My son is becoming very stubborn day by day and doesn't listen to whatever is told to him. 1st word is always No to what ever we say. Also he is very introvert. He didn't mingle Wit his age group but yes he plays wit elder kids. How do I tackle him?

MD Paediatrics, MBBS

Its common behaviour in such age group children. Need not panic, just deal with love do not scold the child. Send him to some play school where he can mingle with children of his play group.

Hi Doctor, my son age is 10 months old and 9 kgs weight. He has some nuro problem like cerebral dysfunction. Doctors ...
It is not clear whether c dysfunction is local lesion of brain which may cause paresis of related part or general which is called cerebral palsy which effect body. If muscle power is effected due to these reasons, complete recovery is not sure. But weakness or low power of muscle is due to nutritional deficiency, recovery is most likely good. Give him good protein diet like milk cheese, dal, chapati and all home made edibles vegetables supplement with multivitamin, iron, calcium. Massage shall help in fast recovery.

4 Simple ways to lose your baby weight naturally

4 Simple ways to lose your baby weight naturally

Having a baby brings about a number of changes in your life, including a change in the way you look. The nine months see you putting on additional weight, which you try to shed off once you deliver. To help you get back into shape, here are some very effective and simple ways that you can follow:

Losing weight doesn't mean you need to get started on a vigorous exercise regimen; even a simple walk around your apartment block can help you to lose your baby weight. Whether it's going up and down the stairs for 15 minutes or pushing the stroller for about 30 minutes, such activities can bring your body's calorie-burning capacity back on track.

  1. Breastfeed to burn about 600-800 calories everyday - Breastfeeding is not only good for your newborn but also for you. Breastfeeding your child can help you to lose weight considerably as it's a great way of burning off all the baby fat.
  2. Lift weights to speed up your body's metabolism - Lifting weights can aid in improving your body's metabolism, thereby helping you to lose your baby weight effectively. By adding weight training to your fitness regimen, you're in fact helping yourself to build muscle mass and losing weight in the process. To do this, you don't need any gym equipment, for instance, you can do lunges while taking your baby around in a stroller. Or do them while holding your child close to your chest.
  3. Always snack healthily - Having healthy snacks in place of high-calorie sugary foods can help you to get back your post-pregnancy shape. Studies show that yogurt and low-fat milk can help in weight loss as the calcium content present in these two foods block a hormone that assists the body in storing fat. Moreover, consuming foods high in fiber like raisins and figs can help in improving your digestion.
  4. Get adequate sleep - Sleeping is another way in which you can shed off those extra kilos. Try to sleep whenever you get the time as it'll help to keep you from binging on junk foods as well as keep your energy levels in check.

My son is 4 months old and I feel m a terrible mother bcoz I get frustrated sometimes with his constant crying n feeding distractions. I think I shud give him to his grandmother (Nani) who lives in different state. She loves him so so much and has told me so many times to focus on my career n leave the child to her place. But at the same time I am overwhelmed with so much guilt. And I love my son so much. But all I am doing is for him. And I cannot trust any other person for childcare other than his grandmother. What should I do. Please help.

You are going through a usual cycle of guilt and love that all mothers go through. Take it easy on yrslf. Be surrounded by loved ones and talk to them. You can get back to your work n career without guilt. Call your mother over for sometime till you learn to balance work n home. Don’t expect too much from yralf and set your priorities. Non of us are super humans to be able to balance work and family with ease. It always will take efforts and be prepared for it. Remember though grandparents can love the child unconditionally they cannot substitute the child’s own parents. Take the day as it comes n enjoy his childhood. Take time out for yralf n go out with years friends. A happy mom is all a child needs.

What are the best fruits to eat after delivery the baby which helps to newly born baby.
If you are asking about mother's diet. Then she should have 1800 to 2200calorie perday yo breastfeed comfortably. She can have 5 portions of fruits whatever us seasonally available preferred during day time. Drink plenty of water 4 to 6 lper day. Water is important for hydration and good flow of milk. Apples, papaya, my samba, banana are all good. Ask her to have dry fruits few pieces twice a day. (almond+kishmish) plenty of green veggies. Good protein source with each meak (no soya) hope this helps.

Hello doctors, please tell me can I give after noon cooked rice by 7: 00 pm to my 9 months baby?
Hello Lybrate user. It should be cooked immediately to eat. If it is cooked late will carry high rate of fermentation causing gastric disorder with cold effect, moreover, you may give rice in the evening, provided your child is not susceptible to catch cold, frquently and she is not troubled much with gastric disorder. It, should be in all respect fresh -cooked & slightly warm before to consume. Tk care.

your daughter is grossely undernourished (ideal weight at 4 yrs is 16 kg). She does not reqiure any appetite stimulants but sufficient diet given at frequent intervals in gradually increasing quantities.Appetite is a natural reflex in body stimulated by body requrements, but it is diminished in sickness & chronic malnutrition. She will improve if you feed her regular intervals in gradually increasing amounts. It may take around 6 months to catch up.Make sure she is not having any chronic illness.

