I am having neck pain and pain in the back of my head whenever I lower my head. What may the possible reasons.

I am having neck pain and pain in the back of my head whenever I lower my head. What may the possible reasons.
This is cervical pain (neck pain) and that's the reason the pain radiates until the shoulder blades. If you keep ice that would help to reduce the pain and feel relaxed and comfortable. You shall also do hot water fermentation that would improve the blood circulation to the painful area and thereby the pain would be reduced. You shall use cervical collar which would help you to reduce the radiating pain and also that would improve the cervical angle and improve the anatomical posture. The pain actually triggers due to nerve compression and that would definitely improve by wearing a cervical collar. This is due to the improper posture as while sitting in front of the computer it leads to neck pain and thereby it leads to shoulder pain. We suggest neck mobilization exercises that would reduce the stress falling on the shoulder. We also suggest patients to do shoulder mobilization exercises ie. General shoulder movements/neck movements which will help you to improve the blood circulation.

Back ache can be due to several reasons. It can be muscular, related to disc degeneration or prolapse, joint irritation or nerve pinching. Most common is muscle pain due to tight and weak back and abdominal muscles. Keep a positive attitude, focus more on keeping good posture especially when sitting for long hours, use lumbar support. Take frequent breaks and stretch in between. Try changing sleeping habits. Try hot or cold therapy as tolerated. Wish you speedy recovery.

Back Pain - 6 Exercises That Can Help!

Pain is something that you cannot avoid in your life and when it comes to back pain, you will experience it at least once in your lifetime. In most cases, the back pain is temporary and can be relieved with little care. But in some cases, the pain is very severe and chronic. It keeps recurring and can cause a lot of inconvenience in doing even daily work. The basic reason for back pain is weak back muscles and weak core muscles.
Stretching and strengthening the lower back will help in reducing the pain.

Here are 6 exercises that can help reduce back pain.

  1. Child Pose: For this exercise, you should initially kneel down on the mat. You should now lean forward and stretch your hands forwards. Try to rest your head on the floor and hold the position for 30 seconds to one minute.
  2. Cat Pose: This is one of the best exercises for both spine and back. You should begin on all fours. Make sure that your hands are under the shoulders and your knees are under the hips. Your spine and head should be on the same line. Now exhale slowly and push your spine towards the ceiling, while your head should be lowered towards the floor. Hold for a few seconds and then reverse the position.
  3. Hip Raise: You should lie down straight on the floor. Keep your knees close and bent, and flat on the ground. Now, you should raise your hips until you form a straight line. You should hold the position for at least 5 seconds or as long as you can. You should get back to a normal position and then repeat the same.
  4. Cobra Pose: You should lie down on the floor with your face down and legs straight. Keep your hands on the side and your palms down. You should now raise your head, chest, shoulder and legs at the same time, off the ground. You can hold this position for as long as possible and then relax. You should repeat the same 10 to 15 times.
  5. Bird Dog Pose: You should begin on all fours. Make sure that your hands are under the shoulders and your knees are under the hips. Now you should extend the right leg towards the back very slowly. It should be like you are kicking something at the back. At the same time, you should stretch your left hand. Hold the position for a few seconds and then get back to normal. Now, repeat the same with the other side.
  6. Front Fold Pose: Stand straight with feet apart and raise your hands up in the air. Now, lean forwards keeping your back straight. You should cross the hands in front of you and hold that forward position for 20 seconds. Repeat the same.

Knee Ligament laxity if you have problem in your legs then it might be due to ligament laxity where your legs would become very weak due to the old ligament injury and that should be treated immediately. Wear knee cap so that you will feel firm while walking or climbing stairs. This is a general strain and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes, if pain still persists you can stretch your body by twisting the waist on both sides how we used to do in the school drill similarly you can try! One time you can do hot water fermentation that would help to reduce the muscle strain. You have to do knee strengthening exercises, ie. Knee rehabilitation exercises which will strengthen your knee. Exercises will give you permanent cure than the surgery. Physiotherapy Management:You can take Ultrasonic therapy in one of the nearby physiotherapy clinics which would help to heal the damaged cartilages along with shortwave diathermy which would help to improve the blood circulation.

Hello. Due to continuity of sitting in a same posture full day for studying, somethings my neck pains too much, I apply pain relief gel that gives me relief only for some time. Can I get a proper suggestion for this issue ?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. These complaints are very common amongst young population. My advise is to maintain proper posture of neck while working or studying, do not bend your neck much, if your working on computers, then your monitor should be at your eye's level. Make it a point to take short breaks in between. Do regular exercises of your neck muscles so that further strengthening take place ( initial physical therapy even with modalities can be done with physiotherapist as well) short course of anti-inflammatory medications can be taken. Your pain will improve just by doing your exercises properly and maintaining good posture, if there is an issue, let me know. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.
