Parathyroid Hormone Treatment - How it is Beneficial for Osteoporosis?

Parathyroid Hormone Treatment - How it is Beneficial for Osteoporosis?

What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a medical condition wherein the bone becomes fragile and breaks easily even with a minor fall. The bones of spine, wrists and hips get affected the most. These fractured bones lead to severe pain and can force a person to become immobile. A spine fracture can even lead to a loss of height.

What is parathyroid hormone?
Parathyroid is a naturally occurring hormone that regulates the amount of calcium present in the body. They mitigate the risk of bone breakage in the body for a patient suffering with osteoporosis. These hormones are injected into the body on a daily basis to maintain the normal flow of calcium in the body.

How does the treatment work?
Treatments are available in the form of drugs and injections. A doctor can prescribe drugs, if the patient is at an increased rate of bone breakage. The parathyroid hormone helps to protect the bone from breaking, but have no role when the bone actually breaks. The body has a natural process of breaking a bone and rebuilding it by itself. Osteoporosis sets in motion when this process of bone formation is disturbed.

When does a doctor prescribe hormonal treatment?
If a patient has undergone a number of vertebral compression fractures and the condition has not improved, a doctor might suggest to undergo parathyroid hormone treatment. The treatment requires nursing support due to a patient’s delicate bone condition. A maximum dosage of 20 micro grams of parathyroid can be injected for a time duration not exceeding 2 years.

Things to know about the treatment:

  1. Be informed: It is good to be well informed about the course of the treatment, treatment duration, plausible problems etc. This will help a patient to be on top of the decision making process. The helpline of the 'National Osteoporosis Society' can be reached to understand the preparation required for a patient to undergo the treatment.
  2. Take the right dosage at the right time: Parathyroid injections should be injected on a daily basis for a maximum time period of 2 years. These injections are taken daily at the same time. It should be ensured that none of the injections are skipped without the prior approval of a doctor. The injection, which lasts for 28 days, needs to be stored in a refrigerator. In case a patient is travelling, special bags are available that has space for storing gel packs.
  3. Side effects: Most patients do not report any side effects, but they do exist. Possible side effects include dizziness, arthralgia, depression and headache. These symptoms often suggest that your body is reacting to the parathyroid hormone treatment. A doctor may or may not prescribe any further drugs to address these symptoms.

I have a hypokalemia paralysis with normal level of thyroid I continue my medicine from one month but still my poytasium is low day by day and I take everyday potkular potassium syrup i want to cure permanently so give me best best option.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a disorder that causes occasional episodes of muscle weakness and sometimes a lower than normal level of potassium in the blood. It is one of a group of genetic disorders that includes hyperkalemic periodic paralysis and thyrotoxic periodic paralysis. Causes hypokalemic periodic paralysis is congenital. This means it is present at birth. In most cases, it is passed down through families (inherited) as an autosomal dominant disorder. In other words only one parent needs to pass the gene related to this condition on to you in order for you to be affected. Occasionally, the condition may be the result of a genetic problem that is not inherited. Unlike other forms of periodic paralysis, persons with congenital hypokalemic periodic paralysis have normal thyroid function. But they have a very low blood level of potassium during episodes of weakness. This results from potassium moving from the blood into muscle cells in an abnormal way. Risk factors include having other family members with periodic paralysis. The risk is slightly higher in asian men who also have thyroid disorders. The most important treatment in severe hypokalemia is addressing the cause, such as improving the diet, treating diarrhea, or stopping an offending medication. Patients without a significant source of potassium loss and who show no symptoms of hypokalemia may not require treatment. Mild hypokalemia (>3.0 meq/l) may be treated with oral potassium chloride supplements (klor-con, sando-k, slow-k). As this is often part of a poor nutritional intake, potassium-containing foods may be recommended, such as leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, coconut water, citrus fruits, oranges, or bananas.[14] both dietary and pharmaceutical supplements are used for people taking diuretic medications. Severe hypokalemia (<3.0 meq/l) may require intravenous supplementation. Typically, a saline solution is used, with 20? 40 meq/l kcl per liter over 3? 4 hours. Giving iv potassium at faster rates (20? 25 meq/hr) may predispose to ventricular tachycardias and requires intensive monitoring. A generally safe rate is 10 meq/hr. Even in severe hypokalemia, oral supplementation is preferred given its safety profile. Sustained-release formulations should be avoided in acute settings. Difficult or resistant cases of hypokalemia may be amenable to a potassium-sparing diuretic, such as amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone, or eplerenone. Concomitant hypomagnesemia will inhibit potassium replacement, as magnesium is a cofactor for potassium uptake. when replacing potassium intravenously, infusion by a central line is encouraged to avoid the frequent occurrence of a burning sensation at the site of a peripheral infusion, or the rare occurrence of damage to the vein. When peripheral infusions are necessary, the burning can be reduced by diluting the potassium in larger amounts of fluid, or mixing 3 ml of 1% lidocaine to each 10 meq of kcl per 50 ml of fluid. For more doubts you can ask me privately.

My mother is suffering from breast cancer at first stage what is the time limit in which treatment must be completed.

MD - Radiation Oncology, MBBS, DNB (Radiotherapy)
Oncologist, Howrah
After surgery, chemotherapy is started when the wound healing is completed, usually 3-4 weeks after surgery. Chemotherapy is given at 3 weeks interval for 6-8 cycles. If it is stage I breast cancer and breast conservation surgery is done, then she also requires radiotherapy which would take another 5 weeks. Radiotherapy is usually initiated 3-4 weeks after chemotherapy. Depending on hormone receptor status, hormone therapy is started after radiotherapy. Hormone therapy is given for at least 5 years.

If you travel lot via bike. Then you have to change or travel for few weeks via any four wheeler or via train as there shouldn't be strain on your back. You have to daily surynamskar exercise as you tolerated. It will strengthen your back muscles. And help to recover. For present pain you have to take. It's cause of concern that your insulin is not acting to neutralize the sugar while you are taking good medicines prescribed by your experience doctor. This is non response of drugs. It's not fault in treatment by your doctor. I would suggest the support of ayurveda medicine as support to your current medicine. Both won't counteract with each other. Observing the response of this integrative approach, further directions would be decided. If you agree, I would mention the first phase of safe, side effect less, easy to take and economic medicines which will prevent complications also.

Hello, tamoxifen eventhough well tolerated, can cause many side effects. One of those is difficulty in getting sleep. So it is possible that her sleep disturbance is due that drug. One way to over come this is to exercise regularly for about an hour, brisk walking can be a good option. Because of regular exercise body will need better rest and sleep may be induced faster. She should also learn ways to relax through positive suggestions which can also help in inducing sleep. Soothing music like classical (hindustani) santur or basuri can also help. Thanks.

My daughter is 7 years old but she have a problem to remember of study que ans wt should I do for it.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
For a child of that age use a play-way method to help her remember. However, I am concerned whether you are pushing her too much or having high expectations on her. If the teachers are also complaining, then there may be some concern. In that case I recommend that you go to a child counselor who specializes in child learning difficulties who will need information, both genetic and as well as her history from prenatal days. If there are any disturbing experiences, they may play a role in distracting her. Simple sensory recall techniques are taught very well in a Montessori school, and so you may consider shifting her to one such school. Picture recall is an easily used method to improve memory. Before that she must be able to concentrate: Yoga has some good exercises to improve concentration, which you might explore.
