Both medicines should not be used either individual or in combination. Paracetamol is safer. These medicines are not useful in cough or cold unless there is fever.

Swelling In Groin In Kids - What Should You Do To Treat It?

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Swelling In Groin In Kids - What Should You Do To Treat It?

Sometimes, the groin and scrotum swell due to the buildup of water like fluid in one or both the testicles. This is known as hydrocele. This condition is not at all painful, but can be uncomfortable at times. In newborn babies, there is an opening between the abdomen and the scrotum; it naturally closes with the passage of time, therefore it’s generally nothing to worry about.

Symptoms of hydrocele:

  1. Scrotum can get enlarged at times

  2. Swelling and redness are common in hydrocele

  3. Also, pressure can be felt at the base of your child’s penis

  4. Pain doesn’t normally occur but in some cases, might occur as your child gets older

How does in occur in babies?

When you are in the last stage of your pregnancy, the baby’s testicles descend from its abdomen to the scrotum. So the fluid in the sac stays within the scrotum and the opening closes naturally after some time.

Can it be treated?

This condition is not usually hazardous to health and is treated usually, if there is immense pain. It can also cut out the blood supply; in this case, it has to be treated as soon as possible. If your child experiences such symptoms, you should take him to a doctor for a physical examination. During this examination, the doctor will shine light near the scrotum.

If it appears as a solid mass, then the assumption is that there is no watery fluid; hence, hydrocele has not occurred. There is a procedure in which the hydrocele is burst open with a small needle, but sometimes, it might relapse. In such a case, surgery is the only reliable option. These symptoms can also persist if your child is diagnosed with hernia. Hence, in such a situation, a surgery would solve both the conditions.

After DPT vaccination fever of my 3.5 months old baby weighing 5.9 kg raised to 101. Dr. Asked to give 2 ml of ibugesic plus as fever was not dropping with other paracetamol syrup. I have given him 2 ml but now I have read on internet Ibugesic plus is not safe for infants below 1 year. I am very much worried will it harm my baby as I have given him single dose.

Unfortunately what you have read is partially correct. Active ingredients of ibugesic plus are paracetamol and ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is licensed for use even in premature babies. Please discuss your concerns with your doctor.

Can I give PRESTILIVE-DS suspension to my 3 years old baby as he is not eating anything and if I force him he starts potty.

Can I give PRESTILIVE-DS suspension to my 3 years old baby as he is not eating anything and if I force him he starts ...
NO. Its not only irresponsible but actually negligent to give a child medications without finding out causes for his/her problems. Children have only two ways to express discomfort- crying or not eating. Its a sign of something that needs attention. Please see a local Pediatrician/Child Specialist in person.

Hello doctors
My baby in six month & we have started DAAL WATER.
Request pls confirm whether we can add CURD in daily...
Please use home cooked semi solids like sooji, daliya, khichdi, daal chhaval, etc. Daal pani has no nutritional value so don't use it similarly fruit juices are not recommended, use mashed fruits. Add oil or ghee in diet to increase taste and caloric value, curd you can use it. Is very good for everyone.

Breastfeeding - Can It Lower The Risk Of Breast Cancer?

MD - General Medicine, D.M. Medical oncology

Breastfeeding - Can It Lower The Risk Of Breast Cancer?

Women love the fact that breastfeeding can safeguard them from general illnesses such as cold and fever. However, there is a bigger pie to cheer about. Apparently, it has been found that breastfeeding can lower the risk of breast cancer as well. Not to forget, breastfeeding is extremely crucial for a baby. It can help him/her to increase immunity and stay away from major diseases.

Facts from major studies:

  1. A study published in the Lancet, 2002 showed that women who breastfeed for 12 months at a stretch can reduce the chances of breast cancer by a good 4.3 percent compared to the ones who did not breastfeed. The study was performed on over 1,50,000 women and brought enough substance to the theory.
  2. A study conducted on 60,000 women and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that a woman who has a family history of breast cancer can mitigate the risk of breast cancer, if she breastfed before her menopause.
  3. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that women from African ancestry often develop an acute form of cancer known as the estrogen receptor-negative and triple-negative. Breastfeeding can significantly hedge the risk of developing this form of breast cancer.
  4. A collaborative study published in Annals of Oncology, a famous journal, reported that the chances of developing hormone-receptor negative breast cancer can be negated by 20 percent if a woman breastfed before her menopause.

How does breastfeeding reduce the risk of cancer?
Some researches suggest that women who breastfeed get fewer menstrual cycle compared to the ones who do not. This means low exposure to estrogen for breastfeeding women. It is a common knowledge that estrogen can fuel breast cancer. There is a second theory that suggests that breastfeeding makes the cells of the breasts more resistive to mutation. Therefore, the breast can block cancer.
There is the other factor of lifestyle changes. Women tend to do away with drinking, smoking, eating junk food, and leading an undisciplined life. Once these are given up and replaced with healthy lifestyle practices, the chances of breast cancer automatically come down.

How long should one breastfeed to refrain from breast cancer?
There is no concrete answer to this question. Most studies show that longer the duration of breastfeeding, lower the chances of breast cancer. But, in general, a year of breast feeding is a safe number and can reduce the chance of breast cancer by almost 20 percent, as revealed by many studies. If, however, a woman fails to breastfeed, there is no need to stress. A healthy lifestyle can go a long way in surviving breast cancer.

Injections are to make lungs more mature in those who are going to deliver prematurely. However final answer can not be given as I don't know your due date.
