I have gap in my teeth. Also my two front teeth are very wide, approx 10.5 to 11mm. My doctor is saying that before going for braces, I should have rct on both teeth and shape it to reduce its width. Is it good to go for rct and alter the natural teeth or should I go for braces without changing width of these two teeth.

Why Flossing Is Important

MDS, BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Why Flossing Is Important

Tooth brushing alone doesn't clean all surfaces of teeth. Around 30% of teeth surface is left untouched. These are the areas between the teeth. Only a floss helps to clean these areas. In patients with gaps between teeth a interdental brush is better.
Learn to floss once a day as it is very important. Gently slip the floss between each tooth and up along the gum line.

Dear Doc I want to use braces on my teeth. Some of my tooth look very uncomfortable. And some of my friends telling that braces will give you pain. And you will be not able to eat your too. Lybrate-user orthodontic treatment is not at all painful except for some discomfort from time to time when there may be adjustments to the wires. You are able to eat practically everything but with some caution so as not to break the braces, which if it happens ends up increasing your treatment time.

Soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices should be consumed in a limited quantity because they are acidic in nature. Acidic food or drinks often soften the tooth material which leads to the dissolution of minerals into the tooth enamel, resulting in cavities (holes).

If you keep your mouth clean after every meal, colgate total is good. Brush twice daily, gargle after every meal with warm water. Get an orthodontic brush for brushing from chemist. That's it. No need to buy expensive paste or mouthrinse.

I've red dot spots on the roof of the mouth and it is irritating with my throat, ears and inside the nose. Please suggest me a medicine.

PG Hom, London, BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Hi Ekam, The commonest cause of the red spots on the roof of the mouth is severe infection in the throat. However it is very necessary to rule out other possibilities for this condition. It will be better if you consult your dentist as some blood tests should ideally be done to find out the reasons for spots.

Dental Tips for Babies

Dental Tips for Babies

All that a Mom should know about oral health care to maintain her baby’s set of Pearly Whites:

Right time to begin brushing baby’s teeth – as soon as the 1st tooth erupts.

  • After feeding use a damp gauze or cloth gently wipe the mouth of any residue left behind.
  • Use either an over finger brush or a soft bristled brush for infants to clean the teeth.
  • Initially use a wet toothbrush and slowly move to kid’s toothpaste.

Choosing a toothpaste for kids –

  • Now a days fluoridated toothpaste for kids in very small quantity i.e rice grain sized is recommended.
  • Watermelon / bubblegum/ strawberry flavours can increase the kid’s interest towards brushing.

Brushing technique –

  • Teach your kids to brush using a small circular motion. Brush twice daily. Make it a game or sing a song to encourage brushing.
  • Toothbrushes are now available with music or lights or cartoon figures to make brushing more fun.

Tips to maintaine good oral hygiene –

  • Apart from brushing it is important to cleanse the mouth in between the meals.
  • Do not put infants to sleep with milk formula or juice as sugary liquids cling to teeth and cause decay.
  • Avoid pacifiers as they change the shape of the mouth and cause improperly placed teeth.
  • After giving medicine or eating sweet like chocolates, ice-cream encourage kids to wash mouth with water and clean with a damp cloth for infants.
  • Get fluoride treatment done every 6 months from dentist for prevention of caries.

Milk teeth are very important -

  • For maintaining the oral health.
  • Also to determine the shape of mouth and alignment of permanent teeth.

Stronger gums keeps your teeth stronger life long.

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Stronger gums keeps your teeth stronger life long.
Brush your teeth twice daily but this is not sufficient it is must to massage your gums after brushing and after each meals. As gums are living tissue when you massage your gums the blood circulation improves and the adoption to teeth becomes better and also soft food remnants which has penetrated after having meals would come out this will not let bacteria growth and prevent gums from inflammation otherwise the food remnants which continues to build up the deposit called plaque which can lead to gingivitis later advance to periodontis wherein the inner supporting bone is destroyed by bacterial deposit surrounding the gum and bone thus weakening the teeth. This bones are shockabsorber as in vehicle's they take up the pressure of chewing food. As you do service to your vehicles similarly this is a daily service in your mouth thus massage your gums after brushing and after each meals you will never have bleeding gums or any kind of chronic infection around gums and teeth, thus teeth remains stronger may be life long. Good oral hygiene means maintains good overall health and keeps your other systemic disease undercontrol.

All children up to three years old, should use a smear of toothpaste
All children up to three years old, should use a smear of toothpaste with a fluoride level of no less than 1000ppm (parts per million).

After three years old, they should use a toothpaste that contains 1350ppm -1500ppm

Most importantly all parents should supervise their children's tooth brushing.

Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently. Regards

Hi Seshuk, The process of filling the gap between teeth is known as orthodontic treatment, wherein you will be required to wear braces (an appliance with wires) for anywhere between 6 months to 1 year, depending upon the exact condition of your teeth. However, this treatment will serve as a permanent solution to your problem. You teeth alignment will become better and your smile will improve, These days, braces, similar to the color of teeth (ceramic braces) have also become available which are potentially much better looking than the conventional silver appliances. Hope that helps.

Increase dietary intake of vitamin B, folic acid, iron and use of vitamin supplements etc under medical supervision if blood tests confirm low concentrations • institute topical antifungal therapy if fungal plaques noticed Mouth sores are common and rarely Cause complications. Most go away in about a week, but it’s important to monitor any mouth sores you develop. If you are concerned, or if the sore doesn’t seem to be healing, contact your dentist.

Also check out whether you have any deep cavities becoz sometimes food gets impacted in deep cavities may also causes bad breath. Brush your teeth twice daily and use a mouth wash for gargling If still your problem persists check you have any digestion problem.
