Child Development and Behavior

Behavior of a child should always be closely monitored during his/her early development. Sometimes signs of several personality disorders tend to show up early in life. Proper monitoring of the child's behavior helps to identify the signs and properly diagnose the condition if the child is suffering from any potential personality disorder.

Here are a few facts you should keep in mind:

1. You might often find it difficult to differentiate between the normal and abnormal behavior of your child. You might consult the pediatrician in this case to compare the child's general behavioral patterns with that of other children in the same age group.

2. It is very important to understand your child's development process. It helps you to interpret his/her behavior and to identify signs of personality disorder.

3. There are a few common behavior patterns, which tend to act as a guide to understanding the behavior of your child. Some of these patterns should be encouraged as they lead to proper behavioral development of your child while patterns of negative behavior should be discouraged.

4. You should also consult a doctor if your child shows negative behavior persistently even after disciplining measures.

5. Being polite, doing chores on a regular basis, following instructions should be encouraged and rewarded as it helps in the proper personality development of your child.

6. Behavioral patterns like an inclination towards defensive, regressive and aggressive behavior should not be encouraged but can be tolerated in certain situations like illness or in times of stress.

7. Behavioral patterns like an increased inclination to violence or an excessive competitive attitude towards their siblings should never be allowed.

8. Prejudice or racism, stealing or inclination towards substance abuse, angry outbursts point towards problems in the child's mental, physical or social well-being. You are also advised to take your child to a psychological expert to find out whether he/she is suffering from any sort of behavioral disorder.

9. Your behavior also plays a major role in development of your child and his/her behavioral patterns. It is often seen that if a child is subjected to excessive physical, mental or emotional abuse or is engaged in too many curricular and extracurricular activities, he/she is likely to develop several behavioral disorders over time.

Indian average weight at 5 years is 15 kgs. 80% and above is considered as normal. Nowadays we don't recommend children to have more weight as it may lead to long term complications like diabetes. Give him for worms and nutritious diet with good amount of proteins.

Study Smarter and Not Harder!

There are few things I hear over and over again from students -

How they are studying for so many in a day
How they do not have even time for anything else in their life due to study pressure
How they are sleep deprived
How much they are stressed
And finally, after all the sacrifices and hard work, their exam performance is not what they expect.
Here are few tips to study smart, improve your grades and yet have a life!

We all know that 2 hours of focused study will be much more productive than 4 hours of distracted study.

And the good news is that concentration is a mental skill that you can develop and improve.
There are two ways to improve your concentration:

First, work on raising your brain's natural ability to concentrate or in other words, learn to increase your attention span.

Second, adjust the environment around you to make concentrating easier.

Improving your concentration takes a little time and effort, but it is worth it. In my personal experience with students, I have seen noticeable improvement in relatively short time.

Ideas for daily concentration-boosting habits include:

Mindfulness meditation - many studies confirm that 20 minutes of meditation or more per day improves concentration and attention span. Mindfulness meditation, where one focuses on one's breathing, is one of the simplest way of meditation. Start with ten minutes in the morning and ten minutes before bed. To begin with you may try a guided meditation. One can easily find audios for guided meditation online.

Proper sleep -I am sorry to say this. Pulling all nighters will not help with your grade. Unless you are getting sufficient restful sleep, you are not going to be as mentally focused as you could be to study as well as answer questions in exams.

Food for your Brain - The more you use certain skills, the more they are reinforced in the brain. So it makes sense that playing concentration games and games that require you to focus will improve your concentration ability. You need to be consistent in this. Play for about 10 to 20 minutes each day. Have fun, and get the benefits but remember not to spend more than 20 minutes a day. Your goal is to improve your concentration and not just keep scoring higher in the game! Try Lumocity and use only free version this will help you restrict your daily play time to 20 minutes and have maximum benefit.

Eat healthier - your brain needs the proper nutrients to allow you to focus. Eat more vegetables and fruits and avoid consumption of junk food as much as possible. Instead you could keep some nuts such as walnuts, almond or peanuts as in between munches. Lot of research has now proven that sugar is very harmful for our health. Reduce sugar and refined white flour in your diet as much as you could.

Exercise - is helpful in both reducing stress and increasing energy and focus. At least 20 minutes a day would go a long way. Going for a short jog of 20 minutes will make next 4-5 hours of study very efficient.

Optimize your mental state and environment:

In addition to building the habits described above into your daily routine; also adjust your environment and your current mental state to improve your concentration when studying.

Create a study space - Your brain loves routine. Create a place where all you do is study. An obvious choice is a secluded desk of some kind, but the trick is to make sure you only study in that spot. Studying in bed is a bad habit, for example, because your body is trained to want to sleep once you get into bed.

