You can take Ultrasonic therapy in one of the nearby physiotherapy clinics which would help to heal the damaged cartilages along with shortwave diathermy which would help to improve the blood circulation.

Hi. I have gone through a total hip replacement caused due to an accident. Its been an year now i have a discharge at times coming from the operated leg. How soon this should be treated and what are the complications?

Orthopedist, Chennai
If the wound is still discharging, then it's not good news. Tests need to be done to know if the hip replacement is infected. If confirmed, then the only way of controlling the infection is to remove the implants. Once infection is controlled, a revision hip can be done.

This could be due to lumbar spondylosis with nerve root compression. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Any way take paracetamol 250mg od & sos you will need other supportive medicines also. Do back (spine) exercises contact me again if need be. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take you may have to use lumbosacral support for some time. Avoid painful act/activities. Keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

What Problems Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Can Tackle?

MBBS, D - Orho
Orthopedist, Ahmedabad
What Problems Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Can Tackle?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a highly effective and innovative treatment option in a variety of fields, from urology to cosmetology as well as orthopedics. This is a non-invasive method that employs high-energy shockwaves to bring about the healing of the affected tissues. It has been found to provide good results for recalcitrant orthopaedic problems like frozen shoulder to certain chronic degenerative or tendon conditions such as Achilles tendinitis (injury of the Achilles' tendon due to overuse) and plantar fasciitis in the heel pain.

How does it work?

The procedure is basically an outpatient or day care job. It involves an application of a non-invasive probe to the affected tissue. This is followed by the external generation of shockwaves focused on the target area. The shockwaves cause a force to be created that brings about healing. Although it's still not clear as to why this kind of therapy works, the dominant understanding is that shockwaves render an improvement in the flow of blood so as to promote the body to fix and heal itself.

Depending on individual cases, high or low energy waves may be employed. While pain may occur during the transmission of high energy waves and would require short general anaesthesia, low-energy ESWT is carried out without anesthesia.

What problems can this form of therapy effectively tackle?

ESWT can be used to treat a number of musculoskeletal disorders. From plantar fasciitis (heel pain), tennis elbow, shoulder rotator cuff, degenerated tendons (Achilles' tendon) to hip and knee pain, the therapy has been found to reduce pain as well as accelerate healing in individuals.

Complications are very rare, with this therapy. Individuals who suffer from hypersensitivity or poor sensation in the affected area are usually not recommended this procedure. Even individuals with heart conditions, seizures and open sores need to consult a doctor before going forward with the therapy.

The therapy has also been found to be very effective in bone healing as well as treatment of bone necrosis (a disease that occurs due to permanent or temporary loss of blood flow to the bones). Additionally in place of surgery, ESWT may also be a valuable option for non-healing fractures. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an orthopedist.

Hello, it is natural to get belly fat when you are on complete bed rest. -drink warm water instead of cold. -drink warm water with lemon every morning, -cut your daily calorie intake by 25% in a way that your body does not feel weak.(example, make healthy substitutes for unhealthy snacks or eat steamed rice instead of pulav etc.) -do kapal bhati for ten minutes every evening, it comes under pranayam, is a breathing process that will help you loose belly fat.

My left arm is painful from 3-4 days it come and go often and feel heart burn feelings. I have acidity problem so is the heart burn is due to acidity or do I have some other problem?

My left arm is painful from 3-4 days it come and go often and feel heart burn feelings. I have acidity problem so is ...
At your age the probability of cardiac pain is less and is more due to other reasons. Cardiac pain generally gets manifest and aggravated by physical exertion and relieved at rest. Confusing Cardiac pains with acidity and heart burn is a common mistake made by lay people. Hyperacidity is generally associated with upper abdominal discomfort and burning sensation in midline which is distinct from cardiac pain that is a compressive feeling in the chest and may also be felt in other parts like left arm, shoulder, below lower jaw, back. Cardiac pains may also present with sweating, giddiness, difficulty in breathing. It is better to seek immediate qualified medical opinion instead of wasting precious time in self diagnosis.
