Maintain a healthy diet - Include foods rich in Vitamins, minerals and fiber which nourish your body and build immunity.

  5. Increase your level of fitness - Maintain a good bodyweight. Additional flab invites a host of troubles, that includes variety of cancers.

  6. Seeking regular medical checkup or screening - This is the only way to prevent and get detected early on.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer? I oftenly get pain in the breast. Is it a symptom of a breast disease?

BAMS, MD Ayurveda
Sexologist, Lonavala
Often getting breast pain is not a symptom of breast cancer. If you notice these symptoms swelling of all or part of the breast. Skin irritation or dimpling. Breast pain. Nipple pain or the nipple turning inward. Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin. Then you need ayurvedic treatment.

Dry fruits are rich in protein and cholestrol and can be beneficial to a normal individual if taken in limited quantity of two pieces per day and it's better to be avoided by diabetic people.

Her breast produces liquid white discharge during love-making sessions, when pressed with even little pressure. Only the left breast. Is it anything to be concerned about?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Normal nipple discharge more commonly occurs in both nipples and is often released when the nipples are compressed or squeezed (nipples may secrete fluid when they are stimulated or squeezed during love making). Some women who are concerned about breast secretions may actually cause it to worsen. They do this by repeatedly squeezing their nipples to check for nipple discharge. In these instances, leaving the nipples alone for a while may help the condition to improve. So no problem in your case. It is normal---------------------

I am suffering from cancer on abdominal muscle, which was removed by surgery and radiation given on September 2012. Spindle cell sarcoma. Till now, I am under medical review every 6 months, I am afraid whether it will come again. What shall I do to stop re occurrence again.

Post Doctoral Research (Ph.D.) (A.M) (Oncology), Integrative Oncology for Physicians (MSKCC, N.Y, USA), Doctor of Natural Medicine (N.D/ N.M.D), Ayurveda (I) Cert., Advanced Strategic Management (APSM), B.E (Computer Sc. & Engg.), Clinically Relevant Herb-Drug Interactions (CME) - (Cine-Med Inc. Alternative Medicine Specialist, Bhubaneswar
Well Mr. Lybrate-user. I appreciate you seeking help. As I understand, the prognosis stands better usually in surgeries with clean margins. A clean surgery can, at times, be difficult especially for sarcomas in the abdominal muscle considering proximity of the other abdominal organs, and surgeries in such cases are most likely to be followed by chemotherapy/ radiation as deems appropriate by the oncologist (s). Apart from the above-mentioned, stage and grade of the cancer could also impact the chances of recurrence. Nevertheless, having already gone through the treatment procedure successfully and having already completed over three and a half years of disease free survival, I would only encourage you to stay positive, hopeful and brave as ever. Do see your doc/ oncologists for medical review regularly as advised. Besides the guidelines from your doc (s) which you need to follow strictly, I would advise you to stop tobacco smoking & restrict alcohol consumption, if any. Try maintaining a good health by being physically active, consume healthy/ nutritious diet (preferably mediterranean) with emphasis on plenty of leafy greens and fresh fruits, stay well hydrated, adopt a healthy lifestyle and de-stress regularly. A relaxed and stress free mind is also known to have positive impacts on health. In this connection, I would advise you to practise relaxation techniques like yogasanas (like'savasana'), meditation, listening to soothing music, social interactions, attending or viewing spiritual programmes etc all to stay relaxed and happy. The above-mentioned dietary and lifestyle recommendations may help lower the risks of recurrence or other cancers if not stop it completely. Do take care and I wish you all good health. Sincerely.

What presentation should be taken after breast cancer treatment. 2 year has been completed.

MD - Alternate Medicine, BHMS
Homeopath, Surat
If the female is healthy without any symptoms. Then nothing to be done. But if some nodular thing is felt in breast, then again she needs to go for mammography and checked. And if it comes positive then take homoeopathic carcinocinum 200 1 dose for that to avoid re-appearance.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, I would advise that you have a healthy & balanced diet, preferably Mediterranean on a day to day basis. Stay well hydrated, exercise daily in fresh air, de-stress and relax. Keep your nostrils cleaned, you can put couple of saline nasal drops (pediatric), in both nostrils, 3 to 4 times daily. Try avoiding all that possibly trigger an allergy. You can connect with your complete blood picture for further traction with alternative medicines. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best. Sincerely

I am 33 years old. Currently I am suffering from a breast cancer. I don't have child since last 4 years of marriage. I had taken treatment for it but failed. I have question that after recovering from cancer, Will I be able to take treatment for fertility.

MD - Radiothrapy, MBBS
Oncologist, Pune
As you don't have a child, there is a option of ovum preservation before starting chemotherapy. Many women experience menopause after chemotherapy, most of them start their normal menstrual cycle within 2 years and can have normal babies. Some might have permanent menopause. Recently there are some drugs given during chemotherapy which may reduce the effects of chemotherapy on ovaries and increase chances of pregnancy later on. Please consult Radiation oncologist from your city for further information. Hope this information is helpful.
