Ways To Identify Behavioral Problems

Ways To Identify Behavioral Problems

A pediatrician manages a child's overall physical and psychological health condition. While most parents consult a pediatrician when the child falls sick, they miss the importance of regular visits to the doctor even if the child is seemingly healthy. There are recommended schedules which prescribe regular visits to the doctor from about a week after the birth of the child. The visits are more frequent up till the age of 6 or 7, after which a monthly visit is usually sufficient. The following is a list of reasons why your child should be taken to a pediatrician every month:

1. Documenting the rate of growth
The pediatrician measures the child's weight and height during every visit and charts them. This is important for comparison with the average rate of growth and pin pointing the problems in normal growth (if any) and the reasons for these problems. For example, if a 4 year old girl is in the 80th percentile for height, it means that 80% of the girls her age are shorter than she is and 20% are taller than she is. The rate of growth is an indicator of a child's general health.

2. Detecting deviations in developmental patterns
There are well-defined physical and emotional developmental patterns for children of all ages. For example, a child starts using signals to communicate by 4 months, or starts talking by the age of 2. A pediatrician can spot deviations from the standard patterns better than parents can. Apart from the measurement of height and weight, sometimes hearing, motor skills and vision tests are also conducted on your visit to the pediatrician to ensure that these basic systems and functions are developing properly.

3. Identifying reasons behind behavioral problems
Behavioral issues in children can be caused by a number of reasons - their inability to correctly express physical discomfort, bonding or attachment issues with the parents or caregivers, interactive problems with peers in school etc. Common behavioral problems are snoring, sleep walking, bed wetting, outbursts of anger, lack of social communication etc. The problems can be prevented from becoming complicated conditions if treated early.

4. Prevention of diseases
The schedule for all the required vaccinations is maintained by the pediatrician. Apart from immunization, regular visits to a pediatrician are important for pointing the beginning symptoms of certain diseases. Nutritional deficiencies, which are very common in children, can be diagnosed and addressed before they lead to health problems. Often parents become extremely apprehensive about the child's health- their queries can be answered and their worries can also be put to rest by these visits.

The adhd children will be agitated and cannot be controlled and you can try good counselling while other non-drug treatments — play therapy, cognitive therapy, psychotherapy, and special adhd eating plans — have been regarded as promising, only behavioral treatment has been shown to work.

Good evening doctor. My baby is turning 4 months on this Sunday, the 22nd. All vaccines have been given as per schedule viz. Rotavirus, IPV etc. However, kindly advise on the pneumococcal vaccine. Doctor informed us that its a dose of 3 injections and an optional one and not a mandatory one. Please guide us and oblige. Will there be any adverse effects if not taken? Regards.

Good evening doctor. My baby is turning 4 months on this Sunday, the 22nd. All vaccines have been given as per schedu...
This is a very pertinent question and many parents in india would have the same questions in their mind. Let us get down to the basics first. Vaccine is something which gives your baby extra protection against a particular disease. The human body is equipped with an immune system, which normally protects from disease causing germs. Vaccines only strengthens the immune system. Taking a vaccines does not guarantee that your baby would not get the infection, but it decreases the risk markedly. Similarly not taking the vaccine, does not mean your baby is certainly going to have the disease, but it definitely reduces the risk significantly. So giving the vaccine is surely an advantage. The disadvantage is the price, as the pneumococcal vaccine is quite costly compared to other vaccines. The government can not bear the cost for all the eligible children in india, so as for now parents have to pay if they wish to give this advantage to their baby.

In a 3 month old these are just normal and you take care to keep the area clean and distract her. She will just put anything in mouth and suck.

My baby is 15 months old and his weight is approx 8 kg. I had found worms (thin white) in stool. What medicine should I use and dosage?

Your baby is having pin worms. You can give syp Zentel. 10 ml single dose. It takes care of any other worm infestation too.

The tiny tots must use a toothbrush with a small rounded brush head and soft bristles. It helps in cleaning their milk teeth thoroughly.

Yup it's 7. There are few things which can be best done when the child is growing. Make sure you visit a pedodontist at 7. So your child does not misses important growing years for growth modification procedures if required.

My son (4 month) had heart surgery due to CHF emergency. He was having ASD (4 mm), VSD (6 mm) & also pulmonary valve stenosis. His surgery is successfully done at AIIMS Delhi, but as per doctors, due to heavy pressure on lungs, they left PFO as open. Just wanted to know, how much PFO can harm, & how we can precaution it. Thank you.

a patent foramen ovale, patent meaning open. For the vast majority of the millions of people with a PFO, it is not a problem, even though blood is leaking from the right atrium to the left. Problems can arise when that blood contains a blood clot.
