Hello Lybrate user Wrist muscles are quite weak and unable to bear load while playing badminton beacuse of change in position of wrist & hand. Do warm water exercises of wrist and strengthening exercise. Avoid jerky movements at wrist, apply gently muscle relaxant ointment/gel. Wear wrist band while working to provide support to joint. Exercises with advice of qualified physiotherapist only.

World Arthritis Day: All You Need To Know About Arthritis

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints in one or more areas of the body. The symptoms of arthritis usually appear gradually but they may also occur suddenly.

What Causes Arthritis?

There are different causes depending on the type of arthritis. The most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis: this is caused by normal wear and tear throughout life; this natural breakdown of cartilage tissue can be exacerbated by an infection or injury to the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis: In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule. This lining, known as the synovial membrane, becomes inflamed and swollen.

Who is at risk?

Risk factors for arthritis include:

Family history
Age: The risk of many types of arthritis increases with age.
Gender: Women are more likely than are men to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while most of the people who have gout are men.
Previous joint injury: People who have injured a joint are more likely to eventually develop arthritis in that joint.
Obesity: Carrying excess weight puts stress on joints, especially knees, hips and spine. Obese people have a higher risk of developing arthritis

What Are the signs of Arthritis?

These include joint pain and stiffness, swelling of the joints, decrease in range of motion of joints or redness of the skin around the joint.

How Is Arthritis Diagnosed?

The doctor diagnoses arthritis on the basis of:

Physical examination
Laboratory tests: Fluids commonly analyzed include blood, urine and joint fluid.
Imaging: Imaging scans such as X-ray, MRI, and CT scans are commonly used to assess extend of damage to joints
Arthroscopy: arthroscopy involves inserting a small, flexible tube called an arthroscope through an incision near the joint. The arthroscope transmits images from inside the joint to a video screen.

How is Arthritis managed?

The main goal of treatment is to reduce pain, prevent any additional damage to the joints and improve joint mobility. Management includes:

Medications: these are given to manage symptoms of arthritis and to improve range of motion.

Surgery: Surgery may be needed to replace the damaged joint with an artificial one.

Exercise:  Exercise can help in strengthening the muscles around the affected joint and prevent further damage. Options include stretching exercises, exercises that provide range of motion, low-impact aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling.

Weight loss: Being overweight can increase complications of arthritis and contribute to arthritis pain. Make gradual and permanent lifestyle changes like eating healthy, portion control, avoiding deep fried foods and following an exercise regimen.

Hand pain can be caused by many conditions. 1. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis can affect the small joints of fingers and wrist. There will be associated swelling of joints and nodules on fingers. 2. Tenosynovitis of the finger muscles. In this case finger movements will be painful. You might be suffering from this condition. 3. Vascular diseases like Raynauds phenomena , characterised by color changes of hand from Blue to red and vice versa on temperature changes. 4. Nerve entrapment syndromes cause hand pain along with numbness, tingling sensation and muscle weakness. 5. Fractures of small bones of fingers. 6. Infections of soft tissues or tendons of hands. Pregnancy test should be done only after 7 days of missed period. So if it was expected on 3 march then it should be done on 12 march (added 2 days for the feb). If negative then keep repeating it every week till menses comes. You have to read it within 5 min of putting the urine and even faint second line is positive. Also as you r having backache, that means most probably menses r going to come soon. Also symptoms of pregnancy will appear only after 2 weeks of missed period.

Back ache can be due to several reasons. It can be muscular, related to disc degeneration or prolapse, joint irritation or nerve pinching. Most common is muscle pain due to tight and weak back and abdominal muscles. Keep a positive attitude, focus more on keeping good posture especially when sitting for long hours, use lumbar support. Take frequent breaks and stretch in between. Try changing sleeping habits. Try hot or cold therapy as tolerated. Wish you speedy recovery. Also if you are breast feeding please use a good pillow or pillows to support your back and the baby as most time poor posture for long times makes the pain worse.

Some times I do get pain in my shoulder. Daily I will play shuttle. So what would be d reason for it?

Diploma in Acupuncture, Pranic Healing, MD - Acupuncture
Acupuncturist, Bangalore
Massage with your thumbs from the mid points of the shoulder blades on both sides towards the lower back of your head up to lower level of the ears. Use oil or water for massage. Rotate your head clockwise and anticlockwise, forward and down, left and right a few times. Do for 5 to 10 times morning and evening give pressure the dipping point on the portion between the thumb and the index finger on the back of the palm. Press and release for 15 times where the pain is more. This will solve the problem. Further do some wrist rotation exercise. Consult after 5 days avoid junk food, oil, maida, sugar has to be cut down very much. Realise that foregoing these items are better than the pain.

M.Ch - Neuro Surgery, MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Mumbai
Hello sorry to hear this. It seems you have a fracture in the c1 and some degenerative changes because of that. The most common type of c1 fracture is the jefferson's fracture. Most of these types of fractures can be managed without surgery. There are a few rare subtypes and associated injuries which may necessitate a surgery. Will you please upload me the ct, mri reports so that I can determine the exact type of your injury and then will be able to tell you if you need any surgery or it can be managed without surgery. Best wishes.

I am 49 years old, male having body pain. Pain in back side of knee, more like muscular pain.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation also please mention if there are any other symptoms like swelling, any s/s of inflammation or infection like skin redness, local warmth at affected site etc. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards
