Ringing In Ears - What Does it Mean and When to Seek Help

Ringing In Ears - What Does it Mean and When to Seek Help

Ringing in the ears, medically called Tinnitus, is a condition in which the individual hears a certain sound continuously in the ears.

The nature of this sound varies with different individuals. The sound may be whistling, buzzing or bell-like; it might be low or high; seeming to come from a far point or from inside of one's body.

Tinnitus in most cases is subjective where only the affected individual is able to hear the sounds. In some cases, the condition might also be objective wherein the doctor/examiner might be able to hear the sounds on examining.

Understanding the most common cause:

The process of sound waves travelling from the ear to the brain is facilitated by hair cells. When these hair cells are damaged, the brain does not receive signals which cause dysfunction in the activity of neurons. This dysfunctional neuron activity results in the illusion of sounds in the said individual. This illusion is referred to as Tinnitus.

Other causes that might result in Tinnitus are:

Damage around the hearing sections of the brain also might result in ringing sounds / tinnitus. Excessive noise might result into Tinnitus and if not prevented might even progress to hearing loss. There are also some drugs that may cause or worsen the condition.

When to seek help:

In the case of a sudden episode of Tinnitus, it may be associated with hearing loss. Such an episode should be followed by visiting the doctor immediately to prevent any further damage.

Sometimes, the ringing sound occurs rhythmically with your heart beat. It might be because of a pulsating blood vessel and/or because of a sudden hike in blood pressure. This condition would also be relatively easy to cure if reported immediately to the doctor.

If ringing sound occurs with a certain movement, it might be associated with stroke in some cases. In such incidents, conveying the exact symptoms and seeking help sooner would help in treating the underlying cause effectively.

With the first episode of Tinnitus, a regular medication that you intake should be shown to the doctor to rule out medication as the cause or to discontinue a certain medication if found to the causative agent.

I have a problem with balance disorder. I took medicine for vertigo and it is quite helpful. But it did not heals fully.

I have a problem with balance disorder. I took medicine for vertigo and it is quite helpful. But it did not heals fully.
Yes you are right, vertigo cannot be cured fully if it is due to damage of the middle or the inner ear, if it due to pathology which is related to discharge and any granulations than this can be corrected by the surgical mode. Vertigo is very common these days in any age group due to excess of noise exposure and damage to inner ear, humming sound, whistling and giddiness are the problems which are getting in people are very common these days, these get complicated when they are not taken care of at proper time whistling or buzzing in the ear is getting commoner these days in people of all ages. Most common causes is wax or any object in the ear, after getting your ears clean these gets over. But if ears are already clean than this is worrisome. Common causes which are responsible are high cholesterol diet, alcohol, smoking, loud noises, cervical spondylosis, trauma (self or inflicted) over the ears. If this is the situation than report to your ent doctor immediately tinnitus is basically due to hampered blood supply to ears due to which ears start dying. As this process starts a person starts hearing noises. When a person starts hearing noises then it is already late diagnosis as these noises gets heard by someone when they are of 40 db intensity, below that threshold these noises are not heard. So it is already to late and the damage has become permanent. Problem with these noises are that we can control at what level person goes to his specialist otherwise these noises keep on increasing and can give you headache frustration and depression. Now a days tinnitus maskers are available which help you to lead your life peacefully.

Hi lybrate-user, many patients have congenitally single kidney. They usually have no problem. However, it is important to take certain precautions. 1. Avoid drugs that can injure kidneys, eg. Pain killers (like diclofenac, brufen etc.), some antibiotics like gentamicin, amikacin etc. 2. Prevent lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension that can damage kidneys by taking healthy diet and walking regularly. 3. Protein intake needs to be reduced only in certain stages of chronic kidney disease. In your situation, you can take 50 to 60 grams protein per day. 4. Please do ultrasound of kidneys and get serum creatinine & urine protein test done every year. 5. Reduce animal proteins, drink 3-4 lite fluid per day and increase fruits and vegetables. Wish you good health,

I had sudden hearing loss on both the ears around 6 years back. I was advised carbogen therapy 3 times by ENT Dr and continue further 2 times if there is any improvement. There was no improvement. Hearing loss has been 75% in left ear and around 30% in right year. Dr whom I consulted is one of the best in India. Took medicine for about 3 months and stopped as advised by him. He could not tell me the reason for the hearing loss or did not advise me to undergo any test to find out the exact reason. He is one of the best in India. Around 2 years ago, vertigo problem started. I consulted my family Dr with all earlier details who advised me to test blood for Vitamin B12, which was found very low. He said this can result to low blood circulation sometimes and this may be the cause of vertigo. Medicine for improving Vitamin B12 and vertigo (Vertin 16mg) was advised. Stopped medicine for Vitamin B12 when it became OK and continuing Verting 16mg twice a day. Last year, as advised by another ENT Dr, I did MRI of head and nothing wrong was found. The severity and frequency of vertigo has decreased since last few months. Kindly advise what can be the reason for the sudden hearing loss and vertigo.

The cause can be idiopathic to ototoxicity to loud noise ...multifactorial causes are there no body can tell u tht !! The doc is rite in what he did ..but B 12 deficiency is also not directly related to vertigo ...so go for treatment ..looking for cause is futile nd fruitless ...see a good vertigo expert and neurologist .i can also help in relieving vertigo as by grace of god i hv a good record of curing vertigo ..u can see me in Rockland Hospital dwarka new delhi ..

Dust allergy is partly genetic and partly environmental. Thus it never goes away. With better ,less dusty environment  the extent if the problem gets reduced. Medicines help to downregulate the immune response of your body to these environmental allergens. Long term lifestyle  changes with gradually tapering medication  helps to tackle chronic sinus problems.  Start taking Steam inhalation twice a day. *For chronic allergic rhinosinusitis you will need to take a long term course of antibiotics  together  with Nasal sprays . *You will need to avoid dusty environment  and dust mites, animal dander etc. Regular cleaning of AC air filters. Wearing mask while driving 2 wheelers/working in dusty  areas Medical  management  is done for 3 months and then patients  condition is reviewed.  Intermittent treatment is not beneficial  in the long run. Around 30 %of people with allergic rhinitis  will develop Asthma if not treated .But majority of patients with asthma are allergic to dust .Active treatment  of nasal allergy reduces Asthma attacks and medicine requirements. This improve  quality of life .allergens.

Are there other problems also like sneezing/nasal discharge/decreased smell? according to your problem it may be due to recurrence of problem or undercorrection at that time. Need of revision surgery can only be advised only after proper evaluation. Nasivion nasal drops 2-2-2-2 both side of nose will help.

This is caused due to dry nose, as this is due to lack of mucus in the nose, mucus is basically a protective layer in the nose which helps to keep nose wet, as nose gets dried up this leads to recurrent infection of nose along with sneezing.

Repeated attacks of sneezing , itching in the nose , blocking of the nose , headache are some of the common symptoms of allergic rhinitis. You need to take an anti allergic tablet for a month or two.In some cases change of place will help. One needs to know to what they are allergic to.

If th nose problem is due to the deformity of bone and cartilage, a surgical option is the answer. A nasal endoscpy and a ct scan for paranasal sinuses should also be done.
