What Are the Affects of Galactosemia In Infants?

Pediatrician,
What Are the Affects of Galactosemia In Infants?

An infant is usually called a bundle of joy and with good reason. There are simple and carefree, and bring a smile to your face with their antics. However, the mood and health of an infant can be tarnished due to an issue which is known as galactosemia.

What is Galactosemia?
When a baby has galactosemia, he or she will have a problem when it comes to digesting galactose, which is something that is present not only in milk but in all milk products. Galactose is a sort of sugar, just like fructose and glucose is. As a matter of fact, lactose, which is what milk has, is, in fact, a combination of glucose and galactose. Also, when lactose is processed, it is broken down by the human body into its constituents.

The condition is something that is passed down through the genes of the parents of the baby. The condition would occur if the gene which causes a tendency for a baby to have galactosemia is present not only in one parent but both of them. A baby who has the condition will be lacking an enzyme which is known as the GALT enzyme. The enzyme could also not be functioning as it should be under normal circumstances.

When it comes to the problem, it is very important, to say the least, to detect it sooner rather than later as if there is a build-up of unprocessed galactose which is allowed to occur, it can affect the baby adversely and in some cases, it can also be threatening to the life of the baby!

How does it affect a baby?
The problems which can erupt due to galactosemia include issues which affect organs such as the brain, eyes, liver and kidneys. It is interesting to take note of the fact that these are all organs which either have something to do either processing the blood or are heavily dependent on it. While a baby is not in the position in which he or she can communicate the issues that are being faced, when keeping an eye out for galactosemia, the signs which are displayed include an irritability of the baby as well as lacking consumption of the milk of the mother.

Even though galactosemia may not be the case, a doctor should be consulted as the exacerbated issue can include seizures and jaundice. It is to be kept in mind that galactose is something that can be found not only in the milk of the cow but also human milk as well as the milk of other animals such as goats. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pediatrician.

I am a mother. My baby having motions problem now. His teeth are growing now. Please suggest the solution.

I am a mother. My baby having motions problem now. His teeth are growing now. Please suggest the solution.
When babies get teeth they have irritation in mouth and to stop that irritation they pick up all objects and place in their mouth leading to infection and eventually vomiting and loose stool. So to prevent this it's better to keep surroundings clean and and babies hands clean. If motions increase consult your doctor for signs of dehydration and medication. Best to start feeds for every episode of loose stool.

Hi want to increase my lactation I am already taking methi water everyday morning. My baby is 2 months and I supplement her with enfamil.

Pediatrician,
You need confedence to feed the child successfully. Lack of faith in self, suspicion reduces milk secretion. Observe weight chart. If it is normal don't worry. Top feeds confuse children and they shift from breastfeeding to formula feeds it's lot more easy.

Yes, you can give now. Some salt of iron may cause constipation. Salt of iron can be changed by your pediatrician.

My daughter is 6 years old she has night bed wetting problem please tell me remedy.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Ghaziabad
Bed wetting can persist in some children for a long time. You have to make changes in her routine. There should be atleast 2-3 hour gap between dinner and bedtime. Do not give any fluids before bedtime. Time when she wets the bed (it usually occurs at a more or less fixed time after sleep), then wake her up just before that time to go the toilet. These simple steps usually help. Follow them and wait.

Ways To Identify Behavioral Problems

Pediatrician, Varanasi
Ways To Identify Behavioral Problems

A pediatrician manages a child's overall physical and psychological health condition. While most parents consult a pediatrician when the child falls sick, they miss the importance of regular visits to the doctor even if the child is seemingly healthy. There are recommended schedules which prescribe regular visits to the doctor from about a week after the birth of the child. The visits are more frequent up till the age of 6 or 7, after which a monthly visit is usually sufficient. The following is a list of reasons why your child should be taken to a pediatrician every month:

1. Documenting the rate of growth
The pediatrician measures the child's weight and height during every visit and charts them. This is important for comparison with the average rate of growth and pin pointing the problems in normal growth (if any) and the reasons for these problems. For example, if a 4 year old girl is in the 80th percentile for height, it means that 80% of the girls her age are shorter than she is and 20% are taller than she is. The rate of growth is an indicator of a child's general health.

2. Detecting deviations in developmental patterns
There are well-defined physical and emotional developmental patterns for children of all ages. For example, a child starts using signals to communicate by 4 months, or starts talking by the age of 2. A pediatrician can spot deviations from the standard patterns better than parents can. Apart from the measurement of height and weight, sometimes hearing, motor skills and vision tests are also conducted on your visit to the pediatrician to ensure that these basic systems and functions are developing properly.

3. Identifying reasons behind behavioral problems
Behavioral issues in children can be caused by a number of reasons - their inability to correctly express physical discomfort, bonding or attachment issues with the parents or caregivers, interactive problems with peers in school etc. Common behavioral problems are snoring, sleep walking, bed wetting, outbursts of anger, lack of social communication etc. The problems can be prevented from becoming complicated conditions if treated early.

4. Prevention of diseases
The schedule for all the required vaccinations is maintained by the pediatrician. Apart from immunization, regular visits to a pediatrician are important for pointing the beginning symptoms of certain diseases. Nutritional deficiencies, which are very common in children, can be diagnosed and addressed before they lead to health problems. Often parents become extremely apprehensive about the child's health- their queries can be answered and their worries can also be put to rest by these visits.

My baby is 4 month old and as he rolling due to pressure on stomach he is vomiting a lot and his toilet is yellowish color proper but doing 3 to 4 times a day little little. Here he is drinking and then rolling and then vomiting. He is not vomiting milk but it's like dahi. Dr. he suggested perinorm 8 drops thrice a day is it safe to give him perinorm as I have read a lot of side effect of perinorm. If not safe then kindly suggest me the substitute for d same.

My baby is 4 month old and as he rolling due to pressure on stomach he is vomiting a lot and his toilet is yellowish ...
This is a normal reflux. Curd like little regurgitation is common while stomach is being pressed. So nothing to worry. We don't prefer perinorm unless there is severe vomits. The signs you mentioned is just a regurgitation. That does not warrant therapy. Do proper burping post feeds. Keep head up position and demoralized prone position for long. Regards.
