Our teeth perform the most important function - of chewing food. If they are used for other purposes such as cracking nuts, removing bottle tops or ripping open packaging, it can lead to chipped or broken teeth.

Why Tooth Picking Is Bad for Oral Health
A lot of people love to use tooth picks in order to clear out food stuck in their teeth after meals. Some people even consider to do it as a habit that they will use it, even if they no longer have to. These people do not know that there are possible hazards to using it. In order to convince them to avoid using tooth picks, here are 5 reasons why it is bad for oral health.
It can be a source of oral infections. In fact, it could also be a reason for a person to acquire more severe oral discomforts such as mouth cancer. Keep in mind that tooth picks are never sterile as they are only be stored on tables and closets kept inside their boxes or cases. It would never be ideal to put such thing inside your mouth for health reasons.
Constant tooth picking can break the enamel of your teeth. The enamel which is a hard yet thin layer covering the crown of a tooth is a vital tissue as it serves as the main protection or coat of the tooth. Due to its thinness, it can easily break this tissue given that tooth picks are made up of hard substance. Once the user applies pressure on the tooth, the enamel will easily break off of it. Just imagine all of the damage your teeth enamel has taken so far if you are using it three times a day.
It can be damaging to the gums. Whenever a person is using tooth picks, it is inevitable for them to sometimes hit their gums with it. Worse is when they apply too much pressure and they would accidentally have their gums wounded. If you have wounded or damaged gums, the chances of being able to acquire diseases would be higher most especially if the gums become infected. This is why most dentists advise their patients and clients to use dental flossers instead as they are proven to be more safe

Dear dr, I am 40 years old and have 3 milk teeth at lower jaw and 1 at upper. I seen a dentist recently and after x-ray he found 4 original teeth inside the chin. As such I don' t have any pain or other problem. Any suggestion?

Milk are supposed to be exfoliated at the age of 7 to 8 yrs as it is the age for permanent tooth to erupt. You have over retained teeth.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with surgical procedures or artificial enamel filling or root canal treatment. You may consult me in person too. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

Sir, I am filling sensitivity in my teeth from five to seven days when I am eating the food. So what I needs to good comfortable?

Salt is one of the fundamental dental cleansing agents that has been used for ages. It helps replenish lost mineral content in the teeth and helps revive their white color. You can use common salt regularly each morning as a tooth powder instead of toothpaste. Another option is to mix common salt with charcoal and brush your teeth with it regularly. You can also mix common salt with baking soda and gently rub it on your teeth.

"For How long a patient has to wear plates to keep the changes in teeth remains , if his/her teeths gets proper in shape and the spaces are disappeared after wearing plates for 2 years " and yet the patient sees a very little spaces to appear when he stop using plates. ???

PG Fellowship In Microdentistry, BDS
Dentist, Thane
It depends on the reason for which you are wearing the plates(reason for which the orthodontic treatment is done). It has to be worn for a period of 1 year but it varies on case to case. if u see the spaces appearing again you can go for a permanent lingual retainers to stablize the teeth which will be of a great help. If you are a tobacco user or paan chewer you could be having oral submucous fibrosis. If you are not then it is mostly because of your third molar (wisdom tooth) causing trismus. Kindly get a consultation.

To lessen the degree of pain or soreness in the mouth during the orthodontic treatment, you can gargle with 8 ounces of lukewarm water with one teaspoonful of salt dissolved in it. Swish it around your mouth and then spit it out. It will dull the pain and provide relief.

Tips for Selecting Proper Toothbrush – By Dr. Bharat Katarmal – A Dentist at Jamnagar
It's important for overall health to choose a brush that gets your mouth clean and keeps it healthy. Toothbrush is the principal and most important instrument to clean teeth.

You know that market is flooded with so many types of toothbrush in various colors, type, shape and size. Some toothbrush brands promise fresh breath, deep cleaning and even teeth whitening, those makes people more confused, and make shopping of toothbrush challenge.

There are, however, some toothbrush basics that you need to know. Here are some tips about selecting proper toothbrush.

Size of Toothbrush
The best toothbrush head allow you easy access to all surfaces of your teeth. For most adults, toothbrushes head a half-inch wide and one-inch tall will be the easiest to use and the most effective. There are also larger toothbrush heads available, but they are difficult to use to clean certain areas, such as the sides and backs of your molars. The toothbrush should have a long enough handle so you can comfortably hold it in your hand. The best toothbrush is one that fits your mouth and allows you to reach all teeth surfaces easily.

Bristle variety of Toothbrush
This is the most important point in selecting toothbrush. There are so many varieties of bristle type ranging from hard, medium, soft and ultra soft. Some people use the hardest bristles as they believe that it can achieve a better clean, but these can be having a negative impact on their teeth and gums. It has been shown that the harder bristles can cause premature gum recession and wear facets (Abrasion, Toothbrush trauma) on the teeth. For these reasons we recommend using the soft bristles as they achieve the good result with minimum trauma to the teeth and gums. A soft-bristled brush is best for removing plaque and debris from teeth. The soft-bristled toothbrush will be the most comfortable and safest choice. They are easier on your gums. When you brush, you want to clean your teeth, not make your gums bleed. A toothbrush with hard bristles is more likely to cause bleeding gums. Depending on how vigorously you brush your teeth and the strength of your teeth, medium and hard bristled brushes could actually damage the gums, root surface, and protective tooth enamel. For even more tooth protection when you brush, be sure the bristles on the toothbrush you select have rounded tips. The thin bristles tips are able to enter and sweep food particles from along the gum line and between narrower gaps between the teeth. The ultra soft bristled toothbrush mainly used after gum surgery specially recommended by dentists.
Remember: The Softest the better.

Don't forget: After daily use, your toothbrush can lose its effectiveness; its bristles become hard and even become a breeding ground for germs, fungus and bacteria. For that reason toothbrush should be replaced 3 monthly. If you recently had a cold or infection, you may have transferred germs to your toothbrush so be sure to use a new toothbrush.

Don’t Miss the Dental Visits
Brushing teeth is an essential part of daily routine, but remember that regular dental visits are most important to the overall dental health. By visiting dentist twice a year for checkups and dental cleanings, and learning how to brush properly, you will definitely enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime.
At Dr. Bharat Katarmal Dental and Implant Clinic, Jamnagar, we aim to identify, treat, and educate our patients on the best oral hygiene techniques to help maintain their own oral health at home.
