Should You Get a Mammogram?

MHA, PGDPMC, DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Should You Get a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an imaging test where an X-ray is taken to recreate the internal imagery of your breasts. This is a screening test that is widely used to find the earliest signs of cancer. There have been instances where the early signs of cancer have been found up to three years before the actual development of the same. There are a number of benefits and risks in this screening method. So let us find out more about getting a mammogram, and whether or not you should get one.

  • Procedure: A special X-ray machine is used for conducting a mammogram. There is a clear plastic plate on which the specialist will place the breast while another plate will press on the breast from above. While both the plates serve to flatten the breast and hold it still, the X-ray will be taken. Some pressure will be felt and the same steps will be repeated so as to get the side view of the breasts. The same procedure will be repeated for the other breast. Meanwhile, once it is done, you will need to wait so that the technician can check for clarity, and whether or not the procedure needs to be done again. The results of this procedure cannot be relayed by the technician, and all the images will be different because all breasts are slightly different from each other.
  • Preparation: You will need to remember that the process can be a slightly painful one, especially once the pressure gets applied. Many women complain of discomfort and pain. Yet, this discomfort gets over before you know it. The pressure and pain will depend on the size of your breasts and how much they will have to be pressed in order to get a picture. The skill of the technician will also come into play here. One must remember not to get this procedure done a week or so before or after the menstrual cycle, as the breasts tend to be tender around this time, and the pain will be much more.
  • Radiologist: Within a few weeks after the procedure, the radiologist will usually deliver the result. This is the professional who does an accurate reading of the X-ray.
  • Normal and Abnormal Readings: If your mammogram result has a normal reading, then you can resort to getting one done every once in a while. But an abnormal reading will require further X-ray and tests so as to be able to tell for sure.
  • Why should I get one: If you are over 40 and have a family history of such ailments, then you will have to get a mammogram done regularly. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Yes you can get pregnant despite free fluid in pouch of Douglas which indicates internal infections, curable though and can't affect the growing baby. Take a course of safer antibiotics now as suggested by your doctor if you get pregnant, may be the next ultrasound shows no fluid, means no infections antibiotics before pregnancy are a lot safer compared to antibiotics during pregnancy.

Patience is the key. It took nine months for your tummy muscles to stretch to accommodate a full-term baby. So it makes sense that it can take that long, or longer, to tighten up again. The speed and degree of this tightening up depends on a few factors, including: • What shape and size you were before you conceived your baby. • How much weight you gained during pregnancy. • How active you are. • Something you can't do anything about: your genes. You may find it easier to shed the weight if: • You gained less than 13.6kg and exercised regularly during pregnancy. • You breastfeed. • This is your first baby. NOTE you shouldn't aim to be back to your pre-pregnancy weight until about six months after your baby's birth. Homoeopathic mediccine toincrease your Breast Milk MILKOSAN or BOOUME 44 SYRUP ( BIOFORCE) Drink 1 poon 3-4 times daily.

Abdominal pain is a common side effect of the tablet. Try stopping the tablet and see if the pain reduces. If your doctor prescribed the tablet you should check up because long term use of these tablets can cause serious health issues.

Anemia (Low Haemoglobin)

If you have anemia, your blood does not carry enough oxygen to the rest of your body. The most common cause of anemia is not having enough iron. Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives the red color to blood. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Anemia has three main causes: blood loss, lack of red blood cell production, and high rates of red blood cell destruction.

Conditions that may lead to anemia include

Anemia can make you feel tired, cold, dizzy, and irritable. You may be short of breath or have a headache.

Your doctor will diagnose anemia with a physical exam and blood tests. Treatment depends on the kind of anemia you have.

Hello- irregular periods and pain might be due to low blood volume and iproper tone of uterine muscles. Try this- 1) eat figs daily with milk. 2) increase the amount of dairy products in your meals. 3) avoid fast foods and spicy diet specially during the menses time. 4) use shatavari powder with milk daily.

You can report to a govt facility to take emergency dose of anti HIV meds. Also, get yourself checked for HIV, HBsAg, anti HCV. Repeat these tests after 3 months. If you develop symptoms like ulcer, rash, swelling in groin, fever, see your doctor immediately. It's the best not to indulge in high risk sexual behaviour.

In 19 weeks Ultrasound scan shows left CPC in foetus brain. Is it normal? Please advise

M.D.(radiodiagnosis & imaging)

In 19 weeks Ultrasound scan shows left CPC in foetus brain. Is it normal? Please advise
CPC can be found on one side or both in brain. Regardless of number, size or shape they are harmless. Generally they disappear around 27-29 weeks of fetal age. So nothing to worry as such if it's an isolated finding. If there are other problems seen along with CPC in fetus then consult your treating doctor.
