To guarantee any thing in health matters is quite debatable as there is no surety for anything none of the doctors will be able to ow your body will react to specific treatment. Although treatment adviced by your dentist is good. Again no guarantee as nobody will be able to figure out that in how much time these teeth can wear off. But if you r going for good quality (zirconia) bridge it will last for near about 10-15 yrs. Let me also tell you that zirconia bridges are on of yhe most expensive bridges. You can opt for signature bridges which also last for 5-7 yrs. You can choose according to your budget.

Dear Doctor, My mother, aged 50 years is experiencing tooth ache sporadically. Up on consultation, we realized that the lower wisdom tooth grew inclined and impacting the adjacent tooth. It even started causing infection a little in the gums surrounding that tooth. Do you recommend tooth extraction surgery? If yes, will there be any complications post surgery?(she is diagnosed with diabetes a few weeks ago) Where to get the surgery done and what prerequisite care need to be taken to ensure no complications afterwards.

Dear lybrate-user, if the impacted tooth has affected the adjacent teeth and gums, its essential to get rid of it to avoid long term infections to which diabetics are already prone. So go ahead with the treatment. A good oral surgeon would handle the case gently and there won't be any dire complications except for some moderate swelling due to anesthesia and some post-op pain for which you would be prescribed pain killers and antibiotics. Because she is not a diabetic since a very long time so it won't be a problem. Take your medications properly, follow the dentist's instructions and get it extracted.

Cigarette Smoking - How it Affects Your Teeth

MDS - Periodontology and Oral Implantology, BDS

Cigarette Smoking - How it Affects Your Teeth

‘Smoking is injurious to health’, is a caption that is flashed on all cigarette packets. However, what is not told about is their adverse effects on the mouth.  The mouth with the lips, teeth, and gums are not just the first points of contact for a cigarette but also one of the majorly affected parts.

Listed below are how smoking affects the teeth and the mouth at large.

  1. Bad breath (halitosis)

  2. Tooth discoloration (brown to black spotting)

  3. Tobacco deposits on the teeth leading to irritation of the gums

  4. Increased formation of plaque and tartar on the teeth, leading to significant gum disease

  5. Gum disease leads to tooth loss

  6. Increased jaw bone loss

  7. Lower success rate of dental implant procedures

  8. Delayed healing after any oral procedure including extraction, periodontal treatment, or oral surgery

  9. Increased risk of leukoplakia, white patches inside the mouth, which is a precursor to oral cancer

  10. Increased risk of developing oral cancer

  11. Reduces blood flow to the gums, thereby affecting healing

The tiny tobacco deposits sit on the tooth surface and with time, produce brownish stains. These are a constant source of irritation for the gums, causing gum disease. Unlike the regular plaque caused by food, this is much harder and more abrasive on the gums. This leads to damage of the periodontal tissue, which are connecting fibers between the teeth and the gums.  This leads to gradual tooth mobility and eventually loss.

Correlation:  If you are a smoker,

  1. You are at risk for gum disease twice compared to a nonsmoker.

  2. More cigarettes you smoke, greater the risk for gum disease.

  3. More number of years you smoke, greater the risk for gum disease.

  4. Poor response to regular treatment for gum disease.

Management:  The gum disease can eventually lead to tooth loss.  Therefore, the gums need to be protected at all cost to maintain oral health.  Some things to do are listed below, starting from the seemingly innocuous to the severe infections.

  1. Regular cleanings at your dentist's office once in 6 months

  2. Daily brushing and flossing to manage early gum disease

  3. Deep cleaning below the gum line and prescription mouth rinses if there is already existing gum inflammation

  4. Surgery to remove deeply seated plaque and tartar.

  5. Surgery with bone graft to replace the bone lost to periodontitis.

  6. Most important of all, quitting smoking.  This will produce remarkable benefits when the above are followed.

However, if the above are done with continued smoking, the effects will not last long.

Cigarette smoking is one habit, which has way too many effects on way too many working’s of the body and therefore kicking the habit is the best way to manage, not just your teeth, but your overall health.

Hello lybrate-user, you are already having artificial bridge in your mouth. Implant are good because putting implant you don't have to take support from adjacent teeth. They are fixed into the bone like a natural tooth. Esthetically and functionally they are the best option of replacing the tooth.

Sir what is the solution for those who have bad breath is there any permanent solution. Tell me.
May be there chances of calculous deposition at the cervical area of teeth. Go to your dentist. If needed get cleaned your teeth (i.e. Scaling and polishing) follow proper brushing technique (watch utube videos for brushing technique) and understand from your dentist. Most common causes of bad breath is poor oral hygiene which leads to gum disease and tooth decay. If tooth decay present. Get filled. If decay is deep than root canal treatment is the option other causes of bad breath smoking, alcohol habit eating food like garlic onion and spices regularly some medical conditions dry mouth (xerostomia) (GORD) means gastro-oesophageal reflux disease diabetes bronchitis tonsillitis sinusitis. Etc some medicines can also cause bad breath 1st consult your dentist. If needed consult your general practitioner.

Hi For better looking teeth, the first and most important thing is that you teeth should be clean, and free from plaque (accumulated food debris) and stains. For that, you must get professional scaling/cleaning done from a dentist. The tooth brush cannot reach all the surfaces of every tooth and therefore some areas remain unclean. Over time, the soft food debris hardens and turns into a more adherent, hard form called calculus, which can be removed only be a professional dentist. Also, along with cleaning of the teeth, antibacterial mouth washes are generally prescribed. For more specific answers, kindly consult me privately on librate. Regards.

My friend's mouth is smelling very much. He do regular brush but then also smell comes. How can I assist him.

Ask him to use himalaya's hi-ora mouthwash twice a day smell can be due to collection of plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth. Also ask him to get all tartar removed from his mouth by a dentist.
