I am having trouble in hearing. I am only 45 can I have hearing problem in this age. I am not that old. Can this be because I have to communicate on headphones due to my work.

Hello, there is no age limit for hearing loss, it can affect anybody irrespective of age, gender, race, religion etc. As you mentioned you r talking to people through headphones, which can one of the main reason for hearing loss, because continuous use of headphones leads to temporary hearing loss and eardrum rupture, so try to avoid or maintain a gap between use of headphone for air ventilation and protection of hearing mechanism.

Air Condition [AC] are the one of the reason for dehydration. Even if we live in AC we need to take water for about 3 to 4 lts per day. People who are all working in AC atmosphere eg, IT sectors etc.. need to take care of yourselves by taking water, this will also reduce your stress by caring oxygen inside our body.

To be straight forward, benefits doesn' t depend on the company. All international companies have all the models of hearing aids. Skilled programming along with the selection of right model maximizes the benefits. This may require multiple visits to the clinic. Hence consult a qualified audiologist closer to your place.

It is nice to read that your daughter's hearing capacity has increased. It has to be seen that it has become to optimum level, if so, wait n watch. If it starts deteriorating, go for hearing aid. If hearing is not to optimal level, go for aid. It shall help in mental development n learning which otherwise is hampered.

Yes, it is a genetic problem, as your family suffering from. There is no treatment for genetic disorder, but a digital programmable hearing aid can solve your problem by some extent. So get your ear checked and if the loss is sensorineural, go for hearing aid.

I have a hearing problem what should I do I have just 21 years old, wil you give a suggestions for that? And also give a precautions for that.

master in audiology &speech language pathology

Hello ma'am, as you've hearing difficulty it required get to done your audiometry from audiologist. For hearing difficulty there r many causes any history related to noise exposure, if you r hearing very loud music for respective hrs, any otologic history such as discharge from ear, pain medical history. Frequent cold & cough problem as a precaution point of view 1st you've to mentioned in detail what you suggest it caused of but in general avoid to remain your ear wet, don't pour any oil or water in it. Keep ear dry, used ear protection device if surrounded environment is noisy, don't try to remove your wax by own don't used earbud so frequently bcoz most of people unaware how much they've to insert it & then result is damage of that. So if you feel that hearing difficulty due to wax accumulation then concern & remove from ent.

From early childhood, I have severe hearing loss in my right ear. I do not remember whether it was from birth or was a result of some hitting done on my right ear by one of the bullies (i remember the incident remotely, though can not attribute the hearing loss to that). My left ear is perfect and am a healthy guy of 42 years doing very well professionally and part of top management in one of the reputed companies. I had at the age of 18 years went for a ent check up where they diagnosis as severe hearing loss in the right ear. However, when I put in a earphone in my right ear and tightly close my left ear to close any sound, I can remotely hear, but only very light sounds. My query is, can I try to recover my right ear hearing or leave it? Is there any hope of recovery? Though you might say it needs to be checked, but what do you make out first cut from the details that I have provided? Now a days with so much advances in med sciences, I am hoping you cd help me with your valuable advice and way forward.

hi, if its severe loss or damage to your inner ear unfortunately it cannot be reveresed. like you mentioned in the comment that science have advanced to the extent to help the patient to hear better with a better hearing aid and customised solutions as per the reqyirment of the patient. if the loss is creating a serious impact on your lifestyle or ur profession would suggest you to go for a good hearing device. if you are shy to wear a external device you have various models which can fit inside your ear as well and that may give a bit of sigh from your condition

Dealing With Hearing Loss

Dealing With Hearing Loss

Hearing is one of the five senses that you or anyone else relies on for communication and a whole host of other things. Among the five senses, touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight, it is often hearing, which is the most easily affected. You don't have to be a senior citizen to experience hearing loss as it is quite common among younger people as well. This problem is also getting widespread with each passing day.

Before coping with hearing loss, the first job is to detect it
If you have a hunch that you or any of your loved ones is suffering from hearing loss, it is important that you get it diagnosed. Some of the common symptoms of hearing loss will be:

  1. Hearing difficulties while talking to someone over the phone
  2. Straining to hear conversations with family members or friends in household situations
  3. People usually need to repeat what they talk to you with a louder voice
  4. You often hear complaints that you keep the TV too loud.
  5. In crowded situations, such as family gatherings or a restaurant, you have problems listening to people.

Although this condition tends to affect senior citizens, an increasing trend shows younger people i.e. people mostly in their 40 and 50s and even younger than that suffer from this condition.

