5 Proven ways to keep your child away from junk food

In India, 2% of urban children are obese, 8-10% are overweight and the number of children likely to be obese is on the rise. Junk food seems to be the major cause behind this recent trend.

Low in nutrient but high on calories, junk food has been found to adversely affect not only energy levels but also brain function. With junk food being easily available, it could be tough to keep your child away from it while nudging him on to eat healthily. However, there are ways in which you can keep your child away from junk food, and consequently lifestyle diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular problems etc. Read on...

1. Always keep healthy snacks easily accessible
Children have a tendency to have foods that are visible and easy to reach. So, if you have packaged foods that your child can get his hands on very easily, it’s time to remove them. From vegetables, fruits to wholegrain crackers, such healthy snack options should be within the reach of your child. Place them in easy to reach food cabinets or on the lower shelves of the fridge, so that whenever your child feels hungry, he can go straight for them rather than opting for unhealthy food options.

2. Say no to junk food when at home
You have the power to create a home environment where you can control what can be eaten and what goes into your pantry. The home should be a place where healthy food should be in and junk food should be out. This way, you get to control the amount of junk food your child has as well as present healthier alternatives to him.

3. Don’t reward your child with junk food
It is very common for parents to reward their children with junk food. This shouldn’t be done as it only makes junk food an even more appealing option for children. Instead opt for non-food rewards such as extra pocket money, or a new toy etc.
Moreover, you shouldn’t use junk food as a bargaining chip either, i.e. by telling him he can have an ice cream if he eats his vegetables first. This would do more harm than good as your child would find processed foods more appealing and healthy food alternatives less appealing.

4. Lead by example
In order for your child to eat healthily, you need to lead by example. Limit your own consumption of junk food first. If you want to take your child away from junk food, you need to be a role-model yourself. Furthermore, it is good to include your child on your plans for healthy eating as it allows them to have a say in what they would and wouldn’t like to eat instead of foodstuffs being imposed on them. Make a meal plan together to figure out healthier eating alternatives for your child.

5. Teach moderation to your child
Don’t completely ban junk food as this move can backfire. This is because, by doing so, the moment your child gets the opportunity to have junk food items, he will most likely overindulge. On the other hand, teach him about moderation and the importance of having small quantities of this type of food from time to time.
Teaching your child to eat healthily is not an easy task, but is also not impossible to achieve. With a little bit of guidance and perseverance, you can easily achieve the goal of keeping your child away from junk foods.

Can any doc prescribed me what all foods should I feed to my baby of 8 1/2 mnth as she is not on breast feeding she is on buffalo milk diluted wit some amount of water & please tell me what &which time should I feed her as she is too hungry now n then & she faces digestion problem when needed wit egg jaldi, khichdi, dal water, cerelac. Dear mother Try to change the schedule the baby's sleep routine by taking him out in the open and play so that he does not sleep in the evening .otherwise also slowly his sleep hours are going to be lesser in coming months.so donot worry .its normal Happy Mother hood

What is the good food for 2 years old baby.
2 year old baby can have all food which a normal adult eats, like home made roti/ chapatti, sabzi, daal rice, khichadi. You can make it more healthy by adding ghee, use sweeteners like honey/ jaggery/ dates rather than sugar in majority cases. They can have lapsi, sheera, upama, appam, poha, pancakes, dosas made up of mixed daals soaked overnight with added vegetables, eggs, malpohas, uttappas. If they dont like vegetables add it in daal/ khichadi/ dosas/ pancakes/ soups. Give milk once in a day at least, if not plain add bournvita/ horlicks according to their taste. Curd/ paneer is good for them if they dont have any allergy to milk products.

Hello My 4 month old baby boy is breastfeed and bottle fed too. He is putting on good weight. Bt he passes green color stool. Do I need to worry?

We always advise against bottle feeding as it is inherent with many problems. Only breast feed & homemade semi solids are the ideal food for a 4 month old baby. If you stop bottle the stool should become normal. I can give you constant support and advice if you give all details like birth weight and immunisation details, better to ask privately.

you can wait for eruption of tooth till 1 1/2 years of age. till that age give semisolid food for diet. you can give all food of regular diet in mashed form / semisolid form. takehelp of mixer for the same. keep good variety of food to the child. add fruits also to the diet. important is semi solid form so that the baby can swallow it easily. some of the foods that can begiven are khichdi dal daliya rab sheera khir fruits seasonal milk products etc

It could have been better if baby's gestation age mentioned. From wt gestational age appears 31 weeks, short of 9 weeks. Thus consider age of baby as 5 months. For this age wt is not poor. However Gradually increase feeding.

If stool is watery and fairly in large quantity, maintain her hydration and electrolytes by giving ORS so long she likes and in between plain water. Continue feeding. Get in touch with pediatrician. Medicine to be given depends on cause of Loose motion.

Yes kitmox eye drops can be used, one drop four times daily. However, if you do not see any improvement in one or two days, better to go for a proper consultation with an ophthalmologist.

Calcimax p will not help for weight gain. It only helps f proper bone growth and dentition. Weight gain occurs only because of breastfeeding.

To avoid child hood obesity:-
1. Limit your child's consumption of sugar sweetened beverages
2. Encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables
3. Eat meals together as a family as often as possible
4. Limit eating out especially at fast food restaurants
5. Adjust portion sizes appropriately as per their age
6. Limit TV and computer time to less than two hours.
