Your abdominal muscles are weak at that particular area and lifting heavy weight can prove fatal. So avoid lifting heavy weight in future.Otherwise there is no any problem right now.

I am 42 year old women ,I have back pain from last 1 year, after MRI doctor tell me gap between L4& L5 increase and tell me I need an immediate surgery what can I do. And how much cost that's type of operation, or is there any risk factor, pls answer me.

MBBS, DNB - Orthopedics, Fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine
Orthopedist, Bangalore
Please don't jump to surgery. Please take muscle relaxant and pain killer and do Physiotherapy. Back pain has many causes. The only indication for surgery with back pain is radiating pain down the legs, numbness or decreased sensation in legs or feet or muscle weakness or bowel or bladder disturbance. If you don't have any of the above please please avoid surgery. Please contact if you have any doubt or need to more details.

Causes of Spondylitis - How Can it Be Treated?

MBBS, Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), DNB - Orthopedics, mch

Causes of Spondylitis - How Can it Be Treated?

If you suffer from persistent backaches and neck pain, you may be diagnosed with spondylitis. Spondylitis refers to degenerative changes of the spine, such as the formation of bone spurs and degeneration of spinal discs. This condition can affect the neck, upper or mid back and lower back. Of these, spondylitis of the neck- cervical spondylitis and lower back- lumbar spondylitis are most common.

Spondylitis is considered to be triggered by age. As a person grows older, the wear and tear of the bones and ligaments of the spinal column can lead to the development of bone spurs and osteoarthritis. Age can also cause the discs between vertebrae to weaken and degenerate leading to bulging discs and herniating spinal discs. Most people experience the first symptoms of spondylitis between the age of 20 and 50. A family history of spondylitis and being prone to injuries also increases a person’s risk of suffering from spondylitis.

Since spondylitis is a degenerative disease, there is no cure for this condition. However, the pain associated with it can be managed. Thus, treatment for spondylitis is very similar to treatment for neck or back pain. This treatment can be in the form of pain medication, exercise, physical therapy and minimally invasive surgery. Depending on the extent of spinal damage the doctor may prescribe steroids that need to be injected directly into the intervertebral spaces. This is also known as epidural injections.

Spondylitis patients are often advised to follow their normal schedule and refrain from bed rest as this can prolong recovery. However, at the same time, you should not undertake any activity that puts additional pressure or stress on the spinal column. Alternating between warm and cold compresses can help relieve the pain associated with spondylitis. Additionally, try sleeping with a pillow between your legs to relieve low back pain.

Special pillows that offer cervical support can help relieve spondylitis of the neck.

Surgery may be considered in cases where this condition causes or worsens nerve damage. Spinal decompression surgery involves relieving pressure on the nerves in the spinal column that may be caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or foraminal stenosis. This surgery can be performed through a laminectomy, discectomy or foraminotomy. Bone spurs in the spinal column or a vertebral disc can also be removed surgically. However, these surgeries are rarely performed as most patients respond well to non-surgical treatments.

Hi Cervical spondylosis c4c5c6. And with symptoms numbness in right shoulder and tingling in fingers.

DNHE, BPTh/BPT, weight management specialist
Physiotherapist, Kolkata
There can be nerve compression at c4-c6 level, so best would be take physiotherapy treatment for 14 days and do neck isometrics and shoulder strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist and continue doing so for long term benefits, relying only on medicines will not help.

There is coming an sound from bones of my arms and my neck is also paining. I think it is because of using mobile. My doctor gave me medicine called 'Supracal' but my pain did not stop. Now he is telling that it's normal.

Hi thanks for the query. Sound from the joints are normal if there is no associated pain. If the sounds are associated with pain better get evaluation for any joint diseases. If there are no evidence of inflammatory joint diseases please start on exercises for your arms and neck.

If on working you gets pain in the forearm and numbness in hand, you may be suffering from compression neuropathy. In such case there are two helps, a neurologist and a nerve surgeon or hand surgeon. Getting early diagnosis and treatment can prevent any permanent damage to the nerve.
Time is most critical part in nerve injury treatment.

I am facing gout problem in my toe. The pain is too much. I take pain killers for the relief. I checked in google about the cause and its due to increase in uric acid in blood. How can this be cured naturally. Please advise.

MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Surat
You must drink more water, avoid prottin rich food all pulses and non-veg food, avoid alcohol, then again after 1 month check your serum uric acid report. If it is within normal than it is ok. But if still is above the normal level, then you must start allopathic medicines.

I am suffering from severe back pain and neck pain. Taking medicines and doing yogas daily. But still no satisfactory results. What should I do now?

MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Pune
Hello lybrate user, back pain that is associated with day time sedentary jobs like computer professional s are associated with paraspinal muscle spasms. The best way to tackle this sort of pain is to do well spaced stretching exercises of the back, back extension exercises, using hot water bags to provide relief and avoiding stooping posture while sitting. Posture also plays a very important part in back pain, always maintain a straight posture while sitting. While getting up from the bed try to first go on your left or right side of the body and get up side ways. Avoid cruntches or sit-ups: they may increase the pressure on your back and may predispose to slip disc. Always maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of regular brisk walking, meditation, eating healthy. P. S: try to avoid pain killers (analgesics) as much as possible as many are associated with side effects that you may not be aware of. Stay healthy. Stay happy god bless you.

It could be due to cervical spondylosis this is quite a common condition rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Any way take ibuprofen 200mg od & sos x 5days do neck & back (spine) exercises contact me again if need be. Use of cervical collar will give you relief. It may have to be further investigated. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take you will need other supportive medicines also. I am 33 yr old male. From 8-10 days I am suffering from pain in my neck n right shoulder n upper arm. The pain is very much and I have trouble in sleeping. Also when I lay down on bed and also on getting up from bed it pains very much. What should I do?

SLE, Fellowship In Diabetology, Diploma In Psychology Mental Health And Illness, PLAB (MANCHESTOR, UK), FAGE, MBBS
General Physician, Bangalore
Thanks for your query. As you have mentioned you are hypothyroid and this could effect your nerves sometimes. However there are several other causes of this kind of pain most commonly being that you may have a cervical neck disc prolapse with nerve impingement of pressure on the neck. I need to know if you had any pull, strain or trauma involving you neck recently. First of all a neck x-ray needs to be taken. You can use hot or cold water bag compress and pain killers till this is done. Please dont hesitate to ask if you have further queries.