Remove distractions - Turn off the ringer on your phone and take other steps to prevent interruptions. Don't study with the television on or with radio playing. Some studies have shown that soft instrumental music (no vocals) can help improve your concentration.

Reduce background noises - If you have to study or work in an environment where it is too loud (classroom or open space) or too quiet (such as at home or at a library) you can get easily distracted by outside influences. With the right amount of background noise you can actually block out distractions and enhance your creative thinking.

Use timer - Set a time limit when you need to study new material. For example, let's say you want to read one chapter in a book (and remember it). Decide in advance that you can have 45 minutes to read the chapter, and 15 minutes to review it. Set a timer to keep yourself honest, then pace yourself to keep within the allotted time.

Stay motivated - If you see studying as burden, it's hard to concentrate. One way to stay motivated is to set up a reward system. Tell yourself you have to earn that hour of watching your favorite show later in the evening by first completing 2-3 hours of intense studying.
That way, even if the material is dry, you have the reward to look forward to.

Take breaks - Take a break every two hours. You mental energy will begin to decline after a long period of study. So every two hours or so, take a ten minute break. Walk around, eat a light snack, or just stare at the wall to relax your mind.
Concentrating is the first step to learning anything new. It only makes sense that if you improve your concentration, your memory will improve also.

How can I help?

If you want to get individualized expert opinion about how you are studying currently and what ways you can improve; book an audio consultation with me. Once I know what your current study methods are, I will be able to give you specific tips to improve upon. Most likely once you incorporate my tips you will be spending less time studying and your grades will improve. That's what is studying smarter and not harder means!!

Hello, I gave birth via c sec ; days back.I get breast milk but irrespective of how much time i give feed he is not satisfied and top feed needs to be given. Please help me?

One should give exclusive breast feed to baby till 6mth of age. Milk production is a reflex process, more suking at breast will produce more milk. If u give top feed, baby will stop sucking at breast and milk production will decrease. So avoid top milk and give more of breast milk.

Hello Doctors Team, My son born on 10-APR-2016 with 34 weeks 6 days with weight of 1.96 kg, and as on today his weight is 2.9 kg and we have doubt like he is taking enough milk or not through breast feeding and also we need to know how to find out the difference because after breast feeding also he is crying some time so we are giving around 30 to 40 ml powder milk. So can anyone suggest, can we go with same ways of feeding or only we can with Mother feeding and also request to share the correct milk powder for additional usage for the current stage. Thanks.

Baby's stomach capacity grows with each day. If the baby is fed enough milk, he or she should stop crying. Although for any reason the baby will cry, you need to check other reasons aswell. Like passage of stools, urine, gas in stomach etc. If there is proper weight gain, sleeps well, passing adequate quantity and quality of stools and urine, one need not use formula milk. Formula is for mothers who really have documented low milk output or their milk aint enough for twins or triplets. Mother's milk is the best always.

So many problems: Your son has iron, vit C and protein deficiency. These days food alone is not sufficient, we have to give some supplements if we want to be perfectly fit. You have protein, vit B complex and fibre deficiency. You have to eat every 3 hours food including more fibre, sprouts, whole grains, 3-4 fruits, 6-7 veg including raw veg as salads, skim milk & curd etc and 1 hour exercise like gyming, brisk walking, sports, running, swimming, yoga, cycling, etc

Ideally child should entirely breast fed for the 1st 6 months. However if mothers milk is insufficient and cow's milk or formula feeds is started then. You can try small portion of ripe and mashed banana, chikoo, mango. Pears should be cooked and mashed.

Crying child is not necessarily hungry, no mother will wait to feed till child becomes hungry. We must understand that cry is the expression of emotional need most often than not, perticularly if child is putting on weight normally. So we must assure the child by talking to him ,rocking him. It is important to note children however small they are, understand facial expressions, tender touch, soft voice and careing look. These all are languages (nonverbal) of love and affection, which every child knows very well.

My relative has a 14 year old boy. He is suffering from urine fall on bed in night. Kindly resolve the problem.

Firstly urine r/e to be done to find out any evidence of infection. If urine examination is alright then see nearly at what time child passes urine on bed. Try to ask him to pass urine about half an hour before. In that way he will develop gradual bladder control. Pt. Need psychological support also. He is not to be felt let down if happens to pass urine on bed. Rather make him assure that nothing has happened wrong, you will be alright if you follow the above given advice. If still problem is not solved then medicines are to be given-like adiuretin nasal spray as per advice from doctor.
