Knee advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

All done. Doc says that you have ankylosing spondylitis so this issue will persist. There no solution but pain killers and steroids and exercises. ESR, CRP, LFT all are ok. What to do?

Hi lybrate-user, it's ab arthritis with many management options. Pain killers and steroids ate given fir few days only to suppress the acute inflammation or swelling, there have been very good studies saying that if taken judiciously under supervision they cause no harm. 20 percent of AS don't respond to basic treatment line and exercises. They require slightly more expensive drugs. It depends on which way you want to l9ok at it 10 years back we had almost nothibgvto treat, not much evidence and a dismal outlook. Many patients spines used to get fused with dismal outlook. Now a days good evidence, good medicines, gives AS patients very good quality of life, which is very important as most of AS patients are young working males. Please see the glass half full, be positive and follow your rheumatologist.

Give pressure the dipping point on the portion between the thumb and the index finger on the back of the palm. Press and release for 15 times where the pain is more. This will solve the problem. Further do some wrist rotation exercise. Identify the mid point between the ankle bone and tendons and give pressure with a blunt edge on either side of your foot for 2 minutes. Also give pressure in the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from your toe for 2 minutes. Finally give a good massage for both feet in hot water. I had surgery in spin l5 and s1 dis compressed. After that surgery I am in normal just for 6 month now again I am in pain. How I came out from that?

See life has no shortcuts and doctors and patients need to understand this alike. Pain reoccurring after disc surgery after 6 months indicate towards failure of life style modifications and physio on part of patient. Surgery gives no guarantee of permanent cure. You now need repeat MRI to see cause of your pain. The treatment depends accordingly.

Physiotherapy For Broken Wrist

Physiotherapy For Broken Wrist

Pain is inevitable after the plaster is removed from the location of the broken wrists. Since the wrist hasn’t moved for well over a couple of weeks, the hand might feel vulnerable to perform routine tasks. Along with the prescribed medication, physiotherapy is mighty effective in healing the wrist and getting the old balance back. The process of physiotherapy should be typically started when the pain diminishes and the Doctor gives his go-ahead for the same.

What are the benefits?

This is primarily done to get back the muscle strength. Physiotherapy also helps in gaining mobility and function of the wrist that has been affected because of the injury. While therapy does not heal the fracture, they ensure bones of the wrist get denser and stronger. This ensures that future injuries are effectively prevented.

Stretching Exercises-

  1. Flexion: This is the process of bending the wrist in the forward direction and holding the posture for 5 seconds. 3 sets of 10 flexions should be done in one session.

  2. Extension: This is the opposite of flexion. In this exercise, the wrist should bend backwards and 3 sets of 10 extensions should be performed in each session.

  3. Side Movement: The wrist should be moved sideways much like the motion performed during a handshake. Each movement should last for 5 seconds and 3 sets of 10 such movements should be performed in each session.

  4. Wrist Stretch: This is the process of bending the wrist with the help of the other hand. The next process is to stretch the fingers backwards with the help of the other hand. This posture should be held for 15 seconds and 3 sets should be performed.

  5. Wrist Extension: This is an exercise where the body weight is placed on the wrist by keeping the palms down and legs straight. This exercise should be repeated thrice each lasting for 15 seconds.

  6. Grip Strengthening: A soft rubber ball should be kept in the palm and squeezed for 5 seconds. This activity should be done 15 times twice.

  7. Wrist Supination: This exercise involves the flipping of the forearm up and down for 5 seconds each. It can be done in sets of 10 each.

Other Exercises-

Once a person gets comfortable with the stretching exercises, the same exercises can be done with some weight in hand to further strengthen the muscles. Isometric exercises can also be practised. This is beneficial since they do not involve muscle contraction. A mix of all these exercises will help to mobilise the wrist. Apart from these exercises, certain other activities such as swimming, driving and cycling can be practised to ensure speedy recovery of the artist. At any point of time, a physiotherapist should be consulted before taking up any new exercise or activity that involves the wrist.

Contrast bath---It is a form of treatment where a limb or the entire body is immersed in warm water followed by the immediate immersion of the limb or body in ice water. This procedure is repeated several times, alternating hot and cold. Note that the treatment should always end in the ice water, as heat will induce the body's inflammatory response, while cold helps to decrease inflammation.