Study Smarter and Not Harder!

Study Smarter and Not Harder!

There are few things I hear over and over again from students -

  • How they are studying for so many in a day
  • How they do not have even time for anything else in their life due to study pressure
  • How they are sleep deprived
  • How much they are stressed
  • And finally, after all the sacrifices and hard work, their exam performance is not what they expect.

Here are few tips to study smart, improve your grades and yet have a life!

We all know that 2 hours of focused study will be much more productive than 4 hours of distracted study.

And the good news is that concentration is a mental skill that you can develop and improve.
There are two ways to improve your concentration:

First, work on raising your brain's natural ability to concentrate or in other words, learn to increase your attention span.

Second, adjust the environment around you to make concentrating easier.

Improving your concentration takes a little time and effort, but it is worth it. In my personal experience with students, I have seen noticeable improvement in relatively short time.

Ideas for daily concentration-boosting habits include:

  • Mindfulness meditation - many studies confirm that 20 minutes of meditation or more per day improves concentration and attention span. Mindfulness meditation, where one focuses on one's breathing, is one of the simplest way of meditation. Start with ten minutes in the morning and ten minutes before bed. To begin with you may try a guided meditation. One can easily find audios for guided meditation online.
  • Proper sleep - I am sorry to say this. Pulling all nighters will not help with your grade. Unless you are getting sufficient restful sleep, you are not going to be as mentally focused as you could be to study as well as answer questions in exams.
  • Food for your Brain - The more you use certain skills, the more they are reinforced in the brain. So it makes sense that playing concentration games and games that require you to focus will improve your concentration ability. You need to be consistent in this. Play for about 10 to 20 minutes each day. Have fun, and get the benefits but remember not to spend more than 20 minutes a day. Your goal is to improve your concentration and not just keep scoring higher in the game! Try Lumocity and use only free version this will help you restrict your daily play time to 20 minutes and have maximum benefit.
  • Eat healthier - your brain needs the proper nutrients to allow you to focus. Eat more vegetables and fruits and avoid consumption of junk food as much as possible. Instead you could keep some nuts such as walnuts, almond or peanuts as in between munches. Lot of research has now proven that sugar is very harmful for our health. Reduce sugar and refined white flour in your diet as much as you could.
  • Exercise - is helpful in both reducing stress and increasing energy and focus. At least 20 minutes a day would go a long way. Going for a short jog of 20 minutes will make next 4-5 hours of study very efficient.

Optimize your mental state and environment:

In addition to building the habits described above into your daily routine; also adjust your environment and your current mental state to improve your concentration when studying.

Create a study space - Your brain loves routine. Create a place where all you do is study. An obvious choice is a secluded desk of some kind, but the trick is to make sure you only study in that spot. Studying in bed is a bad habit, for example, because your body is trained to want to sleep once you get into bed.
Remove distractions - Turn off the ringer on your phone and take other steps to prevent interruptions. Don't study with the television on or with radio playing. Some studies have shown that soft instrumental music (no vocals) can help improve your concentration.
Reduce background noises - If you have to study or work in an environment where it is too loud (classroom or open space) or too quiet (such as at home or at a library) you can get easily distracted by outside influences. With the right amount of background noise you can actually block out distractions and enhance your creative thinking.
Use timer - Set a time limit when you need to study new material. For example, let's say you want to read one chapter in a book (and remember it). Decide in advance that you can have 45 minutes to read the chapter, and 15 minutes to review it. Set a timer to keep yourself honest, then pace yourself to keep within the allotted time.
Stay motivated - If you see studying as burden, it's hard to concentrate. One way to stay motivated is to set up a reward system. Tell yourself you have to earn that hour of watching your favorite show later in the evening by first completing 2-3 hours of intense studying.
That way, even if the material is dry, you have the reward to look forward to.
Take breaks - Take a break every two hours. You mental energy will begin to decline after a long period of study. So every two hours or so, take a ten minute break. Walk around, eat a light snack, or just stare at the wall to relax your mind.
Concentrating is the first step to learning anything new. It only makes sense that if you improve your concentration, your memory will improve also.

How can I help?

If you want to get individualized expert opinion about how you are studying currently and what ways you can improve; book an audio consultation with me. Once I know what your current study methods are, I will be able to give you specific tips to improve upon. Most likely once you incorporate my tips you will be spending less time studying and your grades will improve. That's what is studying smarter and not harder means!!

Continue breastfeeding, start weaning with home food that family eats. Make it mashed and thin so that child can swallow. Take meals with child, so that child learns by watching you eat. Child has a mind, by forcing her to eat she will become more adamant. Respect your child, it's very important while teaching them to behave.
