Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Shoulder Pain - Reasons Behind It!

Shoulder Pain - Reasons Behind It!

The shoulder is one of the most important joints in the body that uses a ball and socket to join the arm to the rest of the body. Any pain can make it difficult to carry out motion in a comfortable manner. The shoulder consists of the long arm bone called the humerus, the collarbone or the clavicle, as well as the shoulder blade called the scapula. A layer of cartilage provides essential padding to the bones in this area and its two main joints. There are a number of issues that can cause shoulder pain. Let us get to know the six most common ones.

  1. Rotator Cuff Injury: This is the most common cause of shoulder pain and it occurs when the four muscles or the tendons are injured. These muscles and tendons usually control the movement of the arm. This injury can involve strains and tears which may also be caused by constant lifting of heavy objects.
  2. Rotator Cuff Tendonitis: This condition affects the tendons and muscles that help in moving the arm freely. This usually happens due to inflammation in the tendons. It is commonly experienced by patients who are actively involved in sports and other heavy physical pursuits in their line of work.
  3. Frozen Shoulder: This is a debilitating condition that restricts the free movement of the arm and is also known as adhesive capsulitis. When the shoulder tissues become too thick, it leads to the growth of scar tissue that hinders proper movement and causes pain.
  4. Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a condition that comes as part of aging bones that also become hollow and brittle over the passage of time, which leads to joint and bone pains in various parts of the body. It is a degenerative disease that is caused due to prolonged wear and tear as well as other factors including family history and sports injury.
  5. Bursitis: This condition is known to affect the fluid filled sacs that lie in between the joints. These are known as bursae. When the bursae suffers from swelling, the effect usually shows up as pain in the joints.
  6. Tendon Sheath Inflammation: The fibrous tissue that connects the bones and the muscles is called a tendon. The presence of the tendon makes it possible to pursue activities like running, jumping, lifting, gripping and more. It is protected by a sheath known as synovium, which also lubricates the same. Any injury or tear to this sheath can cause shoulder pain.

Acute and persistent pain that does not abate and gets even worse should be treated with immediate medical intervention.

Hi, Do share reports and details of your case. Apply Bakson’s Rheum Aid oil gently (2-3 times a day) and take orally Bakson’s Rheum-Aid syrup/ 1 tablespoon thrice daily. Also, increase your dietary intake of calcium which is present in green leafy vegetables, milk, milk products, sea food, white legumes, dried fig, black-eyed peas, almonds, oranges, seasame seeds. And vitamin D which is essential for absorption of calcium in our body and is synthesized naturally after getting exposed to sunlight, so early morning sunlight for 10-15 min. 2-3 times a day is mandatory. Apart from this, physiotherapy will also help you.

Hi, I get pain in my knees whenever I sit folding the knees, same case is with my fingers. I am 30 yrs old height- 5.1" and weight is - 47 kg. Is it arthritis and how can I get rid of this problem. There are frequent changes also in my mood. Unwanted thoughts come in mind. I am unable to concentrate on anything. What can be the possible solution ( in ayurved, home or meditation) for all these problems

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
To determine whether it is arthritis you will need to do several tests, apart from the physical examination. Treatment wise you must try Yoga to relieve the pain within a few weeks; and Ayurvedic medicine, if it has been established that you have arthritis to see, if it works. If not, you will need to go for allopathic medicines only for relief. The mental stress you mention may be caused by other factors that are disturbing your mind. Please talk to a counselor to identify those issues and as you deal with them you will feel better. For concentration and containing your thoughts, I have a few exercises which will certainly help. But talking will be of tremendous help. Meditation is very good to train the brain, and discipline your thoughts.

Goodevening lybrate-user what I would advice you to do is to start with a few strengthening exercises for your leg. You need to get a proper gait (walking training) done for yourself. Always make sure that you place your heel first and then your foot should be flat. Walking properly with the right type of posture is very important. You could also do a fermentation of heat and cold that will also reduce your pain.

Knee Replacement - Is It For You or Not?

