8 Tips to Improve Your Child's Mental Well-being

8 Tips to Improve Your Child's Mental Well-being

Parents are always concerned about their child's physical health, but often ignore their mental health. Along with physical well-being, your child's mental well-being is also equally important.

The following are eight tips to improve your child's mental well-being:

  1. Adequate sleep: Sufficient amount of sleep is required for a child to stay mentally fit. Parents often engage their children with various classes and activities and compromise on their sleeping hours. This in turn affects the child's mental state. Therefore, as a parent, you must take care not to compromise on your child's sleeping hours.
  2. Allowing them to play: Nowadays, children are overburdened with studies and other learning activities. They do not get to play quite often. But as a parent, you must take care of your child's schedule, so that he/she can have proper playtime too. Playing involves physical activity as well as creativity in certain cases. This helps to improve mental health.
  3. Learning to share and care: You must take care to inculcate in your child the values of sharing and caring. These little things can also help improve your child's mental health. Learning how to share with others and caring for others will help them to stay happy.
  4. Regular exercise: Encouraging your child to regularly exercise will not only help improve his/her physical health, but also mental health. It will also help them to reduce stress and maintain a good mood as well.
  5. Listen to them: Parents often ignore when children are speaking on less important matters; may be about a new friend or a strict teacher in school. But as a parent, you must take out some time from your daily schedule to listen out to their stories. Listening to them attentively will make them feel important, increase their confidence and hence, improve their mental well-being.
  6. Encourage them to make friends: Encouraging your child to make new friends will help them to socialize better. They will feel confident about themselves and also open up. This can boost up their mental well-being.
  7. Good nourishment: Proper nourishment is not only essential for being physically fit, but also mentally fit. Good nourishment will help them stay healthy physically and increase their energy levels. This in turn will positively affect their mental health.
  8. Make them feel safe: Children need to feel safe in order to stay mentally fit. Try and spend some time with them every day. As a parent, always make your children realize that you are right beside them. Listen to their problems and help them find solutions to solve those instead of scolding them. Help them to relax and feel secure to stay mentally fit.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a the doctor and ask a free question.

General Physician,
Vitamin d deficiency historically has been defined as a blood level of 25hydroxyvitamind below 25nmol/l. There is scientific debate about the optimal vitamin d blood level. Current practice in the uk, as recommended by the british paediatric and adolescent bone group, is to continue to use that as the defined level of deficiency, and to define? insufficiency? as between 25 and 50nmol/l. Some laboratories and authorities use higher levels but this current practice is based on robust evidence of benefits to bone health when levels are more than 50nmol/l. Vitamin d deficiency can cause seizures and cardiomyopathy in infants, rickets and poor growth in children and muscle weakness at any age. Need to discuss more details, you are free to ask privately in ask privately option with, birth and development history and complaints which made you test for d levels. Mention your name and mail id with phone no. I am thinking of writing an article on vitamin d deficiency among other deficiency states and diseases. You can read them in health tips there is already an article in diseases category by me.

Generally speaking it takes about 7-8 days to stop loose motions in children give her syp rinifol 2.5 ml twice a day for 5 days. Keep watch on signs like 1. Dehydration (decrease urine output i. E urination less than 6 times a day) 2. High fever 3. Blood in stools.

Infants 'unable to use toy building blocks' due to iPod addiction
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers warn that rising numbers of children are unable to perform simple tasks such as using building blocks because of overexposure to iPod and smart phones
Rising numbers of infants lack the motor skills needed to play with building blocks because of an “addiction” to tablet computers and smartphones, according to teachers.
Many children aged just three or four can “swipe a screen” but have little or no dexterity in their fingers after spending hours glued to iPads, it was claimed.
Members of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers also warned how some older children were unable to complete traditional pen and paper exams because their memory had been eroded by overexposure to screen-based technology.
They called on parents to crackdown on tablet computer use and even turn off wi-fi at night to address the problem.

He has completed 9 months but his weight is not increasing from 5th month. His weight is still 8 kg as he was in 5th month. I am giving him diet of meshed cereals, cerelac, and some vegetables (5 meals a day ). Also to mention that he does not like mother's milk, every time he refuses that within a minute or two. Please suggest.

Don't compare his wt with 5 month's wt. Now his expected wt should be about 9 kg. 8 kg is slightly at lower side. As the child grows, his wt doesn't increase with the same pace as at younger age. I am not seeing any place of milk or its product in his 5 meals. Give him ideally 2 meals but not more than 3 meals in a day consisting of varieties like ghee added haluwa, rice/ sujee kheer, khichadi, dal-roti very small pieces, vegetables well cooked in ghee/ oil, fruits etc of his taste and to develop taste. 3-4 times sweetened milk and rest breast milk 3-4 times. Probably he may be refusing mother's milk because she may be trying to feed her own milk most of time. If it is so I hope with above regime he shall like mother's feed and start gaining wt.

For newborns its normal that the do not pass stools for 3-4 days. Or they may pass stools upto 8-10 times a day anything beyond that needs to be examined and investigated. For sneezing give him flucold drops 0.5ml three times a day.
