My mother have elbow pain. What should I do for her?
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There could be many causes of pain in the elbow region. Depending upon the site, it could be either epicondylitis, olecranon bursitis etc. Can you please tell me whether there is any swelling, skin redness or any other s/s of inflammation like local warmth etc apart from pain? what are the medications she is taking or has previously taken as a part of long term management? do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

How can a person with arthritis cope with it? How to get rid of rheumatoid arthritis. Please help.

DM - Rheumatology, MD - General Medicine
Rheumatologist, Mumbai
Ra is one of the most treatable arthritis currently and you should consult a rheumatologist if possible in person who are specialised at treating diseases like ra. The therapy of ra has advanced if you continue to get substandard treatment all your joints will get destroyed and you won't be able to reverse that. Also ra is a disease which can affect multiple systems and potentially life threatening. Its a misconception that ayurvedic drugs in ra have no side effects. Following are issues with it 1) most so called ayurveda specialists give you powder which are unlabelled which basically can be steroids/allopathy, you can never tell the difference 2) ayurveda drugs contain gold and lead (for which maggi was banned) both of which can have serious side effects 3) gold tablet are still used in allopathy outside india but they are used as last resort, not as first drug unlike ayurved 4) allopathic rheumatologists, treat ra to an extent so that all symptoms go away, they try to give you medicines with monitoring and avoiding side effects 5) most ayurvedic specialists take allopathy when they have ra.

Dear lybrate user, a few simple changes and precautions at home can help reduce the pain in your heels.Use an ice pack to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Rest your feet by staying off of them as much as possible for a few days when your heels are aching. Exercise your feet. Some good foot flexing and stretches can help stretch out the plantar fascia, and make it feel better. You can get more information about stretching .Adjust your shoes with inserts that raise the heel and support the arch of your foot. please send feed back.

Gentle massage over knees with lukewarm herbal pain relieving oils daily for about 15-20 minutes and hot fomentation afterwards will greatly help in subsiding the pain. These procedures would give strength to your knee and reduce the pain and stiffness. Regular oiling the joint will improve the lubrication also. Use knee caps over the joints and avoid over exertion of the joint. This will greatly help. Although some herbal medicines might also help you but after proper history taking. Please update with your valuable feedback after 15 days.\

Try few things for your back pain: - Apply Ice and Heat Heating pads and cold packs can comfort tender trunks. Most doctors recommend using ice for the first 48 hours after an injury -- particularly if there is swelling — and then switching to heat. You can use whichever you find comforting as long as your skin is protected. - Limit Bed Rest Studies show that people with short-term low-back pain who rest feel more pain and have a harder time with daily tasks than those who stay active. -Keep Exercising Activity is often the best medicine for back pain. Simple exercises like walking can be very helpful. But remember to move in moderation, Stay away from strenuous activities like gardening and avoid whatever motion caused the pain in the first place. -Maintain Good Posture most people have poor posture when going about their daily activities, putting unnecessary strain on their backs. -Strengthen Your Core Most people with chronic back pain would benefit from stronger abdominal muscles. If the abdominals are weak, other areas must pick up the slack. When we strengthen the abdominals, it often reduces the strain on the lower back. - Improve Flexibility Too much tension and tightness can cause back pain. By increasing flexibility you need to put an equal load throughout the body from the feet all the way up to the head. -Sleep the Right Way The amount of rest you get is important, and so is the position you get it in. Sleeping in a bad position or on a mattress without support can cause back pain. Back sleepers should put pillows under their knees. Side sleepers should place pillows between their knees to keep their spine in a neutral position. Stomach sleeping causes the neck and head to twist and can put undue stress on the back. -Use Relaxation Techniques Research shows that practices such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga, which help put the mind at rest, can do wonders for the back. -See a Specialist Developing an individualized exercise plan is essential to managing chronic back pain. Some patients need more core strengthening while others benefit mainly from stretching and improving flexibility. Please consult a Orthopedic Physiotherapist for the right exercise plan. Best wishes.

Orthopedist,
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. If your condition does not improve, then we will have to get certain investigations done. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Treatment of frozen shoulder

BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Pune
Treatment of frozen shoulder
Treatment of frozen shoulder varies depending on the stage it is at, and how severe is the pain and stiffness. There is no outright cure and the aim of treatment is to keep the joint as mobile as possible. The most effective treatment is that which maintains a good range of movement until the shoulder starts to heal.

Treatment may Include the following:

1. Shoulder exercises: Regular, gentle exercise can help to keep the shoulder joint mobile. If your shoulder is very stiff, exercise may hurt, and it should only be carried out with the guidance of your doctor or physiotherapist. If you are able to, continue using your shoulder as normal saving' the shoulder can cause the muscle to waste and may make stiffness worse.
2. Painkillers: Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or prescription-only drugs such as codeine may be taken to ease pain and you should discuss this with your general physician or pharmacist.
3. Anti-inflammatory painkillers: Such as ibuprofen and diclofenac, are often prescribed to ease pain and inflammation. Any medication that you take should be discussed with your general physician or pharmacist.
4. Steroid injections into or near the shoulder joint may be effective at relieving pain and inflammation for a few weeks. However, injections are not a cure, and symptoms may return.
