Bow Legs:What You Need To Know

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Kolkata
Bow Legs:What You Need To Know

Often children are born with bowing of legs, due to folded leg position in utero.

Once they start putting pressure on them while walking, they may straighten out. This happens generally by 2 to 3 years of age.

If not corrected then they may cause some serious problems:
*shortening of 1 leg
*deformity
*difficulty walking running
*higher risk of arthritis.

Persistent bowing may be due some deficiency:
*rickets
*Blount's disease
*lead or fluoride poisoning
*others

First few tests:
25 (oh) vitamin d3 level in serum
Serum free calcium level
X-ray of legs.

How will your pediatrician monitor for a change?

Measurements of distance between knees while a child is lying on the back.

This is monitored to see for any worsening

What can be done?

*treat rickets.
*any other underlying problem to be ruled out.
*braces orthopedic devices to keep the leg in straightened position (serious cases)
*surgery after 3 years (determined according to individual case basis)

All problems may not be solved but timely intervention can change the life of a child forever.

Observe him or some more time, if there are complaints from school or anything significant is observed you can take him for iq test to a psychologist/psychiatrist other necessary tests can be done then. Just relax as parents, he is just growing support him motivate him.

Ideal milk for babies is breastmilk especially for babies with milk protein allergy. Sometimes even soya milk also can cause allergy. If absolutely can't give breastmilk & tolerating soya milk you can continue with the same.

My new born baby girl has 2mm pda. What is the treatment for this? She is now 4months age.

DMB
Pediatrician, Chennai
Ductus closure is clearly indicated for any child or adult who is symptomatic from significant left-to-right shunting through the PDA. In asymptomatic patients with significant left-to-right shunting that results in left heart enlargement, closure is indicated to minimize the risk of complications in the future. The size of PDA is not relevant but its impact on the left ventricle is. Your child needs regular follow up and trans catheter occlusion if her heart function is compromised. In case you are getting any invasive procedures like scopies, catheterisation or dental extraction, she will need antibiotics before procedure to prevent a serious infection called bacterial endocarditis.
