Sore throat/cough-home remedies

Sore throat, though painful, lasts only for a few days. Sometimes
It is accompanied or followed by dry cough. Most of us get it
Treated with antibiotics and painkillers which is normally
Unnecessary. It is mostly self limiting and may go away in a few
Days. Yet, it is not something to be left untreated. And most
Certainly, you ought to get medical attention if it is recurrent.

Some causes

# airborne allergens
# upper respiratory infections
# asthma
# dry air
# sinus infection
# other infections like laryngitis or pharyngitis
# post nasal drip
# gerd/acid reflux
# smoking

A few days of home treatment can help if the sore throat is not
Characterised by fever or other symptoms.
1. Gargle! one cup of lukewarm water with one teaspoon of salt and
A pinch of turmeric would make an excellent gargle to soothe sore
Throat. Do this at least 3 times a day.
2. Ginger tea with honey.
3. A tea prepared with lemon can also help.
4. Chamomile tea is relieving.
5. Broths (vegetable or chicken) are good.
6. A lot of warm fluids should be taken.
7. In the case of allergens, recognize the allergen and stay away
From it. Use a humidifier or air conditioner.
8. Stay away from second hand smoke, caffeine and alcohol.
9. Elevate the head with pillows at night.
10. Licorice, thyme, peppermint, eucalyptus oil are some other
Herbs used for home treatment.
11. Cough lozenges and cough suppressants can help with pain.
12. Take rest (voice included).

In the case of severe throat pain with fever and swollen lymph
Nodes you will need to consult me privately.

I wanted to know the treatment available for throat infection and tiredness often occurring, is it available through acupuncture.

How to take steam inhalation for best results Steam inhalation is advised in many conditions. Here is the step by step guide to steam inhalation- Techniques to steam 1) boil a pot of water. 2) pour water into a large flat pan or bowl. If you use a casserole, water will remain warm for longer duration. 3) place your head over the bowl at a distance of 1 feet. 4) cover your head and bowl with a large towel (like a tent), take long breath through your nose and breath out through mouth. Take a break every 1-2 minutes until you feel relatively cooler. Do it for 10 minute twice or thrice a day. If you feel that the treatment is getting too much for you, raise the towel so that fresh air is brought into the area and breathe through your mouth a couple of times and then resume Take care - take all precautions while dealing with hot water. Also, keep children away and wan others that you are dealing with boiling hot water. Other way is - by an electric steamer available in market and take steam through it. It is more convenient.

My daughter is suffering from chronic tonsillitis for a long time now. We did allopathic and homeopathic treatments but she only got temporary relief. Now she has developed cavities in the tonsils in which food particles got stuck. We want to get the tonsils removed by surgery. Since she is in UK and will have to travel to India for this purpose, I want to know how long it will take her to recover and go back to UK? How many days prior to the surgery she is required to be here in Delhi. Thanking you.

Whenever I come to Mumbai, I am fine in South Mumbai. If I go north (Parel, Dadar) and stay for three hours or more, I come back with sore throat, runny nose and heavy sneezing. What is the best treatment for this if such travel is unavoidable.

Hi lybrate-user, it's just change of environment. Just flu .do not just symptomatic treatment is required unless complicated which would be taken care by us. For sore throat saline water gargling with lukewarm water is enough. For running nose and sneezing good antihistaminic is enough. If all not working. Please consult with doctor.

MBBS

Hello, Thanks for your query on Lybrate "As" per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this - 1)Do a clinical examination by your Doctor [Otolaryngologist] and to confirm do [CBC with differential] 2)You discuss with your Doctor to take [Amoxycillin-500mg]three times per day for 3 days if the infection is bacterial. 3)Do take plenty of sleep and rest your voice. 4)Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. 5)You can take warm liquids like broth, caffeine-free tea or warm water with honey and cold treats like ice pops can soothe a sore throat. 6)Prepare a saltwater gargle like this[ 1 teaspoon of table salt to 250 milliliters of warm water] can help soothe a sore throat. Gargle every 2 hours. 7)Humidify the air. Use a cool-air humidifier to eliminate dry air that may further irritate a sore throat. 8)Try to avoid irritants. Keep your home free from cigarette smoke and cleaning products that can irritate the throat. 9)Treat pain and fever. Talk to your doctor about using[ ibuprofen+paracetamol] to minimize throat pain and control a fever. Do follow lifestyle modifications like this- 1)Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after using the toilet and before eating. 2)Try to avoid sharing food, drinking glasses or utensils 3)Stay at home until cured Hope that helps