How to deal with hearing loss?
Some of the options to deal with hearing loss are mentioned below.

  1. Once diagnosed with hearing problems, change your ways of communication: If you or your loved ones have been diagnosed with hearing problems, it is important that both adjust your ways to deal with the problem. Rather than getting angry at the other for not being able to communicate effectively, develop and strategize ways to make communication less problematic and erratic.
  2. Cochlear implants: This is a newer technology, which has gained popularity in the past decade or so. These are directly implanted into the inner ear and are designed to bypass the damaged areas of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. These have become very popular, although, are not a replacement of natural hearing. It is only prescribed for people who have severe hearing loss or are deaf.
  3. Hearing aids: Although selecting a hearing aid is difficult as the patient needs to be comfortable, once selected it is one of the best solutions for the hearing impaired. The functionality of these devices can be extended with the hearing assistive technology or HAT devices that can focus the audio waves depending on the situations and give a more tailored approach for every individual's needs.

Try to avoid usage of headphones. Coz by doing that you r putting the sound source close to tympanic membrane. Excess use may cause pain. And the ringing sound is called tinnitus. Some how that is also related to this. So go for otoscopic examination, puretone audiometry, impedance audiometry test. Share the reports with me. If possible consult e. N. T specialist available nearby.

Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease. What you eat has a direct impact on your cholesterol level. In fact, a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol-lowering foods may help lower cholesterol as much as statin medication for some people. Working with a registered dietitian and doctor is the key to develop and maintain a successful health program to manage it. I will inform you on how to make diet, lifestyle changes, make you understand instructions for taking medication because it won't work if you don't take it as directed. Consult privately for a holistic dietary therapy to solve your problems.

Chewing chewing gum good or bad for teeth? Some genuine advice please. If good which one is advisable?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition, B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition, Post Graduate Diploma in Health and Family Welfare

Gums with sugar should be avoided. Sugar-free chewing gums are non-harmful. Some may claim that it helps fight activities however no scientific evidence exists. Also, not all sugar-free gums are good. Be aware that non-sugar sweeteners sometimes cause bloating, diarrhea or flatulence. So your decision lies in what suits your body. If you don't have such side effects and you are addicted to it, then go for it. Better avoid gums if you can. Chew neem sticks instead.

All About Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a common sensory problem that generally develops with increasing age or due to prolonged or persistent exposure to loud noises. It is one of the most typical problems that occurs throughout the world. If you are suffering from partial hearing loss, you may find ways of keeping in touch with your family and friends. If you are not suffering from such the following may help you keep your hearing intact for years to come.

Types of hearing loss:
There are two main types of hearing loss:
1. Conductive Hearing Loss where the problem lies in the middle ear, eardrum or ossicles. A conductive hearing loss affects the passage of sound between the eardrum and the inner ear. Sound passes down the ear canal to the ear drum and through the middle ear, where the sound is transmitted across the middle ear by the three bones called the ossicles to the inner ear.

Causes of conductive hearing loss:

  1. Malformation of outer ear, ear canal, or middle ear structures
  2. Fluid in the middle ear from colds
  3. Ear infection (otitis media - an infection of the middle ear in which an accumulation of fluid may interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles
  4. Allergies
  5. Poor Eustachian tube function
  6. Perforated eardrum
  7. Benign tumors
  8. Impacted earwax
  9. Infection in the ear canal
  10. Foreign body in the ear
  11. Otosclerosis

2. Sensorineural Hearing Loss where there is damage in the inner ear, cochlea or hearing nerve. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea), or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. Most of the time, SNHL cannot be medically or surgically corrected. This is the most common type of permanent hearing loss.

Causes of sensorineural hearing loss:

  1. Exposure to loud noise
  2. Head trauma
  3. Virus or disease
  4. Autoimmune inner ear disease
  5. Hearing loss that runs in the family
  6. Aging (presbycusis)
  7. Malformation of the inner ear
  8. Meniere's Disease
  9. Otosclerosis
  10. Tumors

Coping with Hearing Loss:
Antibiotics and eardrops are often prescribed to treat hearing loss and its symptoms. In many cases, people suffering from severe hearing loss use hearing aids. Hearing aids are tiny instruments that people use in their ears to make sounds louder. People who suffer from hearing loss cope with their problems through increased concentration and focus. The usual way involves reading the moving lips of the person while they talk. Prevention is better than cure and is the best solution to avoid long term hearing loss. Avoiding continuous loud noises, to the possible extent helps prevent hearing loss to a great extent.
