Hi Often its said that if you do not complete a course of your antibiotics the particular antibiotic becomes sterile for you of life. For example if i'm having a stomach upset and I start with norfolx tz and do not compete the course it won't work on me in the future. Can you please let me know how much of this is true?

BHMS
Homeopath, Howrah
The micro organisms in our body gets adapted to perticular medicine if taken regularly. If you have a chronic problem of diarrhoea that occurs frequently you should complete the course as it kills majority of germs in your body and also change of diet habits.

Sleep Disorders - Ayurvedic Remedies for Treating Them!

Sleep Disorders - Ayurvedic Remedies for Treating Them!

Most of us are not blessed with a good night's sleep and face common problems that occur during sleep, such as snoring, insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and sleep deprivation. According to Ayurveda, proper sleep and a healthy diet are of equal importance. Sleep is the period during which the body is able to recuperate and heal itself as well bring about a balance in emotions and mental state. Imbalances in sleep, according to Ayurveda, is caused due to imbalance or dosha in the three subcategories that the human body is divided into. The imbalances are referred to as Kapha dosha, Pitta dosha and Vata dosha.

Vata Dosha
Imbalance in Vata occurs when the co-ordination between dhi (learning), dhriti (retention) and smriti (recollection) is weakened. When a person is trying to sleep but is simultaneously recollecting the events which occurred during the day, it leads to the same emotions and feelings being reproduced. This renders the person incapable of detaching from the feelings and thus, prevents them to sleep. Some Ayurvedic remedies to address this issue include:

1. Using appropriate sleep tablets
2. Drinking a special tea which aids in sleeping, before going to sleep. The tea should contain a mixture of herbs and spices which would help in calming the emotions
3. Have food that pacifies Vata
4. Adopting and following a proper schedule, where enough time is available for sleep

5. Try not to think about the problems while in bed.

Pitta Dosha
A sleep disorder due to pitta dosha happens when a person has no problems in falling asleep, but is awakened at odd hours during the night and is unable to fall back asleep. It is common that people suffering from trauma or imbalances in pitta are susceptible to this problem. Pitta-type sleep is often disrupted by wild and fiery dreams. Remedies include:
1. The room where the person is sleeping should be kept cool. The likelihood of awakening during the night is increased if the room is hot and stuffy.
2. Therapeutic oils which are specifically designed to pacify Pitta dosha should be used.
3. Foods that pacify pitta dosha should be eaten. These foods should normally be at room temperature rather being hot.
4. A pitta pacifying lifestyle should be followed. This includes sleeping before 10:00 p.m., having three meals a day, etc.

Kapha dosha
Sleep disorders associated with kapha dosha causes a person to have a long and deep sleep, but feel exhausted when woken up. Additionally, a feeling of lethargy persists throughout the day. Remedies include:
1. Reduce coffee consumption
2. Adopt the consumption Kapha or Green Tea
3. Adopt a Kapha-pacifying lifestyle. This includes vigorous morning exercise. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Hello- Foreskin has a fixed diameter from which a flaccid penis can pass through. In case or erection, the size of penis increases but the opening diameter of the foreskin remain unchanged leading to obstruction of penis head inside it. Any forceful attempt to treat it may often results in pain and bleeding. The condition is medically known as Phimosis. And yes, it will make your sex painful and non pleasurable. Fortunately the condition can be cured with the help of ayurvedic medications and exercise schedules.

Best Way to Relieve from Constipation

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, DM - Gastroenterology

Best Way to Relieve from Constipation

1. Eat more fibre

‘It is recommended you have 25 to 50 grams of fibre a day,’foods with lots of fibre include cereals such as wheat germ and bran, whole-wheat and rye flours, grainy breads, fresh fruit (especially berries), dried fruits such as prunes and figs, vegetables, and legumes such as chickpeas, lentils and beans. Increase fibre intake gradually to avoid getting gas or diarrhea, or worsening constipation.

2. Exercise regularly

Aim to be physically active at least three times a week for 30 minutes or more. Physical activity stimulates your intestinal muscles to work more efficiently. It also decreases the amount of time needed for food to move through your intestines, so stools stay moist.

3. Drink lots of water

Eight glasses of water a day. Water lubricates the intestines and also moistens the food you eat, aiding its flow through your body.

4. Lose the stress

‘Psychological stress has a huge effect on bowel function. ‘we say the bowel is the little brain of the human body. The brain and bowel are highly interconnected.’ bowel movements depend on intricate signalling between the gut and the brain. When the brain is under stress, the bowel is, too. People who are stressed are less likely to exercise and eat nutritious foods.

5. Stick with a regular routine

Bowel movements occur according to the body’s internal ‘clock.’ when you ignore the urge to go to the bathroom, there’s more time for water to be extracted from the stools into the body, making them harder to pass. (one idea: give yourself enough time to make bowel movements part of your morning at-home routine.)

6. If necessary, use laxatives, but don’t overdo them

Most over-the-counter products are safe to use, as long as you follow package directions. But overuse can make the bowel lazy. For occasional help, there are several laxatives to choose from: bulk-forming osmotic laxatives, help fluids to flow, and stimulate muscles that aid in digestion. Stimulant laxatives, cause muscle contractions in the intestines that are needed to get things moving, and should be used sparingly. At-home enemas can be used in cases of acute constipation. Suppositories may also help.

7. Be prepared for travel

Drinking lots of water and, when eating out, choosing menu items with fruit and vegetables in them. Pack high-fibre foods. And take your running shoes with you, so you can be sure to get that crucial exercise.

You are just 21. These things do not happen at this age. Negativity is the main culprit. You have some questions unanswered and because of that having negative thoughts. Talk of them find solution meanwhile do this. Diet is fresh fruits what ever available and similarly fresh vegetables and one hour of jogging or brisk walking every morning. This will keep you sexually active and fit.

I have tonsils and it occurs after every 2 3 months. What medicine should I take and what precautions should I take to avoid it in future?

DNB (ENT), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Hi Ritu. The best precaution is to avoid consumption of refrigerated food and drinks since these harbour viruses that can cause tonsil infections. It is also a good practice rinse your mouth and throat with a mouthwash before and after any meals. This will reduce the chances of getting a tonsil infection. For an active infection you will need a course of antibiotics which can be prescribed only after examining the tonsils.