Knee injuries are the most complex injuries of bone and cartilages. A direct hit can lead to this situation. You may get this injury while doing your daily activities. An activity as simple as walking or a deadly accident can lead to this injury. You never know, when you are left with a damaged knee. In critical cases, you are advised to undertake a joint replacement surgery. According to latest studies, doctors replace more than a million knees or hips in a year in the United States. It is a life-changing procedure. But you need to know whether you are the right candidate or not? Follow the below-mentioned points to get a clear picture:

Reasons to replace your knee

  1. Pain and stiffness: If it hurts you a lot while you are walking or trying to climb stairs, it may be an indication of having a new joint. It has to be also noted that whether the pain is long-term. You know that you need a new joint when there is pain for at least 6 months.
  2. Your injured knee hampers your daily life: It is not the only pain that might be a cause of worry. Your injured knee can hurt your entire life. It will limit your daily activities, hampering your office work and personal life. It will upset you and drive you towards depression. To get rid of all these issues, you can opt for a knee replacement surgery.
  3. Bone damage: Before taking up the surgery, you must consult your doctor. He or she will ask you to conduct X-rays and other imaging tests first. The reports will clarify whether or not you require a surgery. The reports will show that whether you are suffering from osteoarthritis or other conditions.
  4. Deformity: The surgery is needed when your knee gets severely swollen and looks deformed.

When joint replacement may not help?
There are a number of situations when the joint replacement may not help. These are as follows:
If there is any infection in the body, you cannot take up this surgery. If you have suffered from a heart attack, stroke, diabetes or any related issues, then you will have complications at the time of surgery. It is also advisable to get rid of the extra kilos, if you are obese to get the best results. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopaedics.

I am 20 years old and I am getting backache when I stand for some time or when I do a little work. So what to do?

COMT, MPTh/MPT
Physiotherapist, Surat
I am 20 years old and I am getting backache when I stand for some time or when I do a little work. So what to do?
Back pain is a very common complaint that I am coming across. Nowadays it is due to life style or bad posture. There are many other reasons for back pain like overuse of muscle or any internal disease like spondylitis, infection etc. Many of the problem occurs for which we are not aware. So in general I would advice you for some precautions and treatment that will help you to get cured. Precautions: 1. Avoid forward bending, if required then bend your knees first and then bend forward. 2. Avoid weight lifting. 3. Sit in chairs or car seats with proper back support. 4. Try to sleep in a position that helps you maintain the curve in your basck like sidelying. 5. Get enough vit d from sun as vit d keep bones strong including spine, 6. Drink plenty of water to enhance the inter vertebral disks 7. Avoid standing in the one position for a long time. 8. Try to sleep in a position that helps you maintain the curve in your back. In physiotherapy I have designed one I-care Home program for back and neck pain that patients can do at home. Many of patients have taken this treatment and get cured. Treatment- 1. Apply ice or heat which ever suits you directly to the area of low back pain will decrease swelling and inflammation, and ease your discomfort. Apply it for 10 to 15 minutes only. 2.Relaxing for 5 minutes after ice or heat treatment. Massage - Ask someone to massage your painful area using fingers or thumb. Massage using kneading technique. Slightly press the thumb and start rotating as it helps to induce relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce levels of stress chemicals, such as cortisol and noradrenaline. It will give you pain relief for time being. 3. After massage again relax for 5 min and apply any pain relieving ointment eg - volini or oraflame gel etc. Make sure not to do massage with the gel, it should not penetrate the body. Just a topical application of gel should be done. 4. Again relax your body for 5 minutes and perform some normal back extension and hamstring stretching exercises to get relief from your pain. While performing exercises if pain occurs then would recommend you to stop doing exercise. Massage or slightly rub the painful area. If pain exagerate then you can go for investigation procedures like X ray, blood test (Vit B 12, uric acid, calcium etc) to know the reason. In your case it seem pain is postural so I am sure I-care will give you relief. If you did not understand or have any doubt regarding the I-CARE Plan, please inform or send me an email at swatisagar121@gmail.com. Mr. Lybrate user, chikun gunya patients also have chances for suffering from joint pains for 1-2 yrs. But here it is not that continuity it seems. You must see any orthopedic once for related tests& analysis. If its diagnosed properly, then you may need immediate required t/t. Based on progress& the diagnosis, you can opt for other alternative choice of t/t parallally, depending on the progress.

I have a back problem I used lots of medicines but I did not feel relelifee what I should.
Back problems could be bacause of a lot of reasons, bad posture, muscle weakness, heavy weight lifting, trauma or accident. You should go to an orthopaedic surgeon and ascertain the cause first. If medicines are not giving you any relief may be you have weak back muscles for which you should learn some exercises and do them daily. Visit a physiotherapist and get your back assessed. Also maintain a good posture. Avoid sitting for a long time, take small breaks, get up and walk, do exercises for back, avoid heavy weight lifting.
